The right transfer method depends on what “version” means: a different Java release, another Bedrock device, a move between Java and Bedrock, or the legacy Nintendo Switch Edition. Identify the world’s current edition and platform and the destination before changing or copying anything. For Bedrock device-to-device transfers, Minecraft documents a Realms upload-and-download method; Java release selection happens in the Launcher; Java-to-Bedrock conversion is a separate problem because the editions use different world formats.
First, identify what you are transferring
Minecraft Java Edition runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock Edition is available across Windows, consoles, and mobile. Those edition names matter more than the word “version”: moving a world to another Java release is not the same as moving it to another device or converting it between editions. See Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock edition guide for the platform distinction.

- Same edition, different Java release: choose a release in the Launcher, and protect the world before trying snapshots.
- Bedrock world, different device: use the documented Realms upload/download workflow.
- Java and Bedrock editions: treat this as conversion, not a plain folder copy.
- Legacy Nintendo Switch Edition to Bedrock on Switch: use the specific in-game Sync Old Worlds option if the old world is discovered.
If you are unsure which case applies, check the edition and platform that currently hold the save, then the edition and platform you want to use it on. There is no single transfer procedure for all four cases.
Choose the workflow that matches your source and destination
| Situation | Documented approach | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock to another Bedrock device | Upload the world to a Realm on the source device, then download it on the destination device. | Requires current Minecraft versions on both devices and an active Realms trial or paid subscription. |
| One Java release to another | Select the release through the Launcher’s Installations tab. | This selects a Java release; it does not convert Java to Bedrock. Minecraft warns that snapshots can corrupt worlds, and the reviewed official guidance does not establish a generally safe downgrade process. |
| Java to Bedrock, or Bedrock to Java | Use an edition-aware conversion approach only after checking what it supports. | The official sources establish format and gameplay differences but do not validate a particular third-party converter or its preservation guarantees. |
| Legacy Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition to current Bedrock Minecraft on Switch | In Bedrock Minecraft, choose Sync Old Worlds and select a discovered legacy save. | This applies to the specific legacy Switch edition, not console transfers generally. |
Move a Bedrock world to another device with Realms
Minecraft’s documented cross-device method is to upload the world from the source device to a Realm and download it on the destination. Signing in to a Microsoft account by itself should not be treated as syncing every local world. The transfer instructions require the current Minecraft version on both devices and an active Realms trial or paid subscription. Follow the official Realms world-transfer instructions for the device-specific controls.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- On the source device: sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the transfer, open the world-management options, and upload the world to a Realm slot.
- On the destination device: sign in with that Microsoft account, open the Realm, and download the world.
- Check the destination Worlds list: Minecraft says the downloaded world appears there as a copy.
Uploading and downloading are distinct steps; do not assume the local save has moved simply because the Realm is visible. Keep the original save until you have confirmed that the downloaded copy opens as expected.
Use a different Java release carefully
To select a Java release, use the Minecraft Launcher’s Installations tab and choose the release you intend to launch. That changes the game version you run; it is not an edition conversion or a guarantee that a world saved by a newer release will work safely in an older one.

Before opening a world in a snapshot
Minecraft guide author Cristina Anderca warns: “They can also corrupt your world, so you should always, ALWAYS back up your worlds before you try them.” The warning appears in the Java and Bedrock editions guide. Back up the world before opening it in a snapshot, and test with a copy rather than risking the only save.
Do not assume a downgrade is safe
The official guidance reviewed here explains how to select Java releases and cautions about snapshots, but it does not provide a general safe procedure for downgrading a world. If you need to return to an older release, preserve an untouched backup and do not overwrite it with a save from the newer release. Compatibility can depend on the releases involved; the available guidance does not establish that a newer world will load correctly or retain all its data in an older release.

Understand the limits of Java–Bedrock conversion
A Java save is not simply a Bedrock save in a different folder. Microsoft Learn states, “A major difference between Java and Bedrock is the world format.” Its documentation identifies Anvil storage for Java and LevelDB for Bedrock, alongside differences in blocks, commands, and mechanics. Those differences explain why a cross-edition move is a conversion task rather than a direct file transfer. See Microsoft Learn’s Java and Bedrock differences documentation.
The official sources cited here do not endorse a specific third-party converter or establish that any converter preserves every part of a world. Before using one, check its current support for both editions and the data you care about. In particular, do not assume that blocks, entities, inventories, commands, mods, add-ons, or redstone behavior will all carry over unchanged. Keep the original save untouched and inspect the converted result before relying on it.

Convert a legacy Switch Edition world to Bedrock on Switch
Minecraft’s instructions apply specifically to transferring worlds from Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition into current Bedrock Minecraft on Switch. In Bedrock, go to the bottom of the Worlds list and choose Sync Old Worlds. Select a discovered legacy world and let the game convert it. The converted world then appears with the other Bedrock worlds. The official instructions were published in April 2019; they are not a general recipe for moving saves among modern consoles. See Minecraft’s Switch world-transfer instructions.
The conversion changes the world to infinite world type: the existing portions are preserved, and new chunks generate outside them. That describes the documented legacy Switch conversion, not every Switch save or a transfer between unrelated platforms.

Back up the right save for your platform
Do not rely on one universal backup instruction. Minecraft lists separate backup and restore topics for Java, Bedrock, Android, Apple devices, Windows, Realms, and consoles. Use the procedure for the platform and edition holding the original world; the Minecraft Backup & Restore help section is an index of those distinct topics, not one cross-platform procedure.
Quick Recap
- Keep an untouched copy of the source before changing releases or converting editions.
- For a device transfer, verify the downloaded world opens before deleting or replacing the source.
- For a conversion, inspect the result in-game before treating it as a complete replacement.
