Close any page reached through an unsolicited message, advertisement, QR code or pop-up, then type playstation.com yourself or open a bookmark or the official PlayStation app. A copied Sony-style design, a padlock or HTTPS certificate does not prove that Sony operates the site.
Fake stores are built to collect PSN passwords, email credentials, payment-card details, backup codes or other personal information. Use the checks below before signing in or paying, and follow the recovery steps immediately if you already entered information.

Start with the domain, not the design
The strongest first test is ownership of the web address. The official US Store is on store.playstation.com. A page that looks identical but uses another domain is not the PlayStation Store, even if it displays the PlayStation name, familiar colors, game artwork or a convincing sign-in box.
Read the complete address
Look at the browser’s full address bar, not just the words shown in a search result or a shortened link. Check the registrable domain (the part immediately before the country or top-level ending), spelling and punctuation. Warning signs include:

- Misspellings such as a missing or added letter in “playstation.”
- Extra words, numbers or hyphens that make a different organization look official.
- A misleading subdomain, where “playstation” appears to the left of an unrelated owner-controlled domain, such as
playstation.example-downloads.tld. - A country or top-level domain that does not match the official page you intended to open.
- A long chain of redirects that ends somewhere other than the independently opened PlayStation domain.
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and the site; it does not tell you who controls the site. Scam operators can obtain certificates for their own domains. The domain owner is the meaningful identity check.
Do not confuse a link label with the destination
On a phone, press and hold a link to preview its destination before opening it. On a computer, hover over it and read the status-bar address. A message can show “PlayStation Store” while sending you to an unrelated domain. Do not rely on a familiar logo, a blue sign-in button or a padlock.
How you arrived there is evidence
Safe navigation is independent navigation. Close a suspicious tab and enter playstation.com yourself, use the official PlayStation app, or select a bookmark you created earlier. Search results and advertisements can be manipulated, so do not let a sponsored result or a high-ranking page decide where you sign in.
High-risk entry points
- Unsolicited direct messages, emails or text messages promising a reward or warning about your account.
- Pop-ups claiming that a download, payment or account verification is urgent.
- QR codes posted by unknown accounts, sent by another person or displayed in an unexpected context.
- Advertisements for free game codes, free virtual currency, exclusive beta access or tournament prizes.
PlayStation advises scanning QR codes only when they come from an official PlayStation channel or another source you trust. A QR code is simply a concealed link; the camera cannot tell whether the destination is genuine.

Offers and messages that should stop the transaction
Scammers use urgency and unusually generous offers to make a reader skip verification. Treat the following themes as a reason to stop, close the page and navigate independently:
- “Free” PS5 games, wallet funds, add-ons or virtual currency in exchange for a survey or sign-in.
- A claim that your account was reported, suspended or compromised unless you act immediately.
- A tournament, giveaway or beta invitation that you did not request.
- An urgent checkout, refund or payment-failure notice that demands a login through the supplied link.
- A countdown timer, limited quantity or threat that your account will be deleted if you leave.
An offer can be fraudulent even when the page contains accurate game titles and current artwork. PlayStation’s scam-awareness guidance says offers that seem too good to be true deserve caution; the value of the offer is not proof of its source.
What a legitimate download flow should and should not ask for
Credentials
Never enter a PSN password on a suspicious page. Do not provide the password for your email account, two-factor authentication or backup codes either. A third-party “unlock,” “age check,” “human verification” or “download manager” is not a legitimate reason to collect those secrets.

Free-currency pages are particularly risky because they can gather personal information and then use it to access accounts. If a page asks for more information than is necessary for an ordinary Store purchase, stop and verify through a separately opened PlayStation page.
Payment information
Do not type a card number, security code, billing address or one-time bank code into a page reached through a suspicious offer. If a page says a charge is pending or a refund is available, open your bank or card app directly and check there. Never call a phone number or use a refund link supplied by the page making the claim.
Downloads and files
A web page cannot turn an unauthorized download into an official PS5 license. Be wary of executable files, browser extensions, “activation tools” or requests to disable security software. The official way to obtain a digital PS5 game is through the Store on the console, the official PlayStation app or the independently opened Store website, followed by the normal account and payment process.

