Start by checking OBS’s Stats window: network dropped frames point to a connection or ingest-path problem; rendering or encoding lag points to a computer-performance problem. Fix the branch that matches the counter rather than changing bitrate at random. Viewer buffering is a third issue: it can happen even when your own stream is stable.
Check what is failing in OBS first
In OBS Studio, open View > Stats while streaming or running a representative test. Watch the counters for dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag. A counter that keeps rising is more useful than a brief blip; note when it rises and what else is happening in the scene.
| What you see | What it points to | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped frames | The connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says this is typically outside OBS Studio itself. | Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity, then test the network path and ingest server. |
| Rendering or encoding lag; “encoding overloaded” | The computer is struggling to render scenes, encode video, or both. GPU load is a common factor. | Free system/GPU capacity, then reduce output demands or scene complexity. |
| OBS counters remain healthy, but viewers report buffering | Viewer devices, connections, locations, or platform delivery may differ from yours. | Check platform stream health and consider settings more accessible to viewers with slower connections or devices. |
These problems can overlap. For example, a demanding game can cause encoding lag while an unstable Wi-Fi connection causes network drops. Follow each rising counter separately.
How do I fix dropped frames in OBS?
OBS describes network dropped frames as frames it has to discard when the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A large number can disconnect the stream. Work through the network checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.

1. Check bitrate against stable upload capacity
Use the streaming platform’s current bitrate limits and your stable upload capacity—not just the best result from a speed test. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for a stream bitrate, but it is guidance, not a guarantee: upload capacity can fluctuate and other devices or applications may use it. If the OBS network-drop counter rises, reduce the bitrate enough to leave headroom and test again.
Choose settings as a combination: platform limits, upload stability, available encoder/computer headroom, the movement in your content, and the detail and smoothness your audience needs. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate and system resources; lowering them trades some detail or smoothness for reliability and broader accessibility.
2. Test a different ingest server or service
If the bitrate is reasonable for your connection, test another ingest server offered by the platform. For Twitch on Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest as one way to identify a server with a better quality score. You can also test another streaming service: if drops occur only on one service, that suggests a service-specific route issue, but switching tests does not itself repair the route.

3. Replace unstable Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet for a test
If you are on Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired connectivity because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Use equipment you already have if possible; a cable is a troubleshooting step, not a universal fix for ISP congestion, a faulty router, or a bad route to the ingest server.
4. Check software that may interfere with networking
Temporarily test whether a VPN, security product, or bundled network-optimization feature is affecting the connection. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples of software that can interfere. Make changes cautiously: do not leave security protection disabled. Restore appropriate protection after the test.
5. Check drivers and network equipment
- Check for current network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- If connectivity has become unreliable, restart the modem and router, then test again.
- If the problem persists after these checks, contact your ISP. Congestion or routing outside your home may not be something OBS settings can fix.
Do not replace a router or modem simply because OBS reports dropped frames; first establish whether the equipment itself is unreliable.

6. Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. That may help keep a stream connected, but it does not fix the underlying network problem and can reduce video quality. Use it as a fallback after investigating the connection, not as a substitute for a stable bitrate and route.
What does “encoding overloaded” mean?
Encoding overloaded means OBS cannot process the stream at the required rate. Rendering lag means OBS cannot compose and render frames quickly enough. Both can involve GPU or other system limits; neither is fixed by raising upload speed or changing network settings alone.

- Close or reduce GPU-heavy applications that are not needed for the broadcast.
- If streaming a game, cap its frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync so it does not consume all available GPU capacity. Lowering in-game graphics can also help.
- On Windows, OBS says running it as administrator may reserve GPU capacity for OBS in many cases.
Lower the stream’s output demands
If the lag continues, reduce output resolution or frame rate and test again. If 60 fps is not working reliably, try 30 fps. Reducing the base canvas resolution is a more involved change because scene layouts and sources may need adjustment.

Simplify scenes and sources
Temporarily remove or disable expensive filters, overlays, video sources, and browser sources. Use smaller source dimensions where practical. If the counters improve, reintroduce sources one at a time to identify the load. A hardware encoder, new computer, or single setting is not a guaranteed fix: the bottleneck may be elsewhere in the system or scene.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is my stream buffering for viewers?
Viewer buffering does not necessarily mean your broadcast is dropping frames. Viewers have different devices, internet connections, and locations; OBS’s viewer-buffering guidance notes that playback can stall even when the broadcaster has no dropped frames. If your OBS counters are healthy, check the platform’s stream-health information rather than assuming your PC or home connection is the cause.
Lowering bitrate, resolution, or frame rate can make playback more accessible, particularly where viewers have slower connections or the platform does not provide transcoding for different playback qualities. The trade-off is less visual detail or motion smoothness. Consider the content: fast gameplay may benefit more from frame rate, while a relatively static scene may remain clear at a lower setting. Test with representative movement and audio before changing settings for an actual event.

What bitrate and encoder settings should I use?
There is no universal bitrate that prevents drops on every platform or connection. First obey the destination platform’s current encoder requirements; then select a setting your connection and computer can sustain consistently. YouTube’s encoder help page currently displays the following recommended bitrates. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not Twitch or cross-platform prescriptions; the retrieved page does not show a publication date, so check YouTube’s current instructions before a broadcast.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube displayed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube’s displayed guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingestion options subject to its stated constraints. Confirm codec availability and current requirements for your account and encoder before relying on them. Twitch’s broadcasting guidance likewise emphasizes stability over pushing quality settings that risk dropped frames, but consult Twitch’s current instructions for detailed Twitch settings.
Test the full setup before going live
- Check the target platform’s current requirements. Verify its supported codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval for the stream type you plan to run.
- Use a representative scene. Include the game or video with its typical motion, overlays, browser or video sources, and the audio you will use. A quiet desktop test may not reveal load from a real broadcast.
- Test upload stability and OBS counters. Run a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test using the platform’s available options. Watch OBS Stats for network drops, rendering lag, and encoding lag.
- Check platform stream health. Review the destination platform’s status indicators during the test and broadcast. A healthy OBS connection is useful, but does not replace platform-side monitoring.
- Make one change, then retest. Lower bitrate for network drops; reduce competing GPU work or output demands for performance lag. Changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube continuously, you do not have to leave a home computer or OBS running. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
