“Why Hasn’t Someone Thought of That Before?” How Star Wars: Galactic Racer Rethinks Racing-Game Progression

Star Wars: Galactic Racer uses a runs-based campaign, branching routes and event choices to move beyond collection-first progression—but whether it solves a genre-wide problem remains open.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is built around a runs-based campaign instead of making a growing car collection the main measure of progress. Players choose events, routes, vehicles and upgrades during a tour; too many crashes can end that run, while some perks and unlocks carry forward. Fuse Games presents that structure as a way to make each decision count. Whether it solves one of racing games’ biggest problems is a developer’s thesis, not a proven genre-wide verdict.

What problem does Star Wars: Galactic Racer aim to solve?

Fuse Games’ critique is that many racing games lean heavily on a familiar progression loop: win races, add cars to a collection and keep advancing. Co-founder Matt Webster told Top Gear that the team wanted to push beyond that model. The studio’s proposed alternative is a campaign organized around runs, where event choices, upgrades and the possibility of losing a tour give races consequences beyond adding another vehicle to a garage.

That is a design goal, not an established diagnosis of the whole genre. The available sources do not show how common player dissatisfaction with car-collection progression is, or independently demonstrate that Galactic Racer has fixed it. The more precise claim is that Fuse Games is trying to make replayability and decisions central to its own racing campaign.

How does the runs-based campaign work?

The official game description says players choose events as they progress through a tour. Too many crashes end the tour; players regroup and begin again, with some perks and unlocks carrying over between attempts. The result is a structure with both run-level stakes and longer-term progression, rather than a simple uninterrupted ladder of races.

In an interview with Top Gear, Webster described a championship sequence generated with random elements, potentially combining time trials, elimination races, rewards and run-ending failure states. That is interview detail, not a complete official rulebook: the sources do not specify every condition that can end a run or precisely which rewards persist.

Why the decisions matter

A run-based format gives the team several levers to connect one event to the next. A player can weigh the potential reward of an event against the risk of damage or failure, choose a route where branching paths are available, and decide how to spend resources on a craft or its upgrades. The official feature listing also highlights customizable builds, abilities and takedowns. These systems are intended to make a tour feel like a sequence of choices rather than just a sequence of finish lines.

Creative director Kieran Crimmins told TechRadar: “We want every decision to matter, every upgrade to matter, every vehicle to matter, every race to matter, and like the runs-based structure allows us to do that, like we’ve never done in an arcade racing before.” The final phrase is the studio’s claim about novelty; it should not be mistaken for an independently verified comparison with every earlier arcade racer.

Is it just random races?

No. Randomly generated championship sequences are one reported part of the structure, but the game’s official feature description also emphasizes branching routes, different environments and risk-reward decisions. Randomness can change the sequence or opportunity a player encounters; route selection and event choice are decisions the player makes within that structure.

The official site names three modes: Campaign, Scenario and Arcade. Its description of the campaign is the one that explains the runs-based tour. The available material does not provide enough detail to treat the other modes as extensions of that campaign loop or to specify all their rules.

What makes the vehicles handle differently?

Galactic Racer uses several classes of repulsorcraft rather than presenting every ride as a car with a different appearance. The official feature listing says classes have distinct handling and tactical advantages. Fuse Games’ game-feel interview explains one choice behind that approach: the team initially prototyped the craft with conventional traction, then removed it because hover vehicles do not get grip from the ground in the same way wheeled vehicles do. The developers say that opened up more terrain and gradients and supported higher speed; those are explanations of design intent, not independent handling measurements.

The studio also uses familiar vehicle analogies to make different craft legible: landspeeders are broadly car-like, speeder bikes bike-like, and skim speeders plane-like. Podracers combine, in the team’s description, a horse-and-chariot idea with Formula 1. Those analogies suggest what sort of feel the designers are pursuing, but they are not a substitute for playing each class.

Does this mean Galactic Racer has solved racing games’ biggest problem?

It offers a concrete alternative to collection-first progression: runs, event choices, branching routes and failure stakes, with some progression surviving a reset. That is a meaningful design proposition. But “one of driving games’ biggest problems” remains a provocative framing from the title, not a measured industry consensus. The sources describe the developers’ rationale and the game’s intended systems; they do not provide player research or comparative evidence showing the model is broadly better.

The key question for players is whether the trade-off suits them. A player who enjoys adapting to changing events and accepting the possibility of a failed tour may find the format compelling. Someone who prefers a stable, steadily expanding garage may not view runs and resets as an improvement. The published descriptions establish the design, not how every player will respond to it.
