Start with the original image file: inspect it for Content Credentials (C2PA), then check for an invisible watermark with a verifier that supports the relevant generator. A visible logo, metadata record, or watermark can provide evidence, but no single check identifies every AI-generated image. If a verifier finds nothing, that means only that it found no supported signal in the file you checked.
What you are checking for
“Watermark” can mean three different things, and each needs a different check:
- Visible mark: a logo or label overlaid on the image. You can see it, but it can be cropped or edited out; it is not a signed record of origin. Google DeepMind explains the limits of visible marks.
- Provenance metadata: information embedded in a file about its source or editing history. Content Credentials use the C2PA standard to record such information. A credential can describe AI use when that information is recorded, but it is not a universal verdict that an image is AI-generated. See the C2PA specification and Google’s explanation of Content Credentials.
- Invisible watermark: a signal embedded in image pixels, such as Google’s SynthID. You cannot reliably identify it by looking at the image; you need a verifier that supports that signal.
Check the image in this order
1. Start with the original file
If possible, inspect the image as it was originally created or downloaded—not a screenshot, social-media preview, or recompressed repost. Keep an unchanged copy before using inspection tools. Uploading, downloading, editing, converting, or sharing an image can strip or alter metadata, so a repost may not preserve the evidence present in the original. OpenAI describes how provenance signals can be lost or degraded, and Google recommends checking metadata when the original file is available.
2. Look for an obvious visible mark
Check the image for a generator logo, label, or other overlay. Record what you see, but do not treat it as proof: a mark can be added, altered, or removed, and it does not establish who made the image or how it was created. Visible labels are also distinct from the signals checked by OpenAI’s provenance tools.

3. Inspect metadata and Content Credentials
Use an image metadata or content-authenticity viewer on the original file. If it shows Content Credentials or a C2PA manifest, check the issuer, the recorded creation or editing actions, and any validation or trust status the viewer provides. A credential is most useful as a record of what its issuer attests to; it does not prove that the image depicts a real event or that every part of it was made with AI.
Ordinary metadata—such as camera model, date, or editing software—can offer context, but it is not conclusive. It may be absent, changed, or removed, and its presence does not establish whether an image is authentic or AI-generated. Google’s guidance treats metadata as one clue among several.

Adobe documents C2PA metadata for its own Creative Studio generative-AI workflow and describes how to inspect the resulting history. Its description of a preserved provenance chain applies to the specific download and ad-serving workflow on that page, not to every editor or sharing service. See Adobe’s workflow documentation.
4. Use a verifier matched to the signal
- Google SynthID: Google says you can upload an image, video, or audio clip to Gemini and ask whether Google AI created or edited it. Gemini’s verification guidance covers SynthID for Google AI tools. A detected watermark means all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google’s AI models; it does not mean the entire image was generated from a prompt. Read Google’s current verification guidance.
- OpenAI signals: OpenAI Verify checks supported images or audio for OpenAI-associated provenance signals, such as supported SynthID or a trusted C2PA manifest. OpenAI says its tools are not designed to detect content from other AI models. OpenAI explains what its checks cover.
- SynthID Detector portal: Google describes a separate portal for checking media for SynthID and says it is being tested with journalists and media professionals. Do not assume it is generally available; access may be limited. Check Google DeepMind’s SynthID page for its status.
These tools check particular signals, not every possible AI generator. They are not interchangeable, and a result from one provider does not establish whether another provider’s watermark or metadata is present. Google’s Gemini Help page also documents a changeable limit of roughly ten image checks per rolling 24 hours; consult the page for the current limit before relying on it.

What each result can—and cannot—tell you
| Signal | Where to check | What a finding supports | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visible mark, logo, or label | View the image | A visible identifier appears on the copy you inspected. | It can be cropped or edited out and is not a signed origin record. Google DeepMind. |
| Ordinary metadata, such as EXIF or editing traces | Metadata viewer on the original file | The file contains recorded camera, date, or software details. | Details may be missing, altered, or lost; they do not prove authenticity or AI generation. Google; OpenAI. |
| C2PA Content Credentials | Compatible credential viewer or verifier | A credential can provide a signed history from an issuer, including origin, edits, or AI use when recorded. | Coverage depends on supported credentials and an intact, valid history; it is not a universal AI verdict. Google. |
| SynthID | A verifier that supports the relevant SynthID signal, such as Gemini for Google AI | The verifier detected a supported, pixel-level watermark. | Coverage is provider-specific, and transformations can sometimes make a watermark harder to detect. Google DeepMind; Google. |
How to interpret “not detected”
A negative result is not proof that an image is human-made. The relevant signal may never have been added, may not be supported by the verifier, or may have been removed with metadata or degraded by transformations. A verifier may also have limited product or file-type coverage. Google notes that another AI system may have created the image even when Gemini finds no SynthID; a very small edit or simple content may also make a mark difficult to detect. OpenAI similarly lists missing, unsupported, or degraded signals among reasons a check may find nothing. Google’s guidance; OpenAI’s guidance.
Describe a negative check narrowly: “This verifier did not find a supported signal in this file.” A positive result is narrow, too. It can indicate AI involvement in part of an image or an edit; by itself, it does not establish that every pixel was generated, that the depiction is accurate, or who created it. OpenAI says its verification result does not establish accuracy, editing status, legal ownership, or context. OpenAI’s explanation.
