The original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and its online GTS service ended on May 20, 2014, so local wireless is the documented official route for a nearby trade.
What you need
- Two Nintendo DS-family systems, one for each player.
- One compatible Generation IV game card per system. Nintendo lists HeartGold, SoulSilver, Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, and Pokémon Platinum as compatible games for this communication setup.
- Both players together, within range for local DS Wireless Communications.
You do not need a cable, separate wireless adapter, or Pokéwalker for a Union Room trade. Nintendo’s HeartGold instruction booklet describes this local trading procedure.
How to trade in the Union Room
- On both systems, start the game and use local DS Wireless Communications. For a nearby trade, do not choose an old online Wi-Fi option.
- In each game, enter a Pokémon Center and go to the counter on the second floor to enter the Union Room.
- Once both players are in the room, face the other player and press A to interact.
- Select Trade, choose the Pokémon you want to offer, and select TRADE.
- Review the Pokémon your partner offers. Confirm with YES only if the exchange is what you both intend.
The exchange completes after both players confirm. A Pokémon that evolves by trading evolves as part of the exchange. Pokémon wearing Ball Capsules cannot be traded; remove the Ball Capsule before offering one.
Can HeartGold and SoulSilver trade with other Generation IV games?
Yes. The same local setup supports trades between HeartGold or SoulSilver and Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, as well as trades between the two Johto games. Each player still needs their own system and a compatible game card.

Can you trade online now?
No—not through Nintendo’s original online service. Nintendo discontinued Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on May 20, 2014, including online play and user exchanges of in-game characters through the Global Trade Station. Nintendo says the shutdown did not affect offline play, so local wireless trading remains the documented official option for nearby players. See Nintendo’s service discontinuation notice.
Nintendo’s historical HeartGold and SoulSilver communications page describes the former Global Terminal GTS, which let players trade with people around the world. That description is historical and does not mean the official online service still works. No current official online alternative for these DS games is established here.
