How to Track Real-Time Flight Paths on a Map

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To track a flight, open a live aviation map such as Flightradar24, FlightAware, or ADS-B Exchange, then search by the flight number, aircraft registration, or a nearby location. Select the aircraft marker to see its reported position, altitude, speed, route and available schedule details. For an airline journey, the flight number is usually the fastest starting point; for planes overhead, pan and zoom the map around your location.

Every marker represents the service’s latest received or processed report, not a guaranteed second-by-second view. Delays, gaps and missing aircraft are normal consequences of receiver coverage, aircraft equipment, processing and privacy choices.

Track a flight in a few steps

  1. Choose a map. Open a browser or mobile app from Flightradar24, FlightAware or ADS-B Exchange. A phone or computer is sufficient; dedicated hardware is not required.
  2. Search using the strongest identifier. Enter the airline flight number, including its airline code, when following a scheduled passenger flight. If you know the aircraft registration, search that instead. When you do not know either, use the map’s location view and look for aircraft near an airport, route or town.
  3. Pick the correct result. Flight numbers can be reused on different dates, and several aircraft may be nearby. Match the departure and arrival airports, scheduled date and aircraft type shown in the result.
  4. Open the aircraft card. Tap or click the marker to display the reported callsign or flight number, altitude, ground speed, heading, origin, destination and the portion of the route already received. The exact fields differ by service and region.
  5. Read the timestamp and status. Look for “last seen,” update time, estimated arrival and any “scheduled,” “en route,” “landed” or similar label. Treat the timestamp as the age of the service’s latest usable data, not proof that the aircraft is currently at that exact point.
  6. Refresh when the aircraft is important. Refresh the page or reopen the aircraft card if the marker stops moving. A map refresh can occur before a new position is available, so a newly drawn screen does not necessarily mean a newly measured position.

If the map cannot find the flight, try the registration, the airport pair, a neighboring tracker and a direct airline or airport status page. A missing marker does not by itself mean the flight was cancelled or diverted.

Which live map should you use?

No public tracker is a universal window into every aircraft. Networks differ in receiver locations, satellite access, radar feeds, processing rules and the amount of schedule information they display. Use the service that best matches your question, and compare a second map when a position or route appears doubtful.

Service What its provider describes Best use Important timing or coverage qualification
Flightradar24 A combined map using its global ADS-B receiver network, multilateration (MLAT), satellite ADS-B, radar in some regions including North America and Australia, and additional data to enrich aircraft details. Following an airline flight with schedule and aircraft context, while also viewing nearby traffic. The mix of sources varies by region. A marker is still dependent on coverage and processing; no universal end-to-end delay is promised.
FlightAware An aggregation of government, airline, commercial-provider and receiver-network information. Checking a flight’s operational context and comparing reported times with the map. FlightAware says website data is typically delayed 30 seconds from real time and that a map position may lag by 1–2 minutes.
ADS-B Exchange A live and mobile map built from reports supplied by its global feeder network. Watching receiver-network traffic around a location and examining aircraft reports on the map. The provider says data can refresh as often as every 250 milliseconds. That is a feed-refresh statement, not a promise that every aircraft position is only 250 milliseconds old; coverage and upstream report age still apply.

These descriptions come from the services themselves, not from an independent feature test. Plans, regional availability and displayed fields can change. Compare the geographic coverage, source mix, reported delay, route detail and schedule context that matter to you rather than declaring one map universally best.

How a flight path reaches your screen

ADS-B Out broadcasts the aircraft’s position

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says ADS-B Out broadcasts an aircraft’s GPS location, altitude, ground speed and other information to ground stations and other aircraft. The FAA describes the technology this way: “Real-time precision, shared situational awareness, advanced applications for pilots and controllers alike – these are the hallmarks of ADS-B NextGen surveillance.”

Receivers on the ground hear those broadcasts and forward them to tracking networks. A service then validates, time-orders and displays the reports as points along a path. Because the aircraft transmits repeatedly rather than sending one permanent line, the visible route is reconstructed from successive reports.

