How to Test How Much Traffic Your VPS Can Handle

A VPS has no fixed visitor limit. Measure its real capacity by testing the complete application path against explicit throughput, latency, error and resource objectives.

There is no universal visitor limit for a VPS. Its practical capacity is the highest representative workload your complete application can sustain while meeting your latency, error-rate, availability and resource targets. Measure that limit with a controlled baseline, gradual ramp, breakpoint test and soak test—not by waiting for CPU to reach a particular percentage.

What “how much traffic” actually means

A visitor is not a unit of load. One visitor may request a cached HTML page once; another may authenticate, search, submit forms, fetch images, open a WebSocket and trigger dozens of database queries. Capacity therefore has to be expressed as a workload envelope: a defined mix of requests, concurrency or request rate, duration and service-level objectives (SLOs).

Your result is useful only when it answers all of these questions:

  • Which URLs or API operations were exercised?
  • Were users authenticated, and what cache, cookie and session behavior did they have?
  • What request rate or number of concurrent journeys was sustained?
  • What were the p95 and p99 response times and failed-request rate?
  • How long did the VPS sustain the load?
  • What application version, VPS size, region and generator setup were used?

The limiting component may be the database, cache, TLS processing, queue, storage, a third-party call, network bandwidth or connection limits rather than raw CPU. Test the entire path that a real user takes.

Set acceptance criteria before generating load

Write the pass/fail rules before the first serious run. Use your application’s SLOs instead of an arbitrary CPU ceiling. A practical test definition includes:

Criterion Example rule Why it matters
Throughput At least 120 requests per second for the production request mix Defines the amount of work the service must complete
Latency p95 below 400 ms; p99 below 800 ms Percentiles expose slow-tail user experiences hidden by averages
Errors Less than 1% failed requests, with no unexplained 5xx spike A fast error is still a failed user transaction
Availability No outage, restart or health-check failure during the run Protects against capacity that looks good only until a process dies
Resources Headroom kept below your chosen CPU, memory, disk, connection and queue limits Leaves room for bursts, deployments and background jobs
Abort condition Stop automatically if error rate, latency or a critical resource crosses its limit Prevents a test from becoming an incident

Keep the acceptance limits with the test script and report. Changing the threshold after seeing the result makes comparisons meaningless.

Build a workload that resembles real users

Map the important journeys

List the flows that consume meaningful resources, such as landing-page navigation, login, catalog or search queries, checkout, file upload, API polling and any game-related account or leaderboard operation. Include both anonymous and authenticated paths when both exist. A test that hits only a static home page can greatly overstate capacity.

Model request mix and pacing

Assign a proportion to each operation based on access logs or product expectations. Include realistic payload sizes, headers, cookies, session tokens and varied data. Add think time or pacing between actions so that virtual users behave like people rather than an unbounded request loop. If one screen causes ten backend calls, decide whether one iteration means the whole screen or one HTTP request, then report both iterations and total HTTP requests.

Exclude third-party requests unless you own the service or have explicit permission to test it. External payment, analytics, image or authentication providers can throttle your test and make your VPS look responsible for someone else’s limit.

Control cache state

Run separate scenarios for a warm cache and a cold cache if both occur in production. Record whether an object cache, page cache, CDN, database buffer pool or application cache was populated. A warm-cache result cannot be applied to a cache-miss burst without qualification.

Use safe test data

Use a staging database where possible. In a controlled production window, use accounts and records created for testing, disable irreversible actions, and ensure that generated email, payment, notification and webhook side effects cannot reach real users.

Prepare the VPS and load generators

Instrument the target

Collect application logs and host metrics with timestamps synchronized to the load generator. At minimum, capture CPU utilization, load average, memory, swap, disk I/O and network throughput. Add database connection count and query latency, queue depth, worker or thread utilization, cache hit rate, open connections, file descriptors and HTTP status distribution where available.

Check generator headroom

The machine sending requests can saturate before the VPS. Watch generator CPU, memory, network throughput, file descriptors and ephemeral ports. Compare generator-side and target-side measurements throughout the run. Grafana reports that one k6 instance can run roughly 30,000–40,000 virtual users depending on hardware and, in some cases, up to 300,000 requests per second; those are observations of generator capacity, not limits for a VPS.

For high loads, use non-GUI execution and multiple generators or a hosted execution service. Ensure the network path between generators and target has sufficient bandwidth and does not introduce a bottleneck. If geography matters, repeat from a location near your users; Internet distance and routing affect latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a safe environment

Do not run an aggressive test against infrastructure you do not own or lack permission to test. A load test can degrade production performance. Prefer staging or a controlled production window, begin with a low rate, and configure an automatic stop condition.

