Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShort answer: saves and installed games transfer by different routes. On PlayStation, use Sony’s console-to-console transfer, PlayStation Plus cloud storage, or—for PS4 saves only—a USB drive. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, supported saves sync through Xbox network when you sign in; an external USB drive can move game installations. Before you erase or trade in your old console, confirm your saves are available on the new one.
First, separate saves from game installations
A save contains your progress and settings; an installed game is the much larger collection of files needed to run the game. Moving one does not necessarily move the other. Cloud save sync can restore progress without copying the installation, while an external drive can carry game files without being a save-transfer method.
Game saves are also tied to the account and the game’s compatibility rules. Use the same account on the new console, and do not assume a separate edition or cross-generation upgrade will use the same save unless the game supports it.
Transfer to a PS5
Sony supports transferring data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5 over the same network. Choose the save method that fits your situation; use a separate game-installation method if you also need to move large game files.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Option 1: Transfer directly from the old console
- On the source console, sign in with the account you will use on the new PS5, update its system software, and synchronize your trophies.
- Connect the source console and target PS5 to the same network.
- Start the data-transfer flow on the target PS5 and follow the on-screen instructions to select and copy supported data. Keep both consoles available during the transfer.
Sony’s PS4/PS5-to-PS5 transfer guide covers the preparation and transfer flow. Menu wording can vary with system software, so follow the prompts shown on the console.
Option 2: Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Cloud storage is useful when you do not want to transfer directly between consoles. It requires PlayStation Plus. Upload or sync the save from the source console, then access it on the PS5 with the same account.
- PS5 saves: Sony documents automatic sync with cloud storage when configured.
- PS4 saves: After the save is uploaded, manually download it to PS5 console storage; automatic upload does not mean it is automatically downloaded to the new console.
- Published limits: Sony lists up to 100 GB each for PS5 and PS4 saved data, and a maximum of 1,000 PS4 save files. These are storage limits, not a guarantee that a particular game supports a given save transfer.
See Sony’s PlayStation Plus cloud storage instructions for upload, download, and sync settings.

Option 3: Copy PS4 saves with USB
A PS4 save can be copied from PS4 system storage to a USB drive, then copied to PS5 storage. On PS4, open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device. On PS5, use the saved-data controls to copy the PS4 save from USB into console storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSony does not support copying PS5 saves from the console to USB. This route is for PS4 saved data, not PS5 saves and not installed games. Sony’s PS4 storage guide describes the save-copy process.
Move PlayStation game installations separately
USB extended storage for games is not the same thing as a FAT/exFAT USB drive used to copy PS4 saves. Sony says compatible PS4 games can be played from external USB storage on PS5. PS5 games stored there must be moved back to PS5 console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played. Sony lists compatible SuperSpeed USB game-storage drives from 250 GB to 8 TB; check its current PS5 storage guidance for device requirements and setup.

Transfer from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S
Let supported saves sync through Xbox network
For supported games, saves roam through the cloud between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Sign in to Xbox network on the new console with the account used for the game and allow the save to sync. This is a platform capability, not a guarantee for every title: compatibility can depend on the game and whether its editions share a TitleID. A separate edition or upgrade may not use the same save.
Microsoft’s backward-compatibility guidance describes cloud saves across Xbox One and Series X|S. Its developer documentation explains the conditions for save roaming between generations.
Move Xbox game installations with external USB storage
An external USB drive used with Xbox One can be connected to Xbox Series X|S to make compatible installed games available there. Xbox Wire also describes USB storage as a way to store games for transfer; whether a game can play from a particular drive depends on the game and storage requirements. If a title cannot run from that drive, move it to the console’s internal storage.
Microsoft’s Xbox storage overview explains the external-drive approach. It was published in 2020, so check current Xbox guidance for device and game compatibility rather than relying on older product recommendations.

Before you reset or trade in the old console
- Open each important game on the new console and check that the expected save or progress is present.
- For PlayStation cloud saves, verify upload and download status; specifically download PS4 saves to PS5 storage.
- For Xbox, give the game time to sync after signing in, then confirm the correct profile and save are loaded.
- Keep the old console and any USB drive unchanged until you have confirmed the new console has the progress and installations you need.
