If your save is already from a PS4, moving it to PS5 is supported through network transfer, USB copying, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
That distinction matters before you buy an adapter or copy files to a USB drive. A PS3 can export data to USB, but Sony’s PS5 USB documentation covers PS4 saves, not PS3 saves. Treat a PS3-to-PS4/PS5 move as game-specific and unconfirmed unless the game’s own support documentation provides an import feature.

Compatibility at a glance
The console generations do not share one universal save-file format. The documented routes are different for each starting point:

| Starting save | Destination | Sony-documented method | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS2 memory card | Some PS3 systems | PlayStation 2 memory card adapter and PS3 internal storage | Works only on a PS3 model and game setup that support the relevant PS2 software. Copying a save does not add PS2 game playback. |
| PS3 internal storage | PS4 or PS5 | No general migration path is established in the cited Sony instructions | A PS3 USB export is not demonstrated to be importable as a PS4 or PS5 save. Check the individual game. |
| PS4 | PS5 | Same-network transfer, PS4 save copied to USB, or PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Supported, subject to the game, account, storage, and USB requirements described by Sony. |
| PS5 | USB drive | Not supported for copying PS5 saved data to USB | Sony states that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive. |
Sony’s current transfer page covers moving data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5, not importing legacy PS2 or PS3 saves as modern-generation saves: PlayStation’s PS4 and PS5 transfer instructions.

Move a PS2 memory-card save to a compatible PS3
This is the narrow, documented PS2 route. Sony’s PS3 documentation describes using a separately sold PlayStation 2 memory card adapter to copy saved data from a PS2 card to the PS3’s internal storage. Sony’s regional support guidance also addresses saving PS2 and PlayStation data on PS3 systems: Sony’s PS2 and PS game save guidance for PS3.
What you need
- A PS2 memory card containing the save.
- A compatible PlayStation 3 system with internal storage.
- The separately sold PlayStation 2 memory card adapter identified in Sony’s PS3 documentation.
- The PS2 game, or a PS3 system that can run the relevant PS2 software, if you intend to continue playing the save on that console.
The adapter is for reading and copying the card’s saved data. It is not a PS4/PS5 converter, and it does not make every PS3 capable of running PS2 games.
Copy the card data
- Connect the PS2 memory card to the PlayStation 2 memory card adapter.
- Connect the adapter to the PS3 as described in the console’s documentation.
- Use the PS3’s saved-data management functions to select the PS2 card data and copy it to internal storage.
- After the copy completes, confirm that the save appears in the PS3’s saved-data area before disconnecting the adapter or deleting anything from the card.
The exact on-screen choices can vary by PS3 software and model, so use the instructions for your console rather than assuming that a current PS4 or PS5 menu will appear. The English CECHL01 Quick Reference Guide identifies this adapter workflow in its version 2.40 documentation: CECHL01 PS3 Quick Reference Guide.

Check PS2 playback before relying on the save
Save storage and game playback are separate capabilities. Sony’s CECHL01 guide warns: “Even if you copy saved data from PlayStation®2 format software to the hard disk, you will not be able to play games on this model of the PS3™ system using this saved data.” That statement is specific to the CECHL01 model and describes a PS3 without PS2 software playback. Other PS3 models have different compatibility, and a copied save cannot change the model’s hardware or software support.

Before buying an adapter, identify the exact PS3 model and verify whether it supports the particular PS2 title. If the PS3 cannot run that game, the copied file may remain stored data rather than a usable continuation of your game.
Why a PS3 USB export is not a PS4 or PS5 conversion
Older PS3 documentation says data stored on the PS3 hard disk can be copied to USB mass storage. That establishes an export capability, but it does not establish that a PS4 or PS5 can read the exported file as its own saved data.
Sony’s current PS5 storage documentation describes PS4 and PS5 saved-data categories. It does not provide a PS3 saved-data import procedure. Its transfer instructions likewise describe PS4-to-PS5 and PS5-to-PS5 migration, not PS3-to-PS5 conversion: How to manage PS5 console storage space.

You may be able to place PS3-exported files on a USB drive, but the cited Sony instructions do not say that a PS5 will recognize them, convert them, or attach them to a PS4/PS5 installation. A USB drive is storage media, not a format translator. Copying bytes from one generation to another does not rewrite the save’s game ID, encryption, metadata, or internal structure.

