What “timestamping” a Google Drive video can mean
Google Drive offers three related ways to identify a moment in a video. A time-specific link is best when you want someone to begin playback at a particular point. A timestamped comment is better for collaboration because it attaches written feedback to that exact moment and leaves a navigable marker for other reviewers. A transcript search is the fastest route when you remember a spoken word or phrase but do not know its timecode.

These are Drive features rather than separate physical products. The native workflows run through Drive’s web video player. An optional Chrome Web Store extension named Video Timestamps for Google Drive — Comments & Review exists, but it is not required for either native method.
Copy a link that starts at a specific time
Use this method when the recipient only needs to watch from a chosen point. The link changes the starting position; it does not add an explanation or create a review thread.

- Open Google Drive in a desktop or mobile browser and open the video file.
- Wait for the video player to load, then play the video or drag the playhead to the required moment.
- At the upper-right of the player, open the dropdown beside Share.
- Select Copy link to this time.
- Paste the copied link into your message, document, or task. The people using it must already have permission to watch the Drive file.
When a viewer opens the link, Drive uses the saved position as the playback starting point. It is therefore useful for directing someone to a boss fight, a cutscene, a bug reproduction, a tutorial step, or any other precise section without asking them to scrub manually.
What the time link does not do
- It does not change the file’s sharing permissions.
- It does not make a private video public.
- It does not attach a comment, assignment, or explanation to the position.
- It does not guarantee that playback will begin if the recipient cannot access the original file.
If a colleague reports that the link opens an access-denied page, fix the file’s normal Drive sharing settings first. A time-specific URL is still governed by the underlying file permission.
Add a comment anchored to an exact moment
Timestamped comments are the collaboration option. They preserve the reviewer’s words alongside the video and let anyone with access jump back to the moment being discussed.
- Open the video in Google Drive on the web.
- Play the video or drag the slider until the playhead reaches the moment you want to discuss.
- Click Add comment in the video player.
- Type the feedback, question, or correction.
- Post the comment.
After posting, Drive displays the comment as an indicator on the video timeline. Selecting that indicator jumps playback to its associated point and highlights the comment. This makes a sequence of review notes function like an index of the video rather than a list of file-level messages that reviewers must locate by hand.
Examples of useful timestamped notes
- Gameplay review: “At this encounter, the enemy animation begins before the hitbox appears.”
- Capture-quality check: “The audio drops out briefly here; please verify the source recording.”
- Walkthrough editing: “Add the control explanation immediately before this movement sequence.”
- Cutscene or trailer review: “Replace this shot with the approved version.”
Keep each note tied to one observable moment. If a comment covers several separate issues, create separate comments so each timeline marker has a clear purpose.

Search a caption transcript instead of scrubbing
If the video has captions, Drive can expose a transcript in a sidebar. The transcript follows the spoken content, highlights the text currently being played, and lets you search for words. Selecting a matching result takes you directly to the corresponding part of the video.
- Open the captioned video in Drive on the web.
- Open the transcript sidebar from the video player’s transcript control.
- Search for a distinctive spoken word or phrase.
- Select the matching transcript result to jump to that moment.
This approach is different from dragging the playhead: it finds a spoken term rather than an approximate visual time. It is especially useful for long gameplay commentary, recorded presentations, interviews, or tutorials in which you remember what was said but not where it occurred.

Transcript navigation depends on captions being available for that video. A file without captions cannot provide searchable spoken text through this feature, so use a time link or position the playhead manually instead.
Which method should you use?

A link is a handoff; a comment is a review artifact; a transcript is a content-search tool. You can use all three on the same file, but they solve different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Availability on web, desktop, and mobile
Google documents timestamped comments for Drive on the web. Creation of these comments is performed in the web player. The August 3, 2026 Google Workspace announcement says the feature is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and people using personal Google accounts.

Phones and tablets are described as viewing surfaces for the resulting comments. On iOS and Android, timestamped entries appear formatted as standard file-level comments rather than offering the same web-based creation workflow. If you need to place a new marker, use Drive on the web.

