Mohgwyn Palace is a late-game underground sub-region of Siofra River, ruled by Mohg, Lord of Blood. Its blood-red lake, ruined ancient structures, hostile cultists, famous rune-farming hillside, and Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum make it one of ELDEN RING’s most distinctive areas. It also becomes the base game’s gateway to Shadow of the Erdtree after Mohg’s defeat.
What is Mohgwyn Palace?
Mohgwyn Palace is a late-game underground sub-region of the Siofra River area in ELDEN RING. It lies on an island far east of Nokron, Eternal City, and is dominated by a blood-red lake, ruined stone structures, hostile blood cultists, and the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. The mausoleum is Mohg’s stronghold and leads to the arena of Mohg, Lord of Blood.
The area matters for three reasons: it is one of the game’s most distinctive regions, it contains a major demigod and Shardbearer encounter, and defeating Mohg unlocks the route from Miquella’s cocoon into the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion’s Realm of Shadow.
Do not confuse this location with the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. That area contains Mohg, the Omen, a separate encounter. Mohgwyn Palace contains the principal Mohg, Lord of Blood fight.

How to reach Mohgwyn Palace
There are two main routes. The Consecrated Snowfield route uses a Sending Gate and is the direct exploration option once that region is accessible. White-Faced Varre’s quest provides an earlier alternate route.
Route 1: Consecrated Snowfield Sending Gate
- Reach the Consecrated Snowfield.
- Find the Sending Gate near the area’s western cliffs.
- Use the gate to teleport to the southeastern side of Mohgwyn Palace.
- Travel toward the Palace Approach Ledge-Road Site of Grace, then continue across the blood lake and through the ruins toward the mausoleum.
This is the conventional non-quest route, but access to the Consecrated Snowfield requires substantial progress through the main game and the relevant map area.
Route 2: White-Faced Varre’s quest
Progress White-Faced Varre’s questline until he gives you the Pureblood Knight’s Medal. Using the medal teleports you directly to the mausoleum entrance area.
This route is particularly valuable if you want to reach Palace Approach Ledge-Road before you can normally access the Consecrated Snowfield. It can also open the area’s well-known rune-farming location relatively early, although the enemies remain dangerous to an underprepared character.
Quest and multiplayer requirements have changed since the original 2022 release. Version 1.06 added an alternative way to advance Varre’s quest by defeating a new NPC rather than relying exclusively on the earlier multiplayer-invasion step. If you are following an older guide, check its version before assuming that every online-invasion instruction is still required.
Mohgwyn Palace map and navigation
The region is easier to understand as three connected sections:
- Palace Approach Ledge-Road: the southeastern approach, overlooking the blood swamp and the hillside crowded with Albinaurics.
- The blood lake and ruins: an open, hazardous area containing hostile creatures, ruined structures, and paths toward the mausoleum.
- Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum: the temple-like ruin built into the western rock formation. Its interior route leads through the two mausoleum Sites of Grace and ends at Miquella’s cocoon and Mohg’s arena.

Where to find the map fragment
The map fragment for Mohgwyn Palace is on a corpse in the ruins near the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance Site of Grace. If the red lake and surrounding cliffs are difficult to read at first, collect this fragment before attempting a full sweep of the region.
Enemies and hazards
Mohgwyn Palace combines open terrain with poor visibility, blood-filled pools, vertical cliffs, and enemies that can punish a rushed approach. Its listed enemy types include:

The hillside near Palace Approach Ledge-Road is especially dangerous because a large Albinauric group occupies terrain commonly used for rune farming. Giant Crows can also turn the approach into a chase across narrow ledges and cliffs.
Sanguine Nobles and the blood cult
Sanguine Nobles emerge from blood pools and are associated with the accursed blood connected to Mohg’s intended dynasty. Their appearance reinforces that the Palace is not simply an abandoned underground ruin: it has been occupied and repurposed by a faction built around blood ritual, sacrifice, and devotion.
Mohg, Lord of Blood
Mohg’s arena is at the end of the mausoleum route, beside Miquella’s cocoon at the Cocoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace. Mohg is a demigod and Shardbearer, and his encounter is one of the major sequence-flexible fights in the game.
The battle’s identity is inseparable from the Palace’s imagery: bloodflame, ritual ceremony, the Formless Mother, and Mohg’s attempt to found a new dynasty. When discussing the lore, distinguish between what the game establishes through item descriptions and dialogue and what remains interpretation—particularly theories about the precise nature of Mohg’s relationship with the Formless Mother and Miquella.