For that reason, do not buy a large drive or a third-party “converter” on the assumption that a PS3 backup will become a PS5 save. The official evidence supports the export step only; it does not support successful PS4/PS5 import.
Could a particular game still support it?
Possibly, but that would be a feature of the game or re-release rather than a general console function. A remaster, remake, subscription version, or digital edition may use a different save format. Do not assume that a newer release will read an original PS2 or PS3 file. Look for an official page for the exact game that explicitly names save import, cross-generation progression, or a one-time conversion.
Supported ways to move a PS4 save to PS5
If the file you need is a PS4 save, you have three documented choices. These methods do not solve a PS3-to-PS5 transfer; they apply after the save exists in PS4 format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOption 1: Transfer over the same network
- Start the PS4 and PS5 and sign in with the account associated with the saves.
- Connect both consoles to the same network, using the connection arrangement specified by Sony’s transfer instructions.
- Begin the PS5 data-transfer process and select the PS4 data you want to move.
- Leave both consoles powered and connected until the transfer finishes.
Sony describes this as transferring PS4 data to PS5 over the same network. The process can include games and saved data, but the game installed on PS5 still has to support the save you are trying to use. Follow the current prompts at Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 transfer page, because menu wording and system software requirements can change.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Option 2: Copy PS4 saves to USB and import them on PS5
- Use a USB storage device that the console accepts and that has enough free space for the PS4 saved data.
- On the PS4, copy the relevant PS4 saved data to the USB device using the console’s saved-data management controls.
- Safely disconnect the device from the PS4.
- Connect it to the PS5 and use the PS5 saved-data controls to copy the PS4 save from USB storage.
- Launch the PS4 game on PS5 and check whether the game recognizes the imported save.
Sony cautions that not every USB device works with every console function. A USB method documented for PS4 saves should not be treated as evidence that PS3 saves are supported. The PS5 storage guidance is the reference for the supported categories and device requirements: PS5 storage management support.
Option 3: Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage
- On the PS4, upload the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- On the PS5, sign in to the same PlayStation Network account with an active PlayStation Plus entitlement.
- Open cloud saved-data controls and download the PS4 save to PS5 console storage.
- Start the game and verify the save before removing the local or cloud copy.
Sony says PS4 cloud saves must be manually downloaded to PS5 storage. Cloud storage requires PlayStation Plus. The current support page lists up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data, up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data, and a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files; those are published service limits and may change: PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 consoles.

You have a PS2 card and a PS3
Use the PS2 memory card adapter workflow only if your PS3 model and the game’s PS2 playback requirements line up. Copy the card to PS3 internal storage, keep the original card untouched as a backup, and test the game on the PS3 before assuming the save is usable.
You have a PS3 save and want to continue on PS4
There is no general Sony-documented PS3-to-PS4 save migration in the cited instructions. Check the game’s official support page for a title-specific import. If no such feature is documented, preserve the PS3 save and continue it on PS3 rather than treating a USB export as a guaranteed PS4 import.

You have a PS3 save and want to continue on PS5
The same limitation applies, with an additional format distinction: Sony’s PS5 storage documentation addresses PS4 and PS5 save categories, not PS3 saves. A PS3 backup on USB is therefore not an established PS5 save source. Search the exact game’s documentation for a supported upgrade or import path before purchasing hardware or software.
You already have a PS4 save
Choose network transfer when both consoles are available, USB when you want a local copy, or PlayStation Plus when cloud storage is convenient. Confirm that the PS5 version or backward-compatible PS4 version of the game can use the save.
Troubleshooting and precautions
The PS2 save does not appear on the PS3
- Confirm that the adapter is the type described for PS2 memory-card copying and is connected correctly.
- Check the PS3 model and system documentation; the ability to store a save is not identical to PS2 game playback.
- Try copying one save at a time and wait for the operation to finish before disconnecting the card.
- Keep the original memory card unchanged so you can retry if the copy is incomplete.
The PS3 save appears on USB but not on PS5
- Do not repeatedly overwrite the original backup while experimenting.
- Confirm whether the game’s publisher documents a PS3-to-PS4 or PS3-to-PS5 import.
- Check that you are using the correct PS4 or PS5 edition of the game and the same account where an account-linked import is required.
- Understand that the PS5’s documented USB save workflow concerns PS4 saves; a visible file on a drive is not proof of compatibility.
The PS4 save is missing on PS5
- For network transfer, verify that both consoles are on the same network and remain powered during the process.
- For USB transfer, use a device accepted by the consoles and copy the save into the PS5’s PS4 saved-data area.
- For cloud storage, sign in to the account that uploaded the save and manually download it to PS5 storage.
- Check the game’s own save-import or version requirements; a successful console transfer cannot repair an incompatible game format.
You are considering a third-party converter
No transfer-success rate or general-purpose converter is established by the cited Sony documentation. Treat claims that a tool converts any PS2 or PS3 save into a PS5 save as unverified until the game developer documents the method and you can protect the original file.
What to verify for remasters and re-releases
Console-level transfer support does not guarantee that a specific game will accept an older save. Before buying a remaster or starting a new-generation edition, look for all of the following in the game’s official documentation:
- The exact original platform, such as PS2 or PS3.
- The exact destination edition, such as a PS4 version running on PS5 or a native PS5 version.
- Whether saves are imported automatically, through an in-game menu, or through a separate conversion file.
- Whether the feature is limited by region, account, disc versus digital edition, or a one-time transfer.
- Whether trophies, downloadable content, patches, or alternate editions affect compatibility.
If those details are absent, plan on the save not transferring and keep the old console or its backup available. A newer release may share a title and story with the original while using an entirely different save system.
Bottom line
The only broad legacy move Sony clearly documents here is PS2 memory-card data copied to internal storage on some PS3 systems. Sony’s current PS4 and PS5 instructions do not establish a general PS2/PS3-to-PS4/PS5 save path, and a PS3 USB export is not a demonstrated converter. For PS4 saves, PS5 offers documented network, USB, and PlayStation Plus options. For anything older, the decisive evidence must come from the individual game’s official import documentation.