Compare the signals before you sign in

A polished interface is weak evidence. Control of the official domain and safe, independent navigation are much stronger evidence.
A safe verification procedure
- Pause. Do not enter credentials, payment details or codes while the link is under suspicion. Do not download a file or install an extension.
- Expose the full URL. Expand the address bar if necessary and inspect spelling, the registrable domain, subdomains, path and redirects. HTTPS or a padlock is not enough.
- Close the page. Do not continue investigating by clicking its “support,” “refund” or “verify” buttons.
- Navigate independently. Type
playstation.comor use a saved bookmark or the official PlayStation app. For the US Store, the official domain is store.playstation.com. - Check the account directly. If a message claims there is a suspension, purchase or security problem, inspect account notices and transaction history from the independently opened PlayStation environment.
- Check your financial account separately. Open your bank or card app using its normal icon or a known bookmark. Do not use contact details shown on the suspicious page.
- Decide before signing in. If the independently opened Store does not show the same action, offer or notice, treat the original page as fraudulent.
- Report it. Use PlayStation’s system-level reporting function for suspected scams encountered on PSN. You can also report phishing to the Federal Trade Commission and the Anti-Phishing Working Group through their independently verified channels.
If you entered information on a fake site
Act as though the information may have been copied. Speed matters, but use only contact points you reach independently.
You entered a PSN password or the account email was changed
- From a clean device, change the password for the email account associated with PSN first if you suspect that mailbox is exposed. The email account can otherwise be used to reset the PlayStation account again.
- Open
playstation.comyourself and follow the official compromised-account recovery process. If sign-in details were changed, use account recovery rather than links in the original message. - Change any other account that reused the same password. Use a unique password for every service.
- Review account security settings and sign out of all devices. Deactivate consoles when the recovery guidance indicates it is appropriate.
- Contact PlayStation Support through the independently opened official site and explain that credentials were entered on a suspected phishing page.
You entered card or payment details
- Contact the bank or card issuer using the number on the physical card or a statement you already trust.
- Ask whether the card should be frozen or replaced and monitor for unauthorized authorizations and charges.
- Remove saved payment methods from the PlayStation account when needed to prevent unwanted purchases, after you have secured access to the account.
- Check PlayStation transaction history directly and report transactions you do not recognize through official Support.
You entered a one-time code or backup code
Tell the account provider that an authentication code was exposed. Change the password, revoke active sessions and regenerate backup codes where the provider supports it. A code can be useful to an attacker even if the password itself was not entered.

You downloaded a file or opened an attachment
- Disconnect the affected device from the network if you suspect malware is actively running.
- Update its security software and run a full scan. The Federal Trade Commission recommends updating security software and scanning when a link or attachment may have installed malware.
- Remove unfamiliar applications, browser extensions and downloaded files only after preserving information needed by your security or support team.
- Change passwords from a different, clean device, beginning with email and then PSN and other accounts.
Account and transaction checks after exposure
Once access is restored, inspect recent sign-ins, devices, profile changes, messages and purchases. Look for a changed email address, new console or session, altered two-step verification settings, unfamiliar payment method, new order or wallet activity. Save dates, transaction identifiers, the suspicious domain and screenshots for Support, your bank and any report. Do not revisit the fake page to collect evidence; the URL in the message, browser history or a screenshot is sufficient.
PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance includes changing the email password when an unrecognized account email is involved, recovering the PlayStation account when sign-in details changed, reviewing transaction history, signing out of all devices, deactivating consoles when appropriate, removing payment methods to prevent unwanted purchases and contacting PlayStation Support.
Reporting helps remove the scam
If the suspicious link or message appeared inside PSN, use the system-level reporting function. PlayStation Safety & Moderation manager Luke Mears wrote on the PlayStation Blog on 11 May 2018: “Remember, the best way that you can help keep PSN safe is by using the system level reporting function so if you ever come across anything on PSN that you suspect is a scam you can report it to our Moderation team who will be happy to investigate.”
For email, text or web phishing, keep the original message and report it through the Federal Trade Commission’s phishing channel and the Anti-Phishing Working Group where applicable. Report unauthorized payments to the financial institution that issued the card. These reports are separate from account recovery; complete both.
Practical habits that prevent a repeat
- Keep a bookmark you created for the official Store rather than saving links from messages.
- Use a unique, long PSN password and a different password for the associated email account.
- Enable the strongest available multi-factor authentication and store backup codes securely, never in a message to another person.
- Install console, phone and computer updates and keep security software current.
- Read the domain on every sign-in page, especially after scanning a QR code.
- Assume that urgency is a tactic until the same notice appears after independent navigation.
- Never pay for a “verification,” “unlock” or “support” service offered by an unsolicited page.
The decision rule
If the address is not the independently verified PlayStation domain, do not sign in or pay. If the link arrived unexpectedly, treat it as untrusted even when the design is perfect. If the offer is free, urgent or unusually generous, close it and verify through the official app or a bookmark. If you already disclosed information, secure the email and PSN accounts, review transactions, remove payment methods when necessary, scan affected devices and contact official Support and your financial institution.
