Keep one clearly labeled record for each Shiny hunt, then update it whenever you pause, end a session, or switch targets. Record the Pokémon, game, hunting method, and count; add time and the date if you want to measure effort or preserve a useful history. The key is consistency: a number only helps if you know what it counts and which hunt it belongs to.
What to record for each hunt
Create a separate entry for every target rather than carrying one unexplained counter from hunt to hunt. A compact record can include:
- Target: the Pokémon you are hunting.
- Game: the title you are playing.
- Method: for example, encounters, resets, or eggs.
- Count: the total using the same counting rule throughout that hunt.
- Date and time: useful for session history; distinguish active hunting time from time elapsed while away.
Track one repeatable action at a time. If your counter is for completed resets, do not later treat it as a count of Pokémon seen. Session duration is a separate measure: pause a timer when you leave if you want active play time, or label it elapsed time if you leave it running.
A checkpoint routine for long sessions
- Start a new hunt record. Enter the target, game, method, and starting count. Note relevant settings if they affect what you count.
- Choose a counting rule. Decide what earns one increment, such as one completed reset or one encounter, and keep that rule for the hunt.
- Update at natural breaks. Record the current total when you pause, stop for the day, or change targets. If you use a separate physical counter, reconcile it with your written or app record then.
- Separate new hunts. When you switch Pokémon or games, create a new entry instead of reusing a bare number.
- Keep a backup if the history matters. Save a note or export when the tracker provides a way to do so. Export and backup behavior is not established for every service, so do not assume an app will preserve or recover a hunt record.
Choose a tracker that fits your setup
Trackers differ in platform, timers, multi-hunt support, and whether counting is manual or automatic. Feature details below reflect the linked product pages; they are not independent reliability tests.

| Option | Documented features | Consider before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| ShinyDex | Tracks counts and time, and its catch records include game, method, encounter count, and date. The site identifies automatic desktop counting as a Pro feature. | Automatic counting is tied to its desktop app and Pro tier. Check whether manual tracking or the desktop setup suits your play. |
| PokeShine for Android | The Google Play developer listing describes tracking Pokémon seen and search time, multi-hunt route sprites, and found Pokémon. The listing reports an update on April 25, 2026. | Confirm that its fields and any odds display fit your game and method. The feature description is developer-provided; an individual review reporting lost hunts is anecdotal, not a measure of failure frequency. |
| Shiny Pokes website and iPhone | Documents an encounter counter, timers, simultaneous hunts, phases or chains, and autosave and pause behavior when stepping away. Its page specifies iOS 17 or newer for iPhone. | Check the platform and privacy or public-profile options that fit you. Autosave is a vendor claim, not an independently verified reliability result. |
| ShinyHunt / Poketch | Poketch describes ShinyHunt as tracking hunt time, encounters, collection, and Pokédex completion. It distinguishes this from its older PokétchApp, which is no longer being updated. | Check current device support, account continuity, and which features are available for your setup; the product pages do not establish comparative reliability. |
| Handheld tally counter plus a note | A recent community search excerpt mentions pairing a physical counter with overall progress in an app or website. | A tally counter is quick to click, but by itself it does not attach the count to a target, game, method, or session. Copy the number into a labeled record at breaks. |
| Pokémon HOME Catch Calendar | The official feature page describes a mobile Catch Calendar organized by catch date and a Pokédex for deposited Pokémon. | It can help organize caught Pokémon, but the feature page does not describe a live encounter counter for an active hunt. Feature availability may vary. |
How to interpret a counter or odds display
An encounter total is a record of what you have done, not a deadline for when a Shiny must appear. Odds depend on the game, method, and applicable modifiers; the product information above is not enough to establish a current numeric odds table across those combinations. Treat a tracker’s probability display as conditional information, not a guarantee or a threshold that promises a result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why keep a separate collection timeline?
A hunt log answers, “How far have I gone on this target?” A collection timeline answers, “When did I catch or deposit this Pokémon?” Pokémon HOME’s Catch Calendar and Pokédex are documented for organizing catches and deposited Pokémon, not for counting ongoing encounters, so they can complement a hunt tracker but do not replace one.
