How to Tell Whether a Game Uses True HDR or an SDR-to-HDR Conversion

An HDR icon or an HDR mode on your television does not prove that a game rendered native HDR. To determine what is happening, disable Windows and driver conversion features, check the game’s own HDR controls, inspect the active color-space signal, and compare carefully controlled scenes. Native HDR is authored in the game’s rendering pipeline; SDR-to-HDR conversion is added later by Windows, a GPU driver, or sometimes the display.

What “true” or native HDR means

Native HDR means the game creates high-dynamic-range scene data before the final display signal is encoded. In Microsoft’s Xbox HDR10 sample, a scene is rendered into an FP16 backbuffer with values above 1.0. An HDR shader then converts Rec.709 primaries to Rec.2020 and applies the ST.2084 perceptual-quantizer (PQ) curve for 10-bit output. Bright objects can therefore retain authored relationships instead of being reconstructed from an already-compressed SDR image.

The game’s tone-mapping and user calibration controls are part of that pipeline. A native implementation may expose paper-white, peak-brightness, black-level, or HDR calibration controls because it knows how its scene-referred values should map to a display. Those controls are useful evidence, but a menu alone is not proof: a title can expose an HDR-looking menu while another layer performs the conversion.

The corresponding SDR path

In the same Microsoft sample, the SDR path tone-maps or clips the scene to an 8-bit Rec.709 image. Once that image has been reduced to SDR, a later converter can widen its apparent range, but it cannot recover highlight relationships that the original SDR tone map discarded. This distinction is the foundation of every practical test: identify where the HDR information was created.

What SDR-to-HDR conversion does

Windows Auto HDR is an operating-system conversion layer for many older SDR-only games. Microsoft describes it as automatically increasing color range and brightness to HDR on an HDR-capable display. A GPU driver can offer a similar feature under labels such as SDR-to-HDR, game HDR enhancement, or “AI HDR.” A television or monitor can also apply its own picture-mode processing after receiving the signal.

Conversion can produce a legitimate HDR10 signal even though the game rendered SDR. Consequently, “the display says HDR” answers only what mode or signal the display received; it does not identify who authored the brightness and color values.

Typical ownership of each step

Pipeline stage Native HDR SDR-to-HDR conversion
Scene rendering Game renders HDR-capable values, often in floating point. Game renders an SDR image, commonly limited to an SDR tone-mapped range.
Color encoding Game targets HDR10-style Rec.2020 primaries and ST.2084/PQ transfer. Windows or a driver transforms Rec.709/sRGB content into an HDR output.
Tone-mapping owner Usually the game, with display adaptation and user calibration. Operating system, GPU driver, and/or display; the game may have no control.
Highlight behavior Authored scene-referred highlights can remain distinct from reference white. The converter remaps the entire SDR range; highlights may look lifted, compressed, or uniformly bright.
What an HDR badge proves Only that an HDR mode or signal was detected, not that the game authored it.

Step 1: isolate the game from conversion layers

Start with a clean baseline. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select the HDR display, and turn Auto HDR off. Disable every GPU-driver option that advertises SDR-to-HDR conversion, automatic HDR enhancement, or AI HDR. If the driver has per-game profiles, check those as well as its global setting. Keep the display itself in a neutral HDR picture mode while testing; a vivid or dynamic mode can alter the result after the signal arrives.

Restart the game after changing these settings. Some games choose their swap-chain format only at launch, so toggling a Windows or driver option while the process is running can leave the old path active. Record the display’s current HDR state, refresh rate, resolution, and picture preset so that later comparisons use identical conditions.

Why this step matters

If Auto HDR or a driver converter remains enabled, an SDR game can look convincingly HDR and can trigger the display’s HDR indicator. You would then be testing the converter rather than the game. Conversely, turning conversion off may make an SDR title appear flat or dim; that is useful evidence, not a failure of the test.

Step 2: inspect the game’s own HDR implementation

Look in the game’s video, graphics, or display menu for an HDR toggle and calibration screen. Note whether it offers controls for paper white, peak brightness, maximum luminance, black level, or an HDR test pattern. A calibration screen that asks you to place a logo at a specified brightness is stronger evidence than a simple “HDR on” switch because it indicates the game is mapping its own reference values.

