Updating a jailbroken PS5 installs newer system software and can make the jailbreak you use stop working. Whether that happens depends on the console’s exact firmware and the exploit’s compatibility; the update number alone does not prove that a particular jailbreak is patched or preserved.
What an update can change
A PS5 jailbreak depends on firmware-specific exploit compatibility. Updating changes the console’s system software, which may close an exploit path or make one of the jailbreak’s required components incompatible. A vulnerability affecting a firmware version does not, by itself, mean that a usable jailbreak supports that version: an exploit chain may require additional components, and one of those components may have been patched separately.
For example, the PS5Dev UMTX project describes a vulnerability affecting firmware 1.00 through 7.61, but its documentation also says the jailbreak requires additional components and that a WebKit vulnerability used in the chain was patched in 6.00. Its supported-version list is narrower than the vulnerability’s stated range. That project is one example, not a compatibility chart for every PS5 jailbreak. See the project’s documentation.
What Sony’s current release notes say
As of October 7, 2026, Sony’s US release-notes page lists PS5 system software version 26.06-14.10.00. Sony says it made “some security fixes to the system software” and improved system software performance and stability. The notes do not identify the vulnerabilities fixed or mention jailbreaking, so they do not establish whether this version patches a particular jailbreak. Check Sony’s PS5 system software release notes.

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Reports have connected the update’s timing with a reported jailbreak, but timing is not confirmation of Sony’s intent or of the exploit’s compatibility. Treat claims that the update definitely disables—or definitely leaves working—a specific jailbreak as unverified unless they are backed by current documentation for that exact exploit and firmware.
Update or stay on your current firmware?
There is no universal best choice. Updating follows Sony’s official software path and provides the changes Sony lists; it may also be needed for applications, content, or online features. Staying on current firmware may matter to someone who depends on a jailbreak, but only if that firmware is supported by the specific exploit they intend to use.

| Choice | Potential benefit | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Update | Access to Sony’s listed security, performance, and stability changes, plus software or online features that require newer system software. | The update may make a jailbreak incompatible. Sony’s release notes do not confirm the status of a particular exploit. |
| Stay on current firmware | May preserve compatibility if the exact jailbreak supports that firmware. | Compatibility is exploit-specific, and delaying an update can mean missing newer system software or features. |
Before deciding, check the exploit’s current documentation for both the console’s installed firmware and the firmware you would install. Do not infer compatibility from a vulnerability range, a headline, or the timing of an update. The available documentation does not establish staying offline, blocking Sony services, or using unofficial packages as safe or universally effective ways to preserve a jailbreak.
How to update using Sony’s documented methods
Sony documents an update through the console and a manual USB update. A USB drive is only needed for the manual route, not for a normal online update.

- Select the option to update the system software and follow the on-screen instructions.
Update from a USB drive
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, and make sure it has about 1.1 GB of free space.
- Create folders named
PS5and, inside it,UPDATE. - Download the update file using Sony’s instructions and save it in the
UPDATEfolder asPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Connect the drive to the PS5 and follow Sony’s on-screen instructions for the manual update.
Follow Sony’s official PS5 update instructions for the current procedure and download. Sony warns that installing update data from another source or by another method may cause problems.
Updating is different from reinstalling system software
Sony also documents reinstalling system software from USB as a separate procedure. Reinstallation deletes all console data, so do not select it when you only intend to perform a standard update. Consult Sony’s instructions before using the reinstall option, especially if the console is already having problems.

What Sony says about modified consoles
Sony warns that if update data is installed from another source, by another method, or on a console altered or modified in any way, “the console might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data.” Sony also says those actions can void the system warranty and affect access to warranty and repair services from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
