A save from the free FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE demo on Nintendo Switch 2 can carry into the full game, according to Square Enix. An existing save on a compatible Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 console moves through Nintendo’s nearby-console Transfer Your Save Data tool. A cloud restore is a separate option that requires Nintendo Switch Online. PlayStation, Xbox, and PC save imports into the Switch 2 version have not been confirmed by the official materials available.
Choose the transfer route that matches your save
“Transfer” can mean carrying demo progress into the full release, moving a complete save from one Nintendo console to another, or downloading a backup from Nintendo’s cloud service. Those routes have different requirements and different data-loss risks.

| What you are moving | Official route | What you need | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 demo progress into the full game | Game-level carryover confirmed by Square Enix | The demo and full game on the supported platform | Square Enix confirms carryover but does not publish a button-by-button menu procedure |
| An existing save from one Nintendo console to another | Nintendo Transfer Your Save Data | Both consoles, internet access, nearby placement, and the same Nintendo Account-linked user | The sent save is deleted from the source console; a target overwrite can replace existing data permanently |
| A Nintendo cloud backup | Nintendo Save Data Cloud | Nintendo Switch Online and a game edition that supports cloud backup | Availability must be checked in your region and for your copy of the software |
Square Enix’s official announcement says the free demo is available for both platforms and that players can carry its save data to the full game. The January 23, 2026 FINAL FANTASY PORTAL release announcement repeats that offer. Neither announcement describes an in-game menu sequence, so an online instruction that claims a specific confirmation path should not be treated as an official procedure.
How to identify your situation
If you have only played the Switch 2 demo and have now purchased the full release, you are using a game-level continuation feature, not Nintendo’s system-transfer utility. If the save already exists in the full game on an older Nintendo Switch and you are replacing or adding a Switch 2, you need the nearby-console route. If the old console is unavailable but a backup exists, check Save Data Cloud. These distinctions matter because a demo file, a console save and a cloud backup are not interchangeable actions.

The game must also be present on the target before you can sensibly check progress. Nintendo’s transfer feature moves save data, not a license or a copy of the game itself. Sign in with the user attached to the transferred save when you launch the title.
Before moving a Nintendo console save
- Update the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 before starting.
- Connect both systems to the internet and keep them close enough for Nintendo’s nearby-console process.
- Make sure a user linked to the same Nintendo Account exists on both consoles. Nintendo restricts this transfer to matching-account users.
- Check which system currently contains the newest FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE save.
- If the target already contains a save for the same software, decide whether you are willing to overwrite it. Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered.
Nintendo Switch Online is not needed for the nearby transfer. The requirement is an internet-connected pair of consoles, not an active subscription.
Pre-transfer checklist
Write down which console is the source and which is the target before opening the menus. Confirm the user name and Nintendo Account on both systems rather than relying on similar local profile names. If several users have played on either console, select the profile that actually owns the save. A matching account is a requirement; a matching nickname alone is not.

If it already has progress, decide whether that progress is disposable or whether you should preserve it through another supported backup first. The transfer is designed to move one save, not merge two playthroughs. Nintendo’s warning about unrecoverable overwrites means that choosing the wrong file can permanently replace the target’s progress.
Keep both consoles powered on and nearby throughout the operation. Avoid starting a game, changing users or shutting down either system until the completion message appears. If the transfer fails before completion, verify the setup again instead of assuming that a partial copy exists.
Move a compatible save from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2
Use this procedure when you already have a console save and want to move it to another nearby Nintendo system. Nintendo’s wording applies to compatible software; it does not establish that every edition, region, or cross-version combination is interchangeable.
- Prepare both systems. Install available system updates, connect each console to the internet, and place them near one another.
- Check the user account. On each system, select the user that is linked to the same Nintendo Account. A different local user, even with the same name, does not satisfy Nintendo’s account requirement.
- Open the sending console’s transfer menu. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose the send command. Select Send Save Data to Another Console. When asked, select the target system type.
- Select the user and save. Choose the matching user, then select the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE save file you want to move. Review the confirmation screen carefully.
- Open the receiving console’s menu. On the Switch 2, go to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data, then choose Receive Save Data.
- Complete the prompts on both consoles. Keep the systems powered on and nearby until Nintendo reports that the operation is complete.
- Launch the game on the target. Start the software with the user whose save was transferred and confirm that the expected progress is present before deleting anything else.
Nintendo’s nearby-transfer guide documents the source-side menu and selection process. Its receiving-console instructions are in the same guide. The operation moves the file rather than duplicating it: Nintendo states that the save is deleted from the source system after it is sent.