Do not treat these controls as conclusive. Some games expose HDR options that merely request an HDR swap chain while leaving tone mapping to another layer; others retain an HDR menu even when Windows is doing the conversion. Test the output signal in the next step and then compare scenes with conversion disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the game’s state

  • Write down whether HDR is enabled in the game and whether the game requires a restart.
  • Capture the values shown for paper white and peak brightness; do not assume those numbers describe your panel’s measured capability.
  • Check whether the game offers separate SDR and HDR calibration screens. A true HDR path often changes the reference instructions, but this remains supporting evidence.

Step 3: verify the active signal and color space

When your monitor, receiver, GPU control panel, or diagnostic overlay exposes the active color space, look for HDR10/BT.2100-style signaling: Rec.2020 primaries with an ST.2084/PQ transfer function, normally at 10-bit output. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance identifies DXGI_COLOR_SPACE_RGB_FULL_G2084_NONE_P2020 as the HDR color-space value for an HDR display.

SDR is associated with Rec.709 or sRGB-style signaling, usually with an SDR transfer curve. If the game is running with Auto HDR and the operating system converts it, you may still see the HDR10 color space at the display because the conversion layer changes the final signal. Therefore, color-space inspection confirms the encoding, not authorship. Combine it with the isolation and scene tests.

Observed signal What it establishes What it does not establish
Rec.2020 + ST.2084/PQ, 10-bit The display is receiving an HDR10-style signal. Whether the game, Windows, driver, or display created the HDR values.
Rec.709/sRGB SDR The active output is SDR. Whether an HDR-capable mode exists but is disabled elsewhere.
HDR badge with unknown color space The display entered an HDR-related mode. That native game HDR is active.

Step 4: compare controlled scenes

Use the same display, viewing mode, resolution, refresh rate, and game settings for every comparison. First run the game with Auto HDR and driver conversion disabled. Then, without changing the display, enable one conversion layer at a time. Photographing the screen is unreliable because cameras apply their own exposure and tone mapping; rely on the display’s signal information and repeatable visual references instead.

Choose scenes that reveal the mapping

  • Small bright highlights: sunlight glints, neon signs, muzzle flashes, or a bright lamp against a dark background. Native HDR may keep the highlight intense without lifting the entire scene.
  • Near-black detail: dark interiors and shadowed faces. A converter may raise the whole SDR image, changing black levels and making shadows look gray.
  • UI and reference white: menus, subtitles, and HUD elements. In a native path, the game can place UI white consistently relative to its paper-white setting; a conversion layer may brighten UI along with the rest of the SDR frame.
  • Gradients: skies, fog, and smooth walls. Look for banding or clipped transitions, but remember that panel limitations and video processing can create the same artifacts.

These are tendencies inferred from the difference between a scene-referred HDR pipeline and an SDR image remapped after rendering, not universal visual fingerprints. Art direction, local tone mapping, blooming, and the display’s own processing can produce exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an A/B procedure

  1. Load a repeatable save point containing both dark areas and bright highlights.
  2. With all conversion layers off, note the game’s HDR calibration values and the appearance of UI white.
  3. Quit and relaunch after enabling only Windows Auto HDR. Do not change the television or monitor picture mode.
  4. Compare the same camera angle, highlight, shadow, and HUD element.
  5. Disable Auto HDR, enable only the driver’s HDR enhancement if available, and repeat.
  6. Return to the clean baseline. If the game’s HDR toggle changes the active signal or calibration behavior while no converter is active, confidence in native HDR increases.

Step 5: interpret metadata and the television’s HDR indicator carefully

HDR metadata is not a certificate of native rendering. Microsoft’s SetHDRMetaData documentation states that Windows does not guarantee that swap-chain metadata is sent to the monitor, and monitors do not handle HDR metadata consistently. The documentation also notes that metadata does not change the interpretation of the pixels themselves. A game, Windows, or a driver can therefore send an HDR mode with incomplete, ignored, or altered metadata.

Your television’s “HDR,” “HDR10,” or “Game HDR” banner confirms a mode or signal condition. It cannot tell whether the game rendered Rec.2020/PQ values or whether an SDR frame was converted immediately before output. Treat the banner as a useful cross-check after inspecting the signal, never as the deciding test.