Run the test in controlled stages

  1. Define the scenario and SLOs. Record the request mix, authentication state, cache state, target rate or virtual-user count, p95/p99 limits, error limit, resource limits and abort rules.
  2. Run a small baseline. Start with a load that is clearly safe. Record request rate, average and percentile latency, failures, status codes, active users or connections, and every target and generator metric.
  3. Ramp gradually. Increase virtual users or request rate in small steps. Hold each step long enough to reach steady behavior; a brief spike can hide queue growth and delayed database saturation.
  4. Check each step against the SLOs. Stop or hold the test if latency, errors, resource use or availability crosses a predefined limit. Do not continue simply to obtain a larger number.
  5. Run a breakpoint test. Continue the staged ramp until the first acceptance criterion fails. Record the last passing step and the first failing step. Practical capacity is below the failure point, not equal to it.
  6. Add headroom. Reserve capacity for bursts, deployments, cron jobs, backups, cache misses and traffic uncertainty. The production limit should be lower than the measured breaking point.
  7. Run a soak test. Hold a realistic sustained load for an extended period. Look for memory leaks, gradual queue growth, connection exhaustion, storage effects, thermal throttling and slow degradation that a short ramp cannot reveal.
  8. Repeat important runs. Keep the application version, VPS plan, region, cache state, test data, duration, thresholds and generator configuration identical when comparing results. Change one variable at a time.

Choose a workload model and tool

Decision point Grafana k6 Apache JMeter
Primary model Virtual-user scenarios or a specified request-rate model Scripted test plans with thread groups and controllers
Browser and protocol coverage HTTP and protocol testing, with browser testing available Broad protocol support through test-plan components and plugins
Automation Script-driven and designed for command-line, local, Kubernetes or cloud execution Scripted plans with command-line execution and distributed controller/worker operation
Best fit Readable code, explicit VU journeys, request-rate tests and CI-style runs Complex visual test plans, extensive protocol components and distributed self-managed runs
Operational caution Monitor the k6 process so it does not become the bottleneck Use CLI mode for real tests; the graphical interface consumes resources
Metrics Requests, failed requests, duration percentiles, VUs and custom checks Throughput, response times, assertions, errors and listeners or exported results

k6’s documentation describes breakpoint tests for finding the point where a system fails and soak tests for exposing degradation over time. Apache’s guidance says to use CLI (non-GUI) mode for real load tests and to match JMeter and Java versions. Select the tool your team can version, review and run repeatably; the tool does not remove the need for a representative scenario.

A k6 request-rate test

Use a request-rate model when you need to answer “Can the service sustain 120 requests per second?” Define how one iteration maps to a user journey and count all HTTP calls generated by that journey. A request-rate scenario is useful for an API or a known arrival rate; a VU model is usually more natural for concurrent user flows with pacing.

export const options = {
  scenarios: {
    production_mix: {
      executor: 'constant-arrival-rate',
      rate: 120,
      timeUnit: '1s',
      duration: '30m',
      preAllocatedVUs: 50,
      maxVUs: 200,
    },
  },
};

Treat the numbers in this example as a structure, not a recommendation for your VPS. Set the rate, duration and VU allocation from your own acceptance criteria. Add checks for status codes and business outcomes, and tag requests so slow endpoints can be separated in the results.

A k6 virtual-user test

Use virtual users when each simulated user performs a sequence such as open, authenticate, search and submit, with think time between actions. Report active VUs, completed iterations and total HTTP requests; these are different quantities.

A JMeter test plan

Build a plan with a thread group, HTTP request samplers, realistic controllers, assertions, parameterized data and timers for pacing. Run the plan in CLI mode and write results to a file for later analysis. For a larger run, distribute controller and worker processes, then verify that workers have spare CPU, memory, network, file descriptors and ports.

Measure the metrics that reveal the bottleneck

Area Metrics to record What a change can indicate
Traffic and outcome Request count and rate, completed iterations, active VUs or connections, HTTP status distribution, failed-request rate Whether offered load is actually being completed and which failures occur
Latency Average, p50, p95 and p99 duration; endpoint-level percentiles Queueing and tail-user impact that averages conceal
CPU Total and per-process utilization, load average, run queue Compute saturation, lock contention or too many workers
Memory Used and available memory, swap activity, process resident size Leaks, cache pressure or swapping
Storage Read/write throughput, I/O wait, latency, free space Database or log writes limiting request completion
Database Connections, query latency, slow-query count, locks and pool wait time Backend saturation before application CPU is full
Queues and workers Queue depth, worker utilization, job age and backlog Asynchronous work falling behind
Network Ingress and egress throughput, retransmits, connection counts and TLS work Bandwidth, packet or connection limits

k6 identifies requests, failed requests and request duration as core metrics. Provider monitoring APIs can supply host-level CPU, memory, load, bandwidth and HTTP measurements; use those alongside application and database telemetry rather than relying on one dashboard.

