You can transfer saved data directly from your old PS5 to a PS5 Pro during the Pro’s initial setup or afterward. Use the same PlayStation account on both consoles, put them on the same network, then start Data Transfer on the PS5 Pro. PlayStation Plus is not required for this direct transfer; it is required if you use cloud storage instead.
Before you start
In Sony’s instructions, the source console is your old PS5 and the destination console is your PS5 Pro. Before transferring:
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both consoles.
- Update the old PS5 to the latest system software and synchronize its trophy information.
- Connect both consoles to the same network. They can use Wi-Fi on the same router; a commercially available LAN cable is optional and may make transfer faster.
- Connect the PS5 Pro to a TV with HDMI. Sony says the old PS5 does not need to be connected to a TV.
Sony’s US support guide is the basis for this process; menu wording can vary slightly by region or system software version. PlayStation: Transfer games and saved data from PS4 or PS5 to PS5.
How to transfer data from PS5 to PS5 Pro
During the PS5 Pro’s initial setup
- Turn on the PS5 Pro and follow its on-screen setup steps.
- When prompted to transfer data, follow the instructions to connect to the old PS5 and select the data to transfer.
- Keep both consoles powered on and follow the remaining prompts until the transfer begins.
After the PS5 Pro is set up
- On the PS5 Pro, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.
- Select Continue, then follow the on-screen instructions to find the old PS5 and choose what to transfer.
- Leave both consoles on until the transfer is complete. The PS5 Pro may restart automatically; some data can continue transferring afterward.
During a transfer, do not turn off either console, change network settings, or run internet-connection tests. Sony warns that interruption or network changes may damage or lose data. One transfer can move data from one PS4 or PS5 source console to one PS5 destination console.

What transfers—and what does not
Sony lists PS5 saved data, user and account information, screenshots and video clips, games playable on PS5, and console settings among the data that can transfer. Data already on the PS5 Pro does not transfer from the old console, so check the destination before starting if it contains anything you need to keep.
A game may appear playable before all its data has arrived. To check remaining activity, open Downloads/Uploads in the Control Center on the PS5 Pro.

Direct transfer or PlayStation Plus cloud storage?
| Route | PS Plus required? | What it moves | When it helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct console transfer | No | Can include saved data, account and user information, captures, PS5-playable games, and settings | When the old PS5 is available and both consoles can be connected to the same network |
| Cloud storage | Yes | Saved data | When saves have been uploaded or synced and you want to download them after signing in on the new console |
For cloud storage, check that the relevant saves have synced on the old PS5 before relying on them. Sony’s Canada support guide describes automatic syncing for PS5 saves and automatic upload for PS4 saves; downloading PS4 saves to PS5 storage is manual. On the PS5 Pro, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4) > Download or Delete from Cloud Storage > Download to console storage. See PlayStation: How to manage PlayStation Plus cloud storage on PS5 consoles.
Sony’s current support page lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data, up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data, and a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are figures on Sony’s undated support page, accessed October 8, 2026, and should not be treated as permanent plan terms.

Can you transfer PS5 saves with a USB drive?
No. Sony says, “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.” For PS5 saves, use direct console transfer or PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
PS4 game saves are different: Sony allows them to be copied from the old console to a USB drive and then copied to the new console. Sony’s full-console USB backup and restore process is also separate from copying PS5 saves. Restoring a full backup erases all data on the destination console, so it is not the right method if you only want to move game saves. See PlayStation: Back up and restore PS5 console data.
