If the symptoms repeatedly improve on Ethernet while the encoder settings and other conditions stay similar, that supports a local connection-path problem. It does not prove jitter: OBS and YouTube expose useful delivery and ingest warnings, but the official guidance reviewed here does not provide a jitter reading or a YouTube-specific jitter threshold.
What the available indicators can—and cannot—tell you
OBS defines network dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That counter is evidence of a delivery problem, not a direct measurement of upload jitter. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide does not identify its dropped-frame counter as a jitter meter.
YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health messages add a second perspective. YouTube’s API describes videoIngestionStarved as “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” Other health issues can point to encoder configuration, including bitrate, codec, frame rate, or keyframe frequency. These warnings help narrow down what is wrong with the incoming stream; they do not diagnose jitter. YouTube’s stream-health documentation lists the issue types.
Use the indicators together and note when each appears. OBS network drops coinciding with YouTube ingestion warnings are more informative than either alone, but still leave several possible causes: insufficient sustained upload capacity, Wi-Fi instability, ISP congestion or routing, hardware or driver problems, and software that affects network traffic.

Record the symptom and baseline conditions
In OBS, note the stream start and end times, target bitrate, resolution and frame rate, connection type, and the network dropped-frame count or percentage. Distinguish network drops from rendering lag and encoding lag; those describe different parts of the streaming pipeline, not upload jitter. Record when the failure happens and what you see or hear.
-
Check YouTube’s stream health at matching times
During a private or unlisted test, where suitable, monitor the stream-health panel in YouTube Live Control Room. Write down the exact warning and timestamp, then compare it with OBS’s log or statistics. YouTube recommends pretesting with representative movement and audio and monitoring stream health during a live event. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming guidance explains its testing and monitoring recommendations.

Make the baseline long enough to catch the fault
Intermittent dropouts may not appear in a short test. Run the stream long enough to capture the usual problem, and keep the content, encoder settings, and household network activity as similar as practical. Record the test’s start and end times and every dropout. There is no official minimum test duration; the aim is to observe the same conditions under which the problem normally occurs.
-
Change only the connection path
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, repeat the test over wired Ethernet, keeping bitrate, resolution, frame rate, content, and approximate network load stable. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If you need a cable to run this comparison, a Cat6 Ethernet cable can connect the streaming computer to the router; it enables the test, but cannot fix congestion or routing beyond your local network. Improvement over Ethernet suggests the wireless path may contribute, but it does not establish jitter as the mechanism or rule out an ISP or route problem.

Check sustainable upload capacity and encoder settings
A speed-test peak alone does not establish that the connection can sustain your stream’s bitrate throughout a session. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and publishes encoder recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its table, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60; at 1080p30 it recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not jitter cutoffs. Check YouTube’s current table before changing settings, as recommendations can change. YouTube encoder settings.
If OBS reports that the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lowering it can reduce network drops, though it also reduces video quality. OBS also offers dynamic bitrate, which can lower the bitrate to reduce dropped frames; that is a workaround, not a fix for the underlying connection problem. OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers these options.

Repeat and compare
Repeat the tests when possible. Compare OBS network-drop counts and timestamps, YouTube health messages, and whether the symptom recurs on Wi-Fi and Ethernet. A consistent change when only the connection path changes supports a connection-path explanation. A single clean run, a high peak upload result, or one YouTube warning is not enough to isolate jitter.
Check other causes before blaming jitter
- VPN or security software: If you use a VPN, test without it where safe and appropriate. Security software or other traffic-management tools can affect the connection.
- Network-prioritization utilities: Check whether software intended to prioritize traffic is instead limiting or deprioritizing OBS.
- Drivers and local equipment: Consider network-adapter drivers, router or modem issues, cables, and other network hardware. If practical, test a different cable or port rather than changing several things at once.
- ISP routing or congestion: If drops persist over Ethernet after local checks, record the timestamps and relevant OBS and YouTube messages before contacting your ISP. Some route or congestion problems may be outside your home network. OBS recommends ISP escalation when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the connection issue.
- Encoder configuration: Treat YouTube warnings about bitrate, codec, frame rate, or keyframe frequency as configuration clues, not proof of jitter. Correct those settings separately and retest.
When viewers buffer but OBS shows no network drops
Viewer buffering is not necessarily the same symptom as OBS reporting network-dropped frames. YouTube explains that lower-latency modes leave viewers with less read-ahead buffer, making playback more susceptible to fluctuations between the encoder and player. Congestion can affect the viewing experience even when the connection sustains the average bitrate. If viewers report buffering while OBS shows no network drops, investigate playback and latency separately rather than treating the report as proof of upload jitter. YouTube’s latency guidance describes the buffer trade-off.

Interpret the result conservatively
The evidence supports a local connection-path hypothesis when timestamped network drops and stream-health warnings repeatedly diminish after a controlled change such as moving from Wi-Fi to Ethernet. It does not establish jitter specifically: the OBS and YouTube sources cited here do not give a jitter measurement, a YouTube-specific upload-jitter threshold, or a validated jitter-only test. If you need a numeric jitter reading, these sources do not establish which diagnostic tool or threshold predicts YouTube dropouts.
