How to Track a Streaming Service’s Ownership and Content Library

A title leaving a streaming catalog is not proof of an ownership change. Track availability and corporate status separately, using country-specific checks and dated primary sources.

Track a streaming service’s catalog and its ownership separately: use the service’s own notices and a country-specific availability guide for titles, and dated company announcements or filings for corporate changes. A show disappearing is usually a rights or licensing question—not proof that the service changed owners. Likewise, an announced acquisition does not establish that it closed or that titles moved to a new service on the same date.

Why a title can leave without the service changing owners

Streaming catalogs depend in part on licensing agreements. Netflix says titles can leave when agreements expire; its stated considerations include whether rights remain available, regional popularity, and license cost. That explains Netflix’s stated process, not the reason for every removal on every service. See Netflix’s explanation of why titles leave.

Ownership, corporate structure, studio assets, and individual streaming rights are separate things to track. A company may announce a proposed acquisition or separation without establishing that the transaction has closed, when each asset will transfer, or where a particular title will stream.

How to check whether a title is leaving or available

Check the streaming service first

For Netflix, open the title’s details page and look for “Last day to watch on Netflix.” Netflix says it displays this notice when a title is due to leave within the next month, including briefly at the start of playback. Its help page asks users to select a country, so note the country and date when checking. Other services may use different notices. See Netflix’s instructions for finding out whether a title is leaving.

Use an availability guide as a cross-check

JustWatch describes its guide as listing legal subscription, ad-supported, rental, and purchase offers, with filters for services a viewer uses. Its terms describe optional watchlist notifications for availability changes, but also warn that availability can change and is not guaranteed. Treat a guide as a way to discover and monitor options, then confirm a high-priority title with the service itself. See JustWatch’s terms.

How to track ownership and corporate changes

  1. Identify what changed. Keep separate notes for the streaming brand, its parent or controlling company, studios or rights owners, and individual titles in specific territories. A change to one is not automatically a change to the others.
  2. Find a primary company source. Check investor-relations announcements and securities filings for the companies involved. Record the announcement date, parties, assets in scope, conditions, anticipated milestones, and the transaction’s stated status.
  3. Preserve the status language. Distinguish an announced or proposed deal from one that is pending, approved, or confirmed complete. Update your notes when a later primary source confirms a status change; do not turn an expected date into a completed event.
  4. Check title rights separately. Even a completed corporate transaction does not, by itself, establish the service or territory where each title will stream. Look for a relevant rights announcement or verify the title in the service catalog.

Example: Netflix’s announced Warner Bros. acquisition

On December 5, 2025, Netflix announced a definitive agreement to acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max, and HBO. Netflix’s announcement put the transaction’s total enterprise value at approximately $82.7 billion and its equity value at $72.0 billion. It said closing was expected after the planned separation of WBD’s Global Networks division into Discovery Global, then expected in Q3 2026, and was subject to approvals and other conditions. Those figures and timing describe the announcement on that date, not proof of a later closing or current status. Check the Netflix announcement for its terms and consult newer company records for subsequent developments.

In a July 28, 2025 announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery described a planned Warner Bros. company encompassing Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros. Gaming Studios, and film and television libraries. It described Discovery Global as including Discovery+, CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., and Bleacher Report. These were the planned groupings stated at that time; see WBD’s announcement and verify later developments before describing them as the present structure.

Neither announcement establishes the later, territory-by-territory streaming status or effective date for every title. Check the relevant service and rights information for a specific film or show.

What to include when reporting a change

  • For availability: title, country, access type (subscription, ad-supported, rental, or purchase), source, and date checked.
  • For a company event: the announcing company, announcement date, parties and assets involved, conditions, expected milestones, and whether the event is announced, pending, or confirmed complete.
  • For both: make clear whether the claim concerns a title’s availability, a license, a studio or library asset, or control of the service. Those are different kinds of change.

For example, describe a catalog result as “available in [country] on [date checked]” rather than as a timeless or worldwide listing. When referring to a transaction, use the announcement’s date and status—for instance, “Netflix said on December 5, 2025 that closing was expected after the planned separation, then expected in Q3 2026, subject to approvals and other conditions.” Check the newest primary company or regulatory record before presenting a current status.
