For a first-time player, choose the Complete Edition—or the current Remastered release offered on your platform. It includes the base game plus both major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. If you already own The Witcher 3, check your platform library and account before paying again: CD PROJEKT RED says owners can receive the expansions and, on qualifying platforms, the Remastered upgrade at no extra cost.
What’s the difference between the original game and the Complete Edition?
The core adventure is the same: Geralt searches for Ciri across an open world. The key difference is what comes with the game. A base-game copy gives you the main adventure; the Complete Edition packages that game with both major expansions.

The publisher describes the base game as offering “over 100 hours of gameplay in an open world.” That is promotional guidance rather than a playtime promise; how long the game takes depends on how much of its optional content you play. CD PROJEKT RED’s Complete Edition description
What does the Remastered release add?
CD PROJEKT RED launched the current Remastered release on September 29, 2026. The publisher lists visual, interface, and gameplay changes rather than a different core story. Its announced features include:

Do you need to buy the Complete Edition if you already own The Witcher 3?
Usually, do not buy it again until you have checked your account’s entitlements. CD PROJEKT RED says base-game owners receive Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine at no extra cost, and that owners on qualifying platforms receive the Remastered upgrade for free. Eligibility varies by platform and generation, so verify the listing in your library or storefront before purchasing.

These entitlements are publisher-stated, but storefront implementation can differ. Check the account and platform you actually use rather than assuming that ownership transfers across stores or console generations.
How do the expansions fit into the game?
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are substantial story expansions, not alternate editions of the main adventure. CD PROJEKT RED says their stories can be started separately from the main menu, so you do not have to replay the base game to access them. If you are new to the series, playing the main adventure before starting either expansion provides the natural context for Geralt’s story.

Will your saves and achievements carry over?
CD PROJEKT RED says existing save files remain compatible and achievements or trophies are unaffected by the storefront changes and updates. The publisher also says previously owned expansions remain in players’ libraries, with their content patched into the base game. If an expansion does not appear as installed, check for the latest game update and the relevant platform entitlement.

If this is your first time
Choose the Complete Edition or current Remastered release available for your platform. You get the base adventure and both expansions together; on platforms with Remastered, you also get the newer features described by the publisher.

If you already own the base game
Check your library before buying. The expansions are stated to be free for base-game owners, and eligible owners can receive the Remastered upgrade without repurchasing. Confirm what your specific account can download, especially if you play on PS4 or Xbox One rather than a listed Remastered platform.
If you already own a Complete Edition or expansion
Keep using the copy you own and check for the latest update. The publisher says existing expansion entitlements remain available and saves, achievements, and trophies are unaffected; a second purchase is not necessary just to access content already attached to your account.
