Before clicking a Steam giveaway link, check where it leads and what it asks you to do. Stop if it opens an unfamiliar login page, pressures you to act, or asks for your password, Steam Guard code, payment, or gift-card code. Steam says its official login domains are www.steampowered.com, store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com; a page that looks like Steam is not proof that it is genuine.
Check the link before you log in
Look at the actual destination domain before entering credentials. Steam lists www.steampowered.com, store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com as official login domains. A lookalike page can copy Steam’s branding and wording, so judge the address—not the design. For help with an account, go directly to Steam’s Account Security Recommendations.

Do not follow a login link simply because a friend sent it. Steam warns that a friend’s account may be compromised and documents a phishing scheme in which users are asked to vote for a tournament team on a fake login site. See Steam’s “Vote for My Team” scam guidance.
Recognize pressure and impersonation
A giveaway that claims you must act immediately, threatens a ban, or invokes an authority figure deserves extra scrutiny. Steam says it does not use the Friends network to contact users for support. Anyone claiming to be Steam or Valve support in Steam Chat, Discord, or another chat should not be trusted with account access; Steam says its support is handled through help.steampowered.com.

Steam’s Scam FAQ says that a claim you were accidentally or falsely reported for fraud or another infraction is always the introduction to a scam. Treat that claim as a warning, not as a reason to follow instructions from the person contacting you.
Never provide passwords, codes, or payment to claim a prize
- Never give another person your Steam password or Steam Guard authentication code. Steam’s account-security guidance says, “NEVER give out your password to anyone.”
- Do not buy something or send a Steam gift-card code to “verify” account ownership. Steam identifies those demands as scam indicators in its guidance on false-report and ban scams.
- Do not install a file or browser extension just to claim a giveaway unless you can independently establish that it is legitimate. If you already downloaded something suspicious, treat the device as potentially at risk.
Know what a real Steam gift does—and does not—prove
Steam has an official process for purchasing and delivering gifts. But a message that mentions a Steam gift is not proof that an offer is legitimate, and Steam says a gift can be revoked if it is refunded because of fraud or a payment dispute. Review Steam’s Gifts FAQ for the official gifting process. Gift-card codes are not a legitimate way to verify your account or unlock a giveaway.

Consider the offer as a whole: the destination, who contacted you and where, any pressure or authority claims, and whether it demands credentials, codes, or payment. Appearance and social proof—such as positive comments or “+rep”—cannot establish that a giveaway is safe. Steam also documents scams involving offers to buy Steam items; see its guidance on item-buying offers.

- If you entered account details: Go to Steam Support directly and use its recovery process. Steam says recovery is possible even if a scammer changed account details.
- Secure your accounts: Change your Steam password, check authorized devices and sign out unfamiliar ones, and review the security of the email account associated with Steam and any other accounts that share credentials.
- If you downloaded a file or extension: Scan the system for malware and remove suspicious browser extensions.
- Report the contact: Report the Steam account through its profile when applicable, and use the reporting tools on the outside chat platform where the contact occurred.
