If Windows exposes calibration for that device, open Settings > Calibrate…. There is no universal controller-calibration page in the modern Windows Settings app, and not every controller provides the legacy calibration wizard.
Use Windows’ built-in controller test first
On Windows 11, the reliable built-in route for testing a gaming controller is the legacy Game Controllers panel. Press Windows + R, type joy.cpl, and press Enter. Select your controller, choose Properties, and open the Test tab.
That page lets you check whether Windows receives button presses, stick movement, triggers, and other axes. If your controller exposes Windows’ calibration interface, you can then open Properties > Settings > Calibrate… and follow the wizard. The three dots in Calibrate… are part of the current button label.
However, calibration is not universal. Some controllers show only Test and About, with no Settings tab or calibration button. In that case, use the controller’s own software or a game’s input settings rather than assuming Windows is malfunctioning.

How to test a controller with joy.cpl
- Connect the controller by USB, or pair it over Bluetooth.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - In Game Controllers, select the controller you want to check.
- Click Properties.
- Choose the Test tab.
Press every button, move both sticks through their full ranges, and operate the triggers. The corresponding indicators should respond without sticking, jumping, or remaining active after you release the control.
Microsoft identifies the Test tab as the Windows controller test page in its controller troubleshooting guidance. See Microsoft’s controller troubleshooting documentation for the Windows testing route.
How to calibrate the controller in Windows
Calibration is available only when the controller and its driver expose the Windows calibration controls.
- Open
joy.cplwith Windows + R. - Select the controller in Game Controllers and click Properties.
- Open the Settings tab.
- Click Calibrate….
- Follow the on-screen instructions, which may ask you to center or move the controller controls through their ranges.
- Return to the Test tab and check the sticks, triggers, buttons, and axes again.
Calibration changes how Windows interprets the device’s input range. It may help with an incorrectly centered stick or an axis whose reported range is wrong. It cannot repair worn stick hardware, a damaged cable, a failing sensor, or a trigger that physically sticks. If the same control behaves incorrectly after calibration, test the controller on another USB port or computer and check the manufacturer’s software or support tools.

There is no universal controller-calibration page in Windows Settings
Windows 11’s modern Settings app does not contain a general-purpose controller calibration page. The graphical calibration route remains the legacy Game Controllers panel opened with joy.cpl; the redesigned Settings interface did not replace that entry point. Microsoft’s current Bluetooth instructions are separate from controller calibration and use Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
Consequently, instructions telling you to open Windows Settings and look for a universal “Controller Calibration” page are inaccurate. The exact tabs available in Properties depend on the controller, its connection mode, and its driver.
If the controller does not appear in joy.cpl
A controller can be visible in Windows Settings or Device Manager yet be absent from Game Controllers. That means the legacy Windows interface cannot test or calibrate it through joy.cpl; it does not, by itself, prove that the controller is defective.
Work through these checks:
- Try a direct USB connection. If you are using a hub, adapter, or dock, connect the controller directly to the PC where possible.
- Check the controller mode. Some devices support multiple modes, such as XInput and another HID mode. The mode can affect which software enumerates the device and which controls it exposes.
- Disconnect virtual-controller software temporarily. Steam Input, DS4Windows, and similar tools can create a virtual controller. Windows or a game may then see the virtual device instead of the physical one, or see both.
- Look for duplicate entries. A physical controller and a virtual XInput/HID controller can produce duplicate inputs or confusing test results. Close remapping tools and retest with only the intended input path active.
- Try another USB port and cable. A charging-only or damaged cable can prevent proper data communication.
- Restart after changing controller software. Some virtual drivers and remappers continue presenting an entry until their software or Windows is restarted.
Specialized devices can expose only the tabs supplied by their manufacturer’s driver. A racing wheel, arcade controller, flight stick, or other advanced device may therefore require the manufacturer’s configuration utility even if it appears in joy.cpl.

How to pair a controller over Bluetooth in Windows 11
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode according to its instructions.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled, then choose the option to add a device and select the controller when it appears.
- After pairing, open
joy.cpland check whether Windows exposes the controller in Game Controllers.
If it does not appear, verify that the controller is powered on, charged, within range, and still in pairing mode. Microsoft also documents a Bluetooth devices discovery setting under Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Default searches for common Bluetooth devices, while Advanced searches for all types of Bluetooth devices. If the controller is not discovered, try Advanced.
Bluetooth interference can also affect responsiveness. Microsoft notes that an unshielded USB device connected close to a USB 3.0 port can interfere with Bluetooth. Move the controller’s receiver or Bluetooth adapter away from nearby USB 3.0 hardware where possible, and test with nearby USB devices disconnected. Refer to Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide for additional connection checks.
Testing in Steam
Steam provides a separate controller test. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input.
Use Steam’s test to confirm what Steam Input receives, but do not treat it as a replacement for the Windows test. Steam’s input layer and the legacy Windows joy.cpl layer can enumerate controllers differently. A controller may work in Steam while being absent from Game Controllers, or Steam may expose controls through a virtual controller that Windows does not show in the same way.