After Mohg is defeated, interact with the arm extending from Miquella’s cocoon. With Shadow of the Erdtree installed, this provides the transition into the expansion’s Realm of Shadow. Mohgwyn Palace is therefore not merely a side dungeon: it is the base game’s physical gateway to the expansion’s setting.
Rune farming at Palace Approach Ledge-Road
Palace Approach Ledge-Road is one of ELDEN RING’s most recognizable rune-farming locations. The nearby Albinauric hillside contains a large group of enemies that can be cleared quickly by a build with a strong area-of-effect attack.
Albinauric group method
- Rest at the Palace Approach Ledge-Road Site of Grace.
- Move toward the nearby hillside populated by Second-Generation Albinaurics.
- Use an efficient area-of-effect attack to clear as many enemies as your build can handle safely.
- Return to the Site of Grace to reset the group and repeat.
This method is fastest when your character can eliminate the group consistently. If the enemies survive long enough to surround you, the theoretical rune rate is less important than having a reliable clear.
Giant Crow method
Players without a strong area-of-effect build can shoot the nearby Giant Crow from a safe position. The crow typically charges toward the player and falls from the cliff. Rest at the Site of Grace to reset it, then repeat the shot-and-reset cycle.

The crow method is slower but simple and comparatively low-risk once the firing position is established. Neither method guarantees a single universal “best” rune yield. Results vary with New Game cycle, active rune bonuses, equipment, clearing speed, and whether you farm the Albinaurics or the crow.

Multiplayer and patch notes
Mohgwyn Palace has had version-specific multiplayer behavior. Version 1.06 addressed the area in connection with summoning-pool behavior and also changed the available route for advancing White-Faced Varre’s questline. Version 1.12 clarified that selecting distant summoning pools excludes Mohgwyn Palace even when the pool is active. Nearby-only summoning remains possible within the area.
In practical terms, players looking for co-op in Mohgwyn Palace should use nearby summoning rather than assuming that a distant-area search will include this region. Exact behavior depends on the game version, so include the version number when documenting multiplayer instructions.

Mohgwyn Palace is an inversion of the game’s familiar royal spaces. Instead of a functioning golden court or a monumental capital, it presents a blood-saturated ruin occupied by a would-be ruler. The name combines Mohg with “-gwyn,” signaling the dynasty he intends to establish.
The ruins are associated with an ancient civilization and function as its grave. Mohg does not build his political and religious project in a neutral location; he takes over the remains of an older underground culture and turns them into the seat of his coming dynasty. That creates three overlapping historical layers:

Optional reference books for Mohgwyn Palace
You do not need a guidebook to complete Mohgwyn Palace. However, a physical reference can be useful for a location with several Sites of Grace, hidden pickups, upgrade materials, enemy routes, and lore connections. The ELDEN RING Books of Knowledge Volume 1: The Lands Between is the strongest fit because it is designed as a comprehensive game reference rather than a generic map or unofficial lore product. Check the current edition, stock, and platform or regional availability before buying.
Readers more interested in the Palace’s visual language than in navigation may prefer the ELDEN RING Official Art Book Volume I. It is a design and concept-art resource, not a substitute for a gameplay walkthrough. Players who have not yet bought the expansion can also consider an ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree Edition, subject to the edition and platform available in their region; Mohg’s cocoon is the relevant story link between the base game and the expansion.
