To find out how a specific game handles NPC dialogue, look for title-specific evidence in its credits, official disclosures, developer statements, and documentation for its dialogue systems. A line that sounds unusually flat, repetitive, or oddly timed may be worth investigating, but those traits do not prove it was made with AI.
It also helps to ask three separate questions: who wrote the words, who supplied or licensed the voice, and whether the particular line was recorded in advance or generated during play. A game can combine human performances and AI tools.
What “AI dialogue” can mean
The phrase can describe different parts of production. A game might use AI to generate the words, synthesize speech from written dialogue, or create new speech using a digital replica of an actor’s voice. Those are distinct from an actor recording scripted lines, though a single game—or a single character—may use more than one approach.
- Human-recorded dialogue: An actor performs lines that are recorded and used in the game.
- Synthesized voice: Software turns written dialogue into speech. The words may still have been written in advance by a person.
- Generated dialogue: A system produces or adapts dialogue in response to a player, potentially in real time.
- Digital replica: A voice model generates speech resembling a performer’s voice. The performer may have recorded source material or granted a license, but that does not mean every resulting line was individually performed.
So “Is this voice AI?” and “Was this response generated in real time?” are not the same question.

How to check a specific game
- Start with official, game-specific sources. Check the end credits, the game’s official FAQ or AI disclosure page, developer or publisher statements, patch notes, and documentation for any dialogue feature. Save the exact wording and date, since disclosures can concern a particular update or system rather than the whole game.
- Read credits as evidence of credited work, not a complete production log. A voice actor listed in the credits establishes that the actor has a credited role. It does not by itself show that every line was individually recorded by that actor, or rule out a licensed digital replica for additional lines.
- Match the evidence to the version you play. A prototype, mod, platform feature, or announcement about another project does not establish how the retail game handles dialogue. Note the game version, platform, region, and update when a statement specifies them.
- Use listening as a prompt to investigate, not as a verdict. Repetition, unusual timing, pronunciation, or mismatched emotion can have many causes. Human performances and post-production can sound unusual, while generated speech can be polished.
- Separate confirmed facts from allegations. If a report describes a union filing or a dispute, attribute it as an allegation unless a verified outcome establishes more.
What public documentation can—and can’t—tell you
A documented example: UEFN Conversations
Epic’s announcement for its UEFN Conversations feature describes NPCs capable of unscripted, voiced interaction and real-time adaptation. Epic says the system uses Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite to process audio inputs and generate text responses, then ElevenLabs to turn those responses into voiced output. The announcement called the feature experimental and said creators would be able to publish islands using Conversations after a Beta release. That is a documented example of a generative workflow, not evidence that an unrelated game uses the same tools. What performer agreements disclose
SAG-AFTRA’s page for its 2025 Interactive Media Agreement describes consent and disclosure requirements for AI digital-replica use. Its FAQ says an employer’s description of intended use may need to identify the character, context, dialogue, or gameplay, and that required project information includes whether a character will be used to create real-time generated dialogue. These are performer-facing contract provisions for covered performers and employers—not proof that every game must display a public AI label in its credits, or a way for players to identify how a particular line was made. SAG-AFTRA’s broader AI guidance discusses provisions across multiple agreements and sectors. For example, it says synthetic voices generated with AI require notice to the union under the TV Animation agreement it describes. Contract terms vary, so provisions for one agreement should not be assumed to apply to all video games. SAG-AFTRA’s AI guidance explains the broader context.
How to describe a reported dispute
In a May 19, 2025 report, the Associated Press said SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge alleging AI-generated Darth Vader voice use in Fortnite replaced bargaining-unit work without notice. AP also reported that Epic had not immediately responded to its request for comment. That is a reported union allegation, not a court finding or a general rule about how games produce dialogue. How to compare dialogue systems
When comparing two games or features, check the same points for each rather than relying on how their voices sound:
- Is dialogue authored in advance, generated during play, or a mix?
- Is the voice an actor’s recording, synthesized speech, or a digital replica?
- Has the developer publicly documented the workflow?
- Is the system experimental, released, or limited to a mod or platform feature?
- Which game version, platform, and region does the evidence cover?
If official sources do not answer one of these questions, treat that part of the production process as unconfirmed. There is no reliable conclusion to draw from the audio alone.
