Test the broadcast first as a private YouTube stream, or use unlisted visibility if a trusted reviewer needs the watch link. Connect your encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview, then check a representative stretch of gameplay, audio, stream health and playback before you switch to a public broadcast. YouTube does not have a separate “rerun” mode for this: the same encoder-based test workflow applies to gameplay and prerecorded gaming content.
1. Create a restricted test stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream and choose Private or Unlisted visibility. YouTube lists these options for encoder streams alongside Public. Manage live stream settings
- Choose Private when you want access tightly limited. Choose Unlisted when you need to share the watch link with a trusted reviewer. Before relying on either setting, check the stream’s visibility and test access using the account or device the reviewer will use.
- Keep the test separate from the intended public event in your schedule, and make sure you are editing the right stream before changing visibility.

2. Connect the encoder and inspect the preview
- Open the test stream’s setup in YouTube Studio and copy its stream key and the YouTube Live server URL into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it with viewers.
- Start the encoder and send the test signal. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview; do not select Go live for the public broadcast until you have checked it.

3. Match the test to the real gaming broadcast
Do not judge the setup from a static menu screen. Run a representative segment with the same gameplay movement and audio mix planned for the public show. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to test before streaming and to check audio and movement; for a gaming stream, also inspect overlays as a practical part of the picture check. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Picture: Check that the game is framed correctly, motion looks as intended, and overlays are visible rather than cut off or obscuring important play.
- Audio: Listen for game sound and voice, if used. Check that neither is missing, distorted or drowned out by the other.
- Synchronization: Confirm that visible action and sound appear aligned during movement and effects.
- Feed stability: Watch for freezes, dropped frames, repeated buffering or a preview that stops updating.
4. Check encoder settings and upload headroom
The right bitrate depends on the selected resolution, frame rate and connection; use YouTube’s current resolution-specific recommendations rather than choosing a number in isolation. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant-bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a four-second maximum, and recommends RTMPS as the encrypted extension of RTMP. YouTube encoder settings

- Run an upload speed test and choose a stream bitrate the connection can sustain reliably.
- Leave about 20% upload bandwidth above the total outgoing stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Other devices or applications sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. YouTube streaming tips
- If stream health is poor, reduce the encoder load or address the network constraint, then repeat the test. Do not assume a setting that works on an idle network will hold during the public broadcast.
5. Verify the viewer experience and stream health
- In Live Control Room, check stream health and read any displayed errors or warnings. YouTube provides health and real-time stream metrics there. See your live stream’s metrics
- Open the test’s YouTube watch page and check playback as a viewer, not only in the encoder preview. If viewers will watch on a channel page or mobile device, check those surfaces too.
- If a reviewer is helping, have them open the link while the test is active and report whether they can access it and whether video and audio play properly.
- Before the public show, return to Studio and confirm the intended public stream’s visibility and settings. Do not make the test public merely to diagnose a private or unlisted setup.
6. Allow time to fix problems and check recordings
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Use that lead time to resolve preview, audio, network or access issues rather than discovering them at the public start. When the test is over, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream through the YouTube workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check the actual recording in Studio before relying on it.
