Pause before replying or paying. Independently check the person’s name, job, location and photos; ask someone you trust to read the exchange; and never treat a clean reverse-image search as proof that the account is genuine.

The pattern that most strongly signals a romance scam
Romance scammers build trust before making a request. One warning sign alone can have an innocent explanation, but several appearing together should change your response from “How do I explain this?” to “How do I protect myself?” The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and FBI describe recurring combinations of pressure, unverifiable identities, avoidance and financial demands.

A single canceled date does not establish fraud. The concern is the repeated pattern plus pressure or a request for money, access or sensitive material.

How to check whether the identity is real
Search the person and the story independently
- Search the name, claimed employer, profession, city and other distinctive details in separate searches.
- Compare results with what the person told you. Different locations, job histories, ages, timelines or names are meaningful inconsistencies.
- Search profile photos with a reverse-image tool. A photo appearing under another name, on stock-photo pages or on several unrelated profiles is a strong warning sign.
- Ask a trusted friend or relative to review the account and conversation. Another person may notice pressure or contradictions that are easy to miss when you are emotionally involved.
Use searches to find mismatches, not to certify authenticity. A reverse-image search with no result may simply mean the image is not indexed, was recently posted or has been altered. It does not prove the account is genuine. Do not use a suspicious message’s link, phone number or email address as your only verification route; find an official site or app yourself.
Check behavior, not popularity
A convincing biography, high follower count, comments, professional-looking photographs or an Instagram badge can all be copied, purchased or obtained by a compromised account. None substitutes for consistent answers, pressure-free communication and an identity you can verify through sources independent of the account.
Requests that should end the transaction
Do not send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person. Never let an online-only romantic contact use your bank account, payment account or cryptocurrency wallet to receive or move funds. Do not share passwords, recovery codes, two-factor authentication codes, full financial details, identity documents or intimate images.

- Travel fares, visas, customs charges or an emergency preventing a promised visit.
- Medical bills, hospital treatment or a family crisis.
- Package, delivery, tax or “release” fees.
- Gift-card numbers, wire transfers or cryptocurrency payments.
- An investment opportunity, trading tip or request to open an account for them.
- A request to receive money and forward it elsewhere, which can make your account part of money laundering or another fraud.
- Threats to publish intimate images unless you pay or send more material.
The FTC’s official wording is direct: “Nobody legit will ever ask you to help—or insist that you invest— by sending cryptocurrency, giving the numbers on a gift card, or by wiring money. Anyone who does is a scammer.” Read the full guidance in “Romance scammers’ favorite lies exposed.”
Instagram messages that pretend to be support
Not every scam is romantic. Attackers also impersonate Instagram support and claim your account will be suspended, verified, monetized or investigated. Their goal is often your password or two-factor code. Meta says authentic direct account communications can be checked in Instagram’s Emails from Instagram settings tab. Menu names and locations can change, so open the Instagram app or type the official site address yourself rather than following the message’s link.

- Do not sign in through an unexpected link.
- Do not give anyone a password, backup code, login code or two-factor authentication code.
- Do not install software or share your screen because a message claims to offer support.
- Verify account notices inside Instagram’s own settings and notifications.
Meta’s security guidance is available in “Keeping Instagram Safe and Secure.” If a romantic contact sends a “support” message or asks you to forward a code, treat the account and the security message as separate risks and secure your account immediately.
A practical risk test before you reply
Use this five-part check. A “no” answer does not prove a scam, but several “no” answers should end financial or intimate contact.

Money, credential and intimate-image requests deserve the greatest weight. A person can pass several social checks and still be attempting fraud; do not “balance” a direct financial demand against attractive photos or affectionate messages.
What to do when the conversation feels suspicious
1. Stop and slow down
Do not reply to an ultimatum, click a link, send a payment, share an image or provide a code. Save the conversation before blocking if you may need it for a report. Tell a trusted person what is happening and let them see the complete exchange, including usernames and payment instructions.
2. Verify without helping the scammer
Run independent searches for the name, job and photos. Use contact information found through an official website, not information supplied by the suspicious account. Do not send a small “test” payment or a document to prove you are serious; scammers use partial compliance to escalate.

3. Report and block in Instagram
Instagram’s in-app controls allow reports from a profile, message or piece of content. Open the relevant content menu, choose the reporting option that best describes the conduct, submit the details and then block the account. Meta’s scam-prevention information is at Meta Safety Center: Scam Prevention. Reporting does not guarantee removal, so blocking and stopping contact remain important.

