Test a used PS5 Pro in person before paying: inspect it without opening the case, check the DualSense in a game or menus, read and eject a known-good PS5 game disc if a drive is fitted, then run a game and watch for warnings or instability. A brief demonstration can reveal faults, but it cannot guarantee long-term reliability.
What to bring and ask before testing
- Bring or borrow a known-good PS5 game disc if the console has a disc drive. A second supported disc helps separate a damaged disc from a drive problem.
- Ask the seller whether the detachable disc drive is included. The PS5 Pro has a disc-drive port, but a console without the drive cannot demonstrate disc-reading function. Sony’s manuals index lists an instruction manual for the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive; verify the exact drive and console compatibility before buying a replacement. Sony manuals
- Ask the seller to power on the console and show that it reaches the home screen. Agree on enough time to test it and clarify the return option before you buy.
Inspect the console without opening it
Check the covers, ports, cables, stand and controller for cracks, missing pieces, liquid residue or other visible damage. Look for signs the enclosure has been opened, but do not remove covers or attempt a teardown. Sony warns, “To avoid electrical shock, do not open the enclosure. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.” PS5 Pro Safety Guide
Set the console on a stable surface with its airflow areas clear. Sony says PS5 Pro takes in and exhausts air through the rear and bottom surfaces. Do not put it in a closed cabinet or block those areas during the test. Sony’s PS5 Pro engineering article
Test the DualSense controller
Connect the included controller and test it in a game or system menus. If it will not pair wirelessly, first connect it by USB; then try wireless again. A wired connection that works does not prove the wireless connection or battery is healthy.

- Move each stick slowly through its range, then release it. Watch for unintended movement, jitter, dead zones or a stick that catches.
- Press L3 and R3, every face button, all D-pad directions, the shoulder buttons, PS button, mute button and touch pad. Check that L2 and R2 move smoothly through their travel.
- Check vibration and, if relevant to you, the controller speaker or headset connection.
- Confirm it charges over USB and remains connected wirelessly for the time available. This is a basic functional check, not a battery-capacity measurement.
If pairing alone is the problem, Sony’s reset guidance is to turn off the PS5, disconnect the controller, hold its reset button for at least five seconds, then reconnect it with the official USB cable and press PS. Resetting may help with pairing; it does not establish that the sticks, buttons or battery are sound. Check whether the disc drive reads and ejects discs
Use a known-good PS5 game disc, not only a movie. Check that the drive accepts it, the console recognizes it, the game launches and remains readable, and the disc ejects normally. If possible, repeat with another supported disc.

For a vertically positioned PS5 Pro on its stand, Sony says the labeled side of the disc faces left on insertion. If a disc does not read, clean dirt or fingerprints with a soft, clean cloth and try another game, Blu-ray Disc or DVD. Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so neither is valid test media; regional or territorial restrictions may also apply to some media. - One disc fails but another works: the first disc may be the issue. Do not conclude the drive is faulty from a single questionable disc.
- Several known-good supported discs fail: treat the drive as suspect, especially if loading or ejection repeatedly behaves abnormally.
- The drive is missing: the console cannot be checked for disc reading in its current condition. Confirm compatibility before considering a separate drive.
Do not remove covers or play the console with a cover off. Sony’s stuck-disc guidance warns against turning on or playing the console with the cover off; leave stuck-disc recovery to the owner or qualified service. Sony disc troubleshooting

Look for overheating warnings and instability
Start a game and let it run while you observe the console. Watch for an on-screen high-temperature warning, an unexpected shutdown, freezes or repeated instability. Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide specifies an operating temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C. That is the stated operating range for the console, not an internal-component temperature reading or a DIY pass/fail threshold. Sony does not specify a timed consumer stress test in the cited material, so there is no official number of minutes to wait. PS5 Pro Safety Guide
Some fan sound or warm exhaust by itself is not an official failure threshold. Sony’s 2024 engineering article describes the Pro’s airflow design, but does not provide a consumer noise or exhaust-temperature limit. If a high-temperature message appears, stop the test and power the console down. Let it cool, then check that it is in a ventilated position with airflow areas unobstructed. Give more weight to a fault that repeats across checks than to one failure with an uncharged controller or questionable disc. A controller that repeatedly drifts, multiple known-good discs that fail, or a console that shows temperature warnings or shuts down makes the purchase riskier. If the seller will not allow the console to be powered on and tested, appearance alone cannot establish that these functions work.