This distinction is useful when diagnosing a game:
| Where the controller works | What that suggests |
|---|---|
joy.cpl and Steam |
Windows and Steam both receive input; a game-specific configuration, profile, or mapping may be the problem. |
| Steam only | Steam Input or another translation layer may be providing the working input. The physical device may not be exposed through the legacy Windows interface. |
joy.cpl only |
The controller reaches Windows, but Steam’s configuration, support mode, or selected layout may need attention. |
| Neither test | Check power, pairing, cable, USB port, device mode, drivers, and hardware on another computer. |
Microsoft documents the current Steam test path in its guide to connecting a controller to a Windows 11 PC.
What to do when the calibration button is missing
Do not try to force the Windows wizard to appear. A missing Settings tab or Calibrate… button usually means that the device or its driver does not provide that interface.
Choose the appropriate alternative:
- Xbox and other XInput controllers: test the controls in
joy.cpland configure supported options through the controller or game software. The presence of XInput support does not guarantee a Windows calibration button. - PlayStation controllers: Steam Input or another compatibility layer may translate the controller into a virtual device. Test with that layer enabled and disabled so you know which device a game is receiving.
- Racing wheels, flight sticks, and specialist controllers: use the manufacturer’s configuration utility when it provides device-specific dead zones, ranges, force feedback, or profiles. Windows’ basic wizard is not a universal replacement.
- Controllers that work in a browser tester or manufacturer utility: use that result as evidence that the hardware is communicating, but remember that it does not guarantee that
joy.cplor every game will enumerate the same device.
A practical diagnosis for stick drift and bad inputs
- Test without a remapper first. Close Steam, DS4Windows, and other controller tools if possible, then check the physical device in
joy.cpl. - Check the resting position. Release the stick and watch whether its axis remains away from center. Record whether the movement is slight, intermittent, or extreme.
- Check the complete range. Move the stick slowly to each edge and corner. Gaps, sudden jumps, or a failure to reach part of the range point to a device, driver, or connection problem.
- Run Calibrate… only if it is available. Afterward, repeat the Test-tab check. If the resting value remains unstable, calibration has not solved the underlying issue.
- Compare connection methods. Test wired and Bluetooth connections separately when both are supported. A problem on only one connection method narrows the diagnosis.
- Compare software layers. Check Windows, Steam’s Test Input, and the affected game separately. Differences identify where the input is being translated or lost.
- Test another computer or controller. This separates a controller fault from a Windows, Bluetooth, USB, or game configuration problem.
Dead-zone settings inside a game can hide mild drift, but they do not repair the controller and can reduce aiming precision. Use them as a game-specific workaround after confirming the controller’s actual behavior.

- Seeing a device in Windows Settings does not guarantee that it will appear in
joy.cpl. - Seeing a device in
joy.cpldoes not guarantee that every game supports its protocol or all of its controls. - Steam’s Test Input checks Steam’s input layer, not necessarily the raw physical device as exposed by Windows.
- A virtual controller can be the reason a game works, the reason a physical device disappears, or the reason inputs are duplicated.
- A controller with only Test and About in its Properties window may be functioning normally; the missing calibration wizard can be a driver or device limitation.
Quick checklist
- Connect or pair the controller and confirm it has power.
- Open
joy.cplwith Windows + R. - Use Properties > Test to inspect every control.
- Use Properties > Settings > Calibrate… only if that tab and button exist.
- For Bluetooth, check pairing mode, battery, range, and Bluetooth devices discovery > Advanced.
- Test Steam separately at Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input.
- Disable remappers temporarily if you see missing, duplicate, or unexpected controller entries.
- Use manufacturer software for specialist devices or controllers without Windows calibration support.

Where is the controller calibration tool in Windows 11?
Open joy.cpl, select the controller, choose Properties, open Settings, and select Calibrate…—but only if that tab and button are present. Windows does not provide a universal calibration page in the modern Settings app, and some controllers do not support the legacy wizard.
Does every gaming controller have a Windows calibration button?
No. A controller’s Settings tab and Calibrate… button depend on the device and driver. Some controllers expose only Test and About, while specialist devices may require the manufacturer’s configuration software.
Is Steam’s controller test the same as the Windows test?
No. Steam’s Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input checks Steam’s input layer. Windows’ joy.cpl test checks the legacy Game Controllers interface, and the two layers can expose different devices or controls.
Why does my controller work but not appear in joy.cpl?
Not necessarily. Windows Settings or Device Manager can show a controller that does not appear in joy.cpl. This means the legacy Game Controllers interface cannot test or calibrate it through that route; it does not alone prove that the hardware is defective.