- Change your Instagram password through the official app or site, not through a message link. Use a unique password that you do not reuse elsewhere.
- Turn on two-factor authentication using Instagram’s current security settings.
- Review Login Activity and sign out unfamiliar devices or locations.
- Change the password on any other service that used the same credential and inspect its active sessions.
- Tell your contacts if the account may have been taken over so they do not trust messages sent from it.
Meta described login requests and login-activity controls in its 2021 guidance; interface labels can change, so follow the current in-app security menus.
If you already sent money or account information
Act immediately, but do not assume recovery is possible. Stop contact with the account and keep screenshots, usernames, profile URLs, payment receipts, wallet addresses, emails and dates.
- Call the bank, card issuer, payment app, gift-card issuer or wire service using a number you find independently. Ask whether the transaction can be canceled, recalled or flagged as fraud.
- If cryptocurrency was used, contact the exchange or wallet provider immediately. Provide the transaction hash and destination address; blockchain transfers are generally difficult to reverse, but the provider may be able to flag an account.
- Change exposed passwords, revoke unknown sessions and enable two-factor authentication. If you gave an identity document, ask the issuing authority or a national identity-protection service what monitoring is available.
- Report the incident to Instagram, the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FBI advises victims to stop all contact.
Recovery is not guaranteed. Be wary of anyone who now promises to recover your money for an upfront fee; that is a common second-stage fraud.
If someone threatens to share intimate images
Do not pay, negotiate or send additional material. Paying does not guarantee deletion and can signal that more demands will work. Preserve the threats, account identifiers, payment requests and URLs. Report the account and extortion to Instagram and the FBI; the FTC directs people facing this type of extortion to the FBI. Consider telling a trusted person immediately, especially if you are under 18 or feel unsafe. If there is an immediate threat of physical harm, contact local emergency services.

What the U.S. data shows—and what it does not
FTC statistics illustrate the scale and channels of reported harm, not the probability that any individual Instagram account is fraudulent. In 2022, consumers reported nearly 70,000 romance scams and $1.3 billion in losses, with a median reported loss of $4,400. The FTC says reports capture only a fraction of total harm.
- Among 2022 romance-scam loss reports that identified a contact method, 40% said contact began on social media.
- Among those reports that identified social media and named a specific platform, 29% named Instagram. This is not a percentage of all romance scams or all Instagram users.
- Cryptocurrency and bank wires together represented more than 60% of reported romance-scam losses in 2022. Among reporters who identified a payment method, 24% said gift cards were used; the FTC’s footnotes define the reporting subsets and exclusions.
- About 58% of 2022 sextortion reports that identified a contact method cited social media. Within reports naming a specific platform, Instagram was named by 41% and Snapchat by 31%.

A safer way to continue an online connection
- Keep early conversations on the platform where you met until identity and intentions are clearer.
- Set a personal rule that no online-only contact receives money, account access, codes or intimate images.
- Use a live video call only as one check among several; a prerecorded clip or manipulated video is not proof.
- For a first meeting, choose a public location, tell someone your plans, arrange your own transportation and do not share your home address.
- Do not let embarrassment delay reporting. Scammers rely on secrecy and the fear that a victim will be judged.
The decisive question is not whether the profile looks convincing. It is whether the person’s identity and behavior remain consistent under independent checks, respect your boundaries and never require money, credentials or intimate material to continue.

Is this Instagram account real?
You cannot establish authenticity from a badge, follower count, attractive photos or a polished biography. Search the person’s name, job, location and images independently, compare the results with the story, and ask someone you trust to review the messages. A mismatch is a serious warning sign; a clean search is not proof that the account is genuine.
How can I tell if someone I met online is a romance scammer?
Look for a cluster of behaviors: unusually fast declarations of affection, pressure to leave the dating service or Instagram, demands for secrecy, repeated excuses for not meeting, and later requests for money, account access, codes, intimate images or sensitive details. One canceled date may be innocent, but repetition combined with pressure should end the interaction.

What should I do if an online date asks me for money?
Do not send a small amount to test the story or prove your feelings. Stop, discuss the situation with a trusted person, preserve the messages and report and block the account. If you already paid, contact the bank, payment app, gift-card issuer, wire service or cryptocurrency provider immediately and ask whether the transaction can be stopped. Recovery is not guaranteed.
Does a blue Instagram badge prove someone is genuine?
No. A badge, large audience, comments and professional-looking images do not verify that a romantic contact is the person described or that the account is currently controlled by its owner. Identity consistency, independent searches, pressure-free communication and a willingness to meet safely matter more. Any request for money or credentials remains high risk regardless of profile status.
Should I move the conversation to WhatsApp, Telegram or another private app?
Moving immediately is a warning sign because it reduces platform visibility and safety tools. Keep early communication where you met while you verify identity. Do not let a request for secrecy or a demand to switch channels rush you into sharing your phone number, address, documents, payment details or intimate images.
Can a reverse-image search prove that a profile is real?
No. Reverse-image searching can reveal a photograph used under another name, on stock-photo pages or across unrelated accounts. A result like that is meaningful evidence of a problem. No result may simply mean the image is new, private, altered or not indexed, so it cannot certify authenticity.
What if an Instagram message says it is from support?
Do not click its link, sign in, install software or provide a password, backup code or two-factor code. Open Instagram yourself and check the Emails from Instagram area and current security settings. Meta says genuine account communications can be checked there. Treat unexpected urgency, suspension threats and requests for codes as phishing warnings.
Where should I report an Instagram romance scam?
Use Instagram’s in-app report controls from the profile, message or content, then block the account. In the United States, report financial fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and internet crime at ic3.gov. Elsewhere, contact your national fraud authority and payment provider. Preserve usernames, URLs, screenshots, receipts and dates before deleting anything.