Step 6: account for the display’s actual limits

The same HDR game can look different on two displays because HDR panels vary widely in peak luminance, black level, gamut, and tone-mapping behavior. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance recommends adapting tone mapping to measured display capabilities, including MaxCLL, minimum luminance, and color primaries. HGIG guidance likewise defines primary and extended HDR ranges and recommends retrieving display luminance values so important game objects retain gradation.

For scale, the Xbox GDK sample identifies 80 nits as the SDR paper-white reference. It gives approximately 120–150 nits for an SDR television, 200–300 nits for a PC monitor, and about 550 nits for a smartphone as example consumer reference levels. These are reference examples from Microsoft’s 2026 sample, not universal limits or guarantees for every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HGIG material uses 600, 1,000, 4,000, and 10,000 nits as category and tone-map range values. They describe HDR capability categories and mapping ranges, not a requirement that your display reach any one of those numbers. A panel that clips at 600 nits may show less highlight detail than one that can track a 1,000-nit target, even when both receive identical native HDR data.

Keep calibration consistent

  • Run the game’s HDR calibration after the display has warmed up and its HDR picture mode is selected.
  • Do not compare a game in a manufacturer’s dynamic tone-map mode with another test in a reference or HGIG mode.
  • Record any console or system-level HDR calibration. HGIG notes that a console calibration can override tone-mapping information supplied by a display manufacturer.
  • Optional colorimeters or luminance meters can measure the display; they are measurement aids, not prerequisites for determining whether the game or Windows owns the HDR pipeline.

Question If yes If no
Does the game provide HDR calibration and produce HDR10 signaling with all conversion layers disabled? Native HDR is likely; continue checking scene behavior and display limits. Look for an external converter or an SDR-only path.
Does the display receive Rec.2020/ST.2084 only when Auto HDR or a driver feature is enabled? The external layer is creating the HDR output. Signal encoding alone remains inconclusive.
Do highlights and UI change substantially when one converter is toggled, while the game settings stay fixed? That converter owns at least part of tone mapping. The game or display may be doing most of the mapping.
Does changing the television picture mode alter highlight clipping without changing the input signal? The display is applying its own tone map. Look upstream at the game, OS, or driver.

Common ambiguous cases and fixes

The game has an HDR menu but looks identical in SDR

Verify that Windows Auto HDR and driver conversion are off, relaunch the game, and inspect the active color space. Some titles require exclusive fullscreen or a restart before switching swap-chain formats. If the signal remains SDR, the menu may be inactive, misconfigured, or limited to a display mode that the current output path does not support.

The TV says HDR even with the game’s HDR option disabled

Check Auto HDR, driver enhancements, and the television’s own “HDR effect” picture mode. The first two can generate an HDR signal from SDR; the last can alter an SDR input without changing the game’s rendering path. Confirm the input color space rather than relying on the banner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Native HDR appears too dark or clips highlights

That does not by itself disprove native rendering. Recheck the game’s paper-white and peak-brightness values, the system HDR calibration, and the display’s luminance capability. A mismatch between an authored target and a panel’s tone map can remove highlight gradation. Restore the display’s reference or HGIG-oriented mode and recalibrate before judging the pipeline.

Two displays produce different results

Hold the game and signal constant, then compare each panel’s measured or specified luminance, gamut, black level, and tone-map mode. Display adaptation is expected; different appearance is not evidence that one signal was native and the other converted.

A concise confidence checklist

  • Auto HDR is off in Settings > System > Display for the selected HDR monitor.
  • GPU-driver SDR-to-HDR and AI HDR options are off, including per-game overrides.
  • The game’s HDR mode and calibration controls have been recorded and applied after a relaunch.
  • The active signal reports HDR10-style Rec.2020 primaries and ST.2084/PQ when HDR is enabled.
  • Controlled scenes show authored highlight, shadow, and UI behavior rather than a uniform lift of the SDR image.
  • Television or monitor HDR badges are treated as confirmation of mode, not proof of authorship.
  • Display luminance, gamut, tone-map mode, and system calibration are held constant during comparisons.

If all of these conditions are met, you can reasonably attribute HDR rendering to the game. If HDR appears only after Auto HDR or a driver feature is enabled, the output is SDR-to-HDR conversion. If the signal is HDR but scene behavior changes with the display’s picture mode, the display owns at least part of the final tone mapping. In mixed pipelines, more than one layer can contribute; the test identifies each layer’s role instead of forcing a binary label.