What the target-system prompts mean
The source console identifies the user and title whose data will leave that system. The target console’s Receive Save Data command tells Nintendo where that incoming file should be accepted. If the target has no save for the title, the incoming file can become its active save. If it does have one, the system may offer cancellation or replacement. Read the title and user shown on screen before confirming.
After the operation, launch the game with the transferred profile and check that the expected chapter, unlocks and general progress are present. This verification is important because the source deletion happens as part of a move, not as a separate backup step. Do not erase the old console, remove its user or reset it until you have confirmed the target works.
Understand deletion and overwrite warnings
The source save is removed
Nearby transfer is not a backup command. Once the source console sends the file, Nintendo deletes that save from the source. If you still need the original console to retain progress, do not start this route without another verified copy or a supported cloud backup.
This also means that repeatedly sending the same file is not a way to create several working copies. Decide which console should hold the active save first. If you later move it back, the same send-and-delete behavior applies in the opposite direction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe target may ask to overwrite
If the receiving Switch 2 already has save data for the same software, Nintendo lets you cancel or proceed with an overwrite. Cancel if you have not inspected which file is newer. Accept only when you are certain the incoming save is the one you want, because Nintendo says overwritten target data cannot be recovered.
Do not assume the most recently opened console contains the newest progress. Compare your play history, user profile and the save selected on the source screen. If you cannot identify the correct file, stop and preserve the target rather than accepting an irreversible replacement.
Do not confuse a system transfer with cross-platform import
Nintendo’s tool moves compatible save data between Nintendo consoles. It does not, by itself, convert a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC file into a Switch 2 save. The official materials reviewed do not confirm any such import for this game.

Use Save Data Cloud instead
Cloud restore is useful when the original Nintendo console is unavailable or when you intentionally maintain a backup. It is separate from nearby transfer and requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Verify support before relying on it. Nintendo says to open the game’s eShop Software Details page or the title’s Software Menu Options and check whether Save Data Cloud is listed.
- Confirm your edition and region. Nintendo’s UK listing for the Switch 2 edition displays Save Data Cloud support, but storefront information and availability can vary by region.
- Use the same Nintendo Account. Cloud saves are associated with the Nintendo Account-linked user, so select that user on the target Switch 2.
- Download the backup through the console’s save-data cloud controls. Follow the prompts shown by your current system software, then launch the game and verify the restored progress.
Nintendo’s cloud-backup identification guide explains where to check support. The UK product page for the Switch 2 release is Nintendo’s official listing; it gives January 22, 2026 as the release date for that UK listing. That date and the cloud indicator should not be assumed to describe every territory.
Cloud versus nearby transfer
| Question | Nearby transfer | Save Data Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Are both consoles required? | Yes; they must be nearby and connected to the internet. | No, provided a supported backup is already available. |
| Is Nintendo Switch Online required? | No. | Yes. |
| Does the source retain its save? | No. Nintendo deletes the sent file. | The service restores a backup; check the console prompts before replacing local data. |
| What must be checked? | Matching Nintendo Account-linked user and target overwrite warning. | Cloud support for the exact software edition and region. |
Cloud is not an automatic solution for every copy of the game. The Nintendo UK listing is evidence that the Switch 2 edition shown there supports the feature, while Nintendo’s guidance still tells owners to verify the listing or software menu themselves.
Carry the Switch 2 demo save into the full game
This is not a console-to-console transfer. Square Enix describes it as a feature of the demo and full game: progress made in the free FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE demo can carry over when you continue in the full release. The publisher’s statement covers the Switch 2 release context, but it does not publish a universal sequence such as a named title-screen button or settings path.
Install or launch the full game on the same supported platform and read the instructions presented by that release. Do not delete the demo save while troubleshooting, because the demo file is the progress you are trying to carry forward. If the full game does not detect the expected progress, Square Enix’s announcements do not provide a recovery sequence; contact the publisher’s support channel for the specific edition rather than assuming that a console-system transfer will repair a game-level carryover problem.
Demo carryover is different from moving a console
Buying the full game does not mean you should open Transfer Your Save Data just to move progress from the demo into the full release. The confirmed relationship is between the demo save and the corresponding full game on the supported platform. Nintendo’s system utility is for moving a save between consoles and may delete the source file, which is a different operation and carries a different risk.
Keep the demo installed and its save intact until the full game recognizes the progress. Use the same Switch 2 user that created the demo save. If you changed consoles between playing the demo and buying the full game, first determine whether you are solving a game-level carryover issue or a console-to-console move; the official announcements do not provide a universal menu sequence for combining both actions.