MLAT estimates a position from timing

Some transponder signals do not include a directly usable position. Multilateration, or MLAT, can estimate the location by comparing the time a signal reaches several receivers. FlightAware says its MLAT solution needs an aircraft to be within line of sight of four or more receivers. If fewer receivers can hear the transmission, the service may show an altitude or identity without a calculated position, or no MLAT position at all.

Other feeds fill gaps and add context

Provider maps may combine terrestrial ADS-B with satellite ADS-B, radar, government data, airline data, flight plans and commercial feeds. Flightradar24 lists its receiver network, MLAT, satellite ADS-B, radar in some regions and other data sources. FlightAware describes its information as an aggregation of government, airline, commercial-provider and receiver-network data. The exact blend is different by service and location, so two maps can show different positions, callsigns, route lines or estimated times for the same aircraft.

What the path, marker and numbers mean

The marker is a latest-known position

The aircraft icon is the newest position that the service has received, processed and decided to display. It can be behind the aircraft’s true location when reports are delayed or coverage is intermittent. A smooth line between points is a visualization; it does not prove that the aircraft flew every pixel of that line or that the path updated continuously.

Altitude is not height above your street

Trackers normally show pressure altitude or an equivalent aviation altitude reference. It is useful for comparing aircraft on the same map, but it is not a precise measurement of height above your home. Terrain elevation, barometric settings and the service’s data source affect how the value should be interpreted.

Ground speed and heading are reported values

Ground speed describes motion over the Earth, not the airspeed shown to a pilot. A strong headwind can make an aircraft’s ground speed lower than its airspeed. Heading can differ from the direction of the drawn route during turns, holding patterns or weather avoidance.

Route lines can be planned, estimated or historical

A line from origin to destination may represent a filed or estimated route, while the breadcrumb trail behind the marker represents received positions. Some services continue showing a planned route when live points are temporarily unavailable. Check the aircraft card’s status and timestamps before interpreting a straight line as the exact flown track.

Why a map can lag behind the aircraft

Service processing adds time

Receivers must receive a signal, forward it, match it to an aircraft, filter duplicates and render it on a website or app. FlightAware explicitly reports that its website data is typically 30 seconds delayed from real time and that an aircraft’s map position may lag by 1–2 minutes. Other services may have different delays, and the delay can vary during congestion or a source outage.

Refresh frequency is not position age

ADS-B Exchange says its map can refresh as often as every 250 milliseconds. That figure describes how frequently the interface can refresh when data is available. It does not mean every aircraft report is 250 milliseconds old: the aircraft may have transmitted earlier, the feeder may have forwarded it later, or the network may be waiting for the next usable report.

Coverage is uneven

Terrestrial receivers work best when the aircraft and antenna have a clear radio line of sight. Mountains, buildings, curvature of the Earth, storms and sparse receiver placement can create gaps. Over oceans and remote areas, satellite or radar sources may extend coverage, but those feeds are not identical across providers.

The aircraft may not be transmitting a usable position

An aircraft can be equipped with a transponder that is not broadcasting a directly usable position, can be outside a service’s receiver network, or can be represented only by schedule data. Military, government and privacy-sensitive operations may be limited or absent. A broken line therefore does not establish that the aircraft suddenly changed course.

Why a plane is not showing on the tracker

  • It has not departed. A scheduled flight can appear as a timetable entry before a live transponder report exists.
  • The identifier is wrong. Try the airline code plus flight number, then the aircraft registration. Codeshares can use different flight numbers for the same physical aircraft.
  • The aircraft is outside coverage. Check again near a major airport or compare another service whose receiver or satellite coverage may differ.
  • MLAT cannot calculate it. FlightAware’s four-receiver line-of-sight requirement illustrates why an aircraft can be heard but not positioned.
  • The report is delayed or stale. Open the aircraft details and inspect the last-update time rather than relying only on the icon’s apparent location.
  • The service limits the display. Some aircraft or data sources may be filtered, anonymized or unavailable under local and provider rules.
  • The flight number changed in operation. Irregular operations, ferry flights and aircraft substitutions can produce a different callsign or registration.

