Find the earliest upload, check what the developer or publisher has confirmed, and compare specific details across versions and official material. Visual clues can guide that work, but a HUD, apparent glitch, or realistic camera move cannot prove a video is authentic. A clip may also be genuine but edited, miscaptioned, or captured from an unfinished build.
What can—and cannot—prove a leaked game video is real?
Appearance alone is not a reliable test. Genuine development footage may contain bugs or unfinished assets, while CGI can imitate familiar gameplay conventions, including interface graphics and game-like camera movement. A circulating clip may be authentic but edited, or real footage presented with a false date, game, or context.
The official guidance reviewed here does not establish a single visual test that reliably separates every authentic game capture from CGI. Treat each clue as a lead, and seek corroboration from the source, the publisher, or independent investigators.
How to verify a suspicious clip

Write down the exact claim and trace the upload
Note which game the video supposedly shows, what build or date is claimed, and what the uploader says it proves. Follow reposts back to the earliest version you can find. Check the uploader’s connection to the game and look for confirmation on official developer or publisher channels. A repost, confident caption, or visual resemblance is not authentication.

Bellingcat describes searching screenshots and video thumbnails to locate earlier appearances and comparing upload dates; it also documents cases in which a clip’s apparent context was wrong: Bellingcat’s video verification guide.

Inspect the whole clip and compare distinctive details
Look for recognizable characters, locations, interface elements, lighting, animations, and repeated object details. Check whether camera movement and interactions remain consistent across multiple moments, whether objects keep their shape and position, and whether apparent controls produce coherent game-like responses. Compare particular frames with official releases or earlier copies rather than relying on a general resemblance to a game’s style.
HUD elements, particle behavior, shadows, equipment, resolution, darkness, shakiness, and sound can all suggest questions to investigate. They do not settle the video’s origin. Bohemia Interactive, for example, lists HUDs, unnatural particles, unrealistic vehicles or uniforms, low resolution, darkness, shakiness, and missing or artificial-feeling sound as possible cues in Arma 3 footage misrepresented as real-world combat. An apparent glitch is ambiguous: development footage can be buggy, and CGI can deliberately add game-like motion or interface graphics.

Search for earlier appearances
Capture frames with readable text, unusual objects, or recognizable scenery. Reverse-search those images and available video thumbnails, then inspect any matches rather than assuming they settle the question. Cropping, mirroring, overlays, or color changes may make a match harder to find. A failed reverse search does not prove a clip is original. Bellingcat outlines this approach and its limits in its video verification guide.

Check platform disclosures and metadata cautiously
On YouTube, expand the description and look for the “How this content was made” section. YouTube says labels may identify meaningful synthetic or altered content, and that certain valid C2PA Content Credentials disclosures can carry forward. The label’s absence does not prove that a clip is genuine gameplay: YouTube’s altered or synthetic content disclosure guidance.

Metadata may add context, but reposting and transcoding can strip or change it. A filename, codec, upload timestamp, or missing metadata does not by itself establish when a clip was recorded or which build it came from.

Separate confirmation of a leak from authentication of this copy
A publisher may confirm that a leak occurred without confirming that a particular circulating video is authentic and unaltered. State exactly what the official source identifies. If a publisher-side forensic watermark is involved, remember that it is not necessarily a public viewer tool: Irdeto describes Denuvo as using invisible, user-unique fingerprints and a detection portal, a vendor-described service for publishers: Irdeto’s Denuvo Anti-Tamper page.

How to describe the result without overstating it
- Confirmed: An official source identifies this clip or its source.
- Likely: Multiple independent clues support the attribution, but direct confirmation is absent.
- Unverified: The available evidence does not establish where the clip came from.
- Misleading or altered: Evidence contradicts a specific caption, edit, or claimed context. Explain what is contradicted instead of calling the entire clip fake without support.
When comparing versions, consider upload chronology, continuity and edits, game-specific details, provenance disclosures, and corroboration from the developer, publisher, or a credible independent investigator. No one axis supplies a universal yes-or-no verdict.

Handle leaked footage with care
Policies differ by publisher. Rockstar’s policy page, last updated January 10, 2025, says it will take down footage from leaked pre-release copies of its games regardless of how the copy was obtained. That is Rockstar’s stated policy, not a rule that applies to every publisher: Rockstar Games Intellectual Property Policy.
Bohemia Interactive has also described reporting misrepresented Arma 3 videos to platforms. Its PR Manager Pavel Křižka said the effort was “very ineffective” in an October 10, 2023 article about footage falsely presented as real-world conflict: Bohemia Interactive’s article on Arma 3 campaigns in social media. This illustrates why a video’s continued availability—or removal—should not be treated as a definitive authenticity test.