The time-link workflow is also documented for Drive on the web. If the mobile Drive app does not show the relevant control, open the file in a browser and use the web player. The account’s normal permission rules still apply on every device.
Requirements before you begin
- A video stored in Google Drive: You need access to the actual file, not merely a message that mentions it.
- Permission to watch: A copied time link works for people who already have permission to view the video.
- A supported web playback session: Drive states that playing videos requires third-party cookies to be enabled in the browser.
- Captions for transcript search: Searching spoken words is available only when the video has captions.
- A reliable connection: Playback quality depends on internet speed.
There is no special camera, editing application, plug-in, or physical product requirement for the native features. The optional browser extension is separate from Drive’s built-in controls.
Permissions and sharing considerations
A timestamp does not bypass access control. The recipient must be able to open the underlying Drive file, and the time-specific link does not grant that access on its own. Before sending it outside your immediate team, check the file’s sharing panel and decide whether the audience should be limited to named people, an organization, or another permission scope that your account allows.
Use a timestamped comment when the audience already collaborates on the file and needs an auditable discussion. Use a time link when the audience only needs a starting point and you do not want to add a permanent note to the file. This distinction prevents a simple viewing instruction from becoming an unnecessary review thread.

Playback limits and quality
Google Drive documents a maximum playback resolution of 1920 × 1080. That is the documented ceiling for Drive playback, not a promise that every uploaded file will play at that resolution. The actual quality depends on the source file and on internet speed, so a viewer may see a lower stream when bandwidth is limited.
Resolution does not alter timestamp behavior: the link and comment still identify a position in the video timeline. If the picture appears soft or playback repeatedly pauses, first check the connection and browser playback conditions before assuming that the timestamp is wrong.

The “Copy link to this time” option is not visible
- Confirm that you opened the video in Drive’s web player rather than a file preview that has not finished loading.
- Move the playhead to a definite position; the control is associated with the active playback moment.
- Open the dropdown beside Share, not the general file-sharing dialog elsewhere in Drive.
- If you are on a phone or tablet, switch to the web workflow, because the documented creation surface is the web player.
Playback will not start
Drive states that video playback requires third-party cookies to be enabled. Review the browser’s cookie settings, allow the required cookies for Drive, reload the file, and try again. A slow connection can also prevent smooth playback; wait for buffering or test on a faster network.
The recipient cannot open the link
Verify that the recipient has permission to view the original file. Copying a link to a time does not alter sharing settings. If the file is restricted, add the person or group through Drive’s normal sharing controls, then send the time link again.

Check whether the comment was created in the web video player at a selected playhead position. Mobile users can view timestamped entries as standard file-level comments, but creation is documented for the web. Reopen the video on the web, move the playhead, and use Add comment there.

Transcript search returns nothing
Transcript navigation requires captions. If captions are absent, there is no searchable transcript sidebar for the video. Use manual positioning for a visual moment or create a timestamped comment once you locate it.
The video looks lower quality than expected
Drive’s documented maximum is 1920 × 1080, and playback quality varies with internet speed. Confirm the source file’s resolution and connection conditions. A timestamp identifies where playback begins; it does not increase the video’s resolution or bandwidth.
A practical review workflow for game footage
For a game capture, walkthrough, speedrun, or trailer review, start by deciding whether the next person needs context or only navigation. If the instruction is “watch the boss pattern from the first attack,” move to that frame and copy a time link. If the instruction is “the damage indicator is incorrect here,” create a timestamped comment so the issue remains attached to the footage. If you remember that a commentator says “parry window” but not the time, search the transcript when captions are present.
For a team review, work in this order:
- Open the video on the web and confirm that it plays.
- Use transcript search for known spoken terms, when captions exist.
- For visual-only moments, position the playhead manually.
- Create one timestamped comment per issue that needs discussion.
- Use a time-specific link in chat or a task when a teammate only needs a starting point.
- Ask recipients to open the marker or link from an account that has file access.
This separates discovery, discussion, and distribution. Review comments stay with the file, while lightweight links can be sent wherever the team coordinates work.
Native Drive features versus an optional extension
Drive’s built-in time links, comments, and caption transcript are sufficient for the workflows described here. A Chrome Web Store listing exists for Video Timestamps for Google Drive — Comments & Review, but installing it is optional. Consider third-party software only if you need capabilities that the native player does not provide, and review its permissions and maintenance separately from Google Drive.
For most viewers, avoiding an extension reduces setup and keeps access, comments, and playback inside the same Drive file. The native path is the one documented for Workspace, Workspace Individual, and personal accounts.