To troubleshoot, search the registration, check the departure airport’s departures board, compare a second map and inspect the timestamp. Do not infer cancellation, diversion or an emergency from one absent marker.

How to see planes flying over your location

  1. Center the map on your town, airport or neighborhood and zoom out far enough to include nearby arrival and departure routes.
  2. Allow location access only if you want the app to center itself; manual map navigation works without sharing precise location.
  3. Select each nearby marker and note its altitude, heading, callsign and destination. A low altitude and changing heading near an airport usually indicate an arrival or departure, while a steady high-altitude track often indicates an overflight.
  4. Watch several updates before judging direction. One stale point can make a plane appear stationary or place it behind its actual position.
  5. Use the path history to distinguish crossing traffic from an aircraft circling, holding or making repeated approaches.

Receiver coverage determines what you can see. A quiet map over a rural area does not prove that no aircraft are overhead; it may indicate that the nearest network cannot hear or position them.

How to check “Where is my flight right now?”

Start with the flight number and scheduled date, then verify the origin and destination shown in the aircraft card. Compare the tracker’s estimated times with the airline or airport’s operational status because a map can show a moving aircraft while schedule data is still being updated.

For a passenger waiting at an airport, the arrival board and airline notifications remain the authoritative sources for gate, baggage and cancellation information. The map is most useful for answering whether the aircraft appears airborne, which broad route it is following and how its reported progress compares with the estimate.

Privacy, blocked aircraft and what tracking does not reveal

A public map can show an aircraft report; it does not reveal who is on board, the purpose of a flight or every operational detail. Visibility depends on broadcasts, receiver coverage, provider processing and applicable restrictions.

The FAA recognizes that real-time aircraft position and identification can create privacy concerns. Its Privacy ICAO Address (PIA) program is available only to eligible U.S.-registered aircraft that meet stated equipment, call-sign and airspace conditions. PIA is a limited FAA program, not a universal way to hide an aircraft from every tracking network. A provider may still receive other reports or display an aircraft in a different form.

Optional project: receive ADS-B yourself

Most readers should simply use a browser or phone. Aviation hobbyists can add a USB ADS-B receiver and antenna, connect it to a compatible computer and contribute reports to a feeder network. FlightAware describes its free PiAware and FlightFeeder terrestrial receiver network as examples of this approach.

Hardware performance depends on antenna placement, cable loss, local radio interference, computer support and line of sight. No single current receiver model or compatibility combination is established here, so check the selected feeder software’s requirements before buying anything. Place an outdoor antenna safely, follow local radio regulations and avoid treating your personal receiver as a complete substitute for national surveillance coverage.

A practical way to compare two maps

  1. Search the same flight number or registration on both services within the same minute.
  2. Compare each marker’s last-update time, altitude, heading and reported source if shown.
  3. Check whether one service is showing a planned route while the other is drawing received breadcrumbs.
  4. Look for a consistent difference over several updates rather than judging one screen refresh.
  5. If the aircraft disappears on one map, test whether it remains visible on the other and whether both show a coverage or timestamp warning.

A disagreement is usually evidence of different feeds or timing, not proof that one service is wrong. When a decision matters, use the airline, airport or aviation authority for operational information and use the map as situational context.

Limits worth remembering

  • “Real time” is a product description, not a guarantee that every point is current to the second.
  • Every map covers only the aircraft and data sources available to its network.
  • ADS-B is a major source, but maps may also use MLAT, satellite, radar, schedules, flight plans and other feeds.
  • MLAT needs multiple receivers; FlightAware specifies four or more in line of sight for its MLAT positioning.
  • A refresh rate measures interface or feed updating, not necessarily the age of each position.
  • A missing aircraft or broken path can reflect coverage, equipment, processing or privacy limits rather than a route change.
  • An ADS-B receiver is optional; a phone or browser is enough for ordinary flight checking.