Find the first failing component

High CPU with stable memory and fast storage

Profile the hottest process, inspect worker and thread counts, and identify expensive endpoints or serialization. Optimize the endpoint or increase compute only after confirming that CPU, rather than a downstream dependency, is the constraint.

Memory growth, swap or worker termination

Check process resident memory, cache size, garbage collection and connection pools. A VPS that passes a short test but swaps during a soak test does not have that sustained capacity. Fix the leak or reduce concurrency before scaling.

Rising latency with moderate CPU

Look for database locks, pool wait time, queue depth, disk I/O wait, external calls and network delay. Moderate CPU does not prove spare capacity when requests are blocked elsewhere.

Errors only at high concurrency

Classify status codes and application exceptions. Check file-descriptor limits, ephemeral ports, connection pools, worker limits, rate limits and database max-connections settings. Distinguish target errors from generator or network errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generator saturation

If generator CPU, network, file descriptors or ports reach a limit while target metrics remain comfortable, the result measures the generator. Reduce the offered load, use more generators or use cloud execution, then repeat with generator-side headroom.

Cache-dependent results

Compare warm and cold runs separately. A cold-cache test can be dominated by database and storage work, while a warm-cache test may represent steady browsing. Publish which one passed rather than combining them into one number.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Interpret “maximum visitors” without misleading yourself

Convert capacity to visitors only after measuring the workload. Suppose a modeled visitor performs six HTTP requests over 30 seconds. At 120 requests per second, the equivalent average arrival rate is about 20 completed visitor journeys per second, or roughly 600 journeys per 30 seconds, provided the journey mix, pacing and cache state match the test. That is not a promise that 600 people can arrive simultaneously: a flash crowd, login burst or heavier page can produce a different result.

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Report the last passing step and its conditions. If 120 requests per second passes with p95 below 400 ms and less than 1% errors, while 140 fails the latency limit, say that 120 passed and 140 failed under the stated scenario. Do not call 140 the capacity merely because the server continued returning responses.

Safety rules for production tests

  • Obtain written authorization for every target and generator location.
  • Prefer staging; if production is necessary, choose a controlled window and notify operators.
  • Exclude third-party services and irreversible business actions.
  • Ramp in small increments and configure an automatic stop condition.
  • Keep an operator watching target and generator dashboards throughout the run.
  • Have rollback, process-restart and traffic-reduction procedures ready.
  • Stop immediately on outage symptoms, runaway queue growth, data corruption or unexpected external calls.

DigitalOcean’s load-testing guidance warns that tests can negatively affect production and uses a 1 CPU/512 MB VPS as an example environment in a 2014 tutorial. That small instance is a historical test setup, not a benchmark for every VPS plan.

Publish a reproducible capacity envelope

A useful report lets another engineer repeat the test and understand its limits. Include:

  • Test date and duration, including the soak-test length.
  • VPS CPU, memory, storage, operating-system image, region and network configuration.
  • Application, database and configuration versions.
  • Exact script or test-plan revision, request mix, payload sizes, authentication method, pacing and cache state.
  • Generator location, machine size, number of generators and whether execution was local, distributed or hosted.
  • Target rate or VU stages, step duration and abort thresholds.
  • Request rate, iterations, p50/p95/p99 latency, status distribution and failed-request rate.
  • CPU, memory, swap, disk, database, queue and network observations on both target and generators.
  • Last passing step, first failing step, suspected bottleneck and the headroom chosen for production.

A concise result might read: “On 15 October 2026, with application version 4.2 in the Frankfurt region and the production request mix, 120 requests per second passed for 30 minutes; p95 stayed below 400 ms, errors remained below 1%, CPU stayed below 75%, and no soak degradation appeared. The 140-request-per-second step failed the p95 limit.” The dates, region, version and thresholds make that statement meaningful; without them, “the VPS handles 120 requests per second” is not reproducible.

When to rerun the test

Repeat the envelope after changing the VPS size, application version, database schema or indexes, cache layer, TLS or web-server configuration, major dependency, region, traffic mix or hosting network. A result is also stale when real access logs show a different authenticated-to-anonymous ratio, larger payloads or more cache misses. Keep historical runs so regressions and improvements can be compared under identical conditions.