What is and is not officially established
- Established: Square Enix confirms demo-save carryover to the full game in its official announcements.
- Established: Nintendo provides nearby-console save transfer through System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Established: Nearby transfer needs internet-connected, nearby consoles and users linked to the same Nintendo Account, but not Nintendo Switch Online.
- Established: The sent file is deleted from the source, and accepting a target overwrite can permanently replace the target’s existing save.
- Conditionally available: Save Data Cloud depends on Nintendo Switch Online and support for the exact software edition and region.
- Not established by the cited official materials: importing saves created on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC into the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
Do not treat the existence of a Switch 2 release as proof that every older console save is cross-compatible. Nintendo describes its feature as applying to compatible software, while Square Enix’s demo statement is specifically about the demo and full-game relationship.
Release-date context
Nintendo’s UK listing gives January 22, 2026 as the release date for the Switch 2 edition. Storefront dates, product availability and cloud indicators can differ by territory, so use your own regional listing when checking whether the edition you purchased supports the expected feature.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The transfer command is missing or will not start
Install pending system updates on both consoles, reconnect them to the internet, move them closer together, and verify that the selected users are linked to the same Nintendo Account. Reopen System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data after those checks.
The wrong save appears on the target
Stop before accepting an overwrite. Check the source user and the save-selection screen again. Because the source file is deleted after a successful send, do not perform a second transfer until you know which console contains the current progress.
The source console no longer shows the save
That can be expected after a successful nearby transfer: Nintendo says the sent save is deleted from the source. Check the target with the same Nintendo Account-linked user and launch the game there. If the target also lacks the file, avoid additional overwrites and use Nintendo’s support guidance for the transfer failure.
The cloud option is unavailable
Confirm that the user has Nintendo Switch Online and check the game’s eShop Software Details or Software Menu Options for Save Data Cloud support. A cloud option shown for one country’s listing is not a guarantee for every region.
The cloud restore shows older progress
A cloud service restores the backup that exists for that user and title; it does not combine local and cloud histories. Before accepting a restore, check whether the local target contains newer progress and whether replacing it is acceptable. Nintendo’s support instructions and the prompts on your console determine the exact restore controls.

The demo progress does not appear in the full game
Keep the demo save intact and verify that you are using the supported Switch 2 demo and corresponding full release. Square Enix has confirmed the carryover feature but has not published a menu-by-menu diagnostic procedure, so avoid deleting data or relying on an unofficial sequence presented as universal.
You only have a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC save
There is no confirmed import path in the cited Square Enix or Nintendo guidance. Do not spend time looking for a Nintendo system-transfer option that converts another platform’s file; that utility is for compatible Nintendo-console saves.

| You need to restore a backup without the original console nearby | Save Data Cloud, if the software supports it | Nintendo Switch Online required | Support varies by edition and region |
| Your only save is on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC | No officially confirmed Switch 2 import path | Not applicable | Do not assume cross-platform compatibility |
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my Switch 2 demo save to the full game?
Yes. Square Enix says the free FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE demo save can carry over to the full game. The publisher has not documented a universal button-by-button menu path, so follow the instructions shown by your edition and keep the demo save intact while checking.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to move a save from Switch to Switch 2?
No. Nintendo says nearby-console Transfer Your Save Data does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Both consoles still need internet access, must be near each other and must have users linked to the same Nintendo Account.
Does nearby transfer copy the save or move it?
It moves it. Nintendo states that the save file is deleted from the source system after sending. This is not a duplicate backup, so verify the target before resetting or removing anything from the source.
What if the Switch 2 already has a save?
The receiving system may let you cancel or overwrite the existing save. Cancel until you have confirmed which file is newer. Nintendo warns that overwritten target data cannot be recovered.
Can I import a PS5, Xbox or PC save into the Switch 2 version?
No official import path is established in the cited Square Enix and Nintendo guidance. Nintendo’s transfer tool is for compatible Nintendo-console saves and does not convert files from other platforms.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I know whether cloud restore is supported?
Nintendo says to check the game’s eShop Software Details page or its Software Menu Options for Save Data Cloud. Nintendo Switch Online is required, and support can vary by edition and region. The UK Switch 2 listing displays cloud support, but verify your own regional listing.
The Bottom Line
Use the route that matches the data you actually have: Square Enix’s demo-to-full carryover for Switch 2 demo progress, Nintendo’s nearby Transfer Your Save Data flow for a compatible console save, or Save Data Cloud when your edition supports it and you have Nintendo Switch Online. Nearby transfer deletes the source save, and a target overwrite cannot be undone, so confirm the user, title and destination before accepting any prompt. No official source cited here confirms importing a PlayStation, Xbox or PC save into the Switch 2 version.
