Use The Witcher 3’s in-game Cross Progression feature. Update the game, link the same CD PROJEKT RED account on the PC and console, enable Cross Progression, and create a new save. When a cloud icon appears beside that save, sign in to the same account on the destination platform through My Rewards, then choose the uploaded file under Load Game.
This is an account-and-cloud transfer. You are not copying a Windows save folder directly onto a PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch. The procedure below covers PC-to-console transfers first, then explains the separate system-transfer methods for PS4-to-PS5 and Xbox One-to-Xbox Series X|S.

What you need before transferring
Cross Progression works only when the game and account setup are compatible on both ends. Check these items before you leave the source platform:
Recommended Free Tools
- The Witcher 3 is updated on the source device. The installed version is shown on the game’s main menu.
- You can sign in to one CD PROJEKT RED account on both platforms. The account must be the same account, not merely the same console or PC user name.
- The destination platform has a compatible edition of the game and the expansions or downloadable content required by the save.
- If the save uses mods, the destination can run the same set of required mods. A console cannot load a PC-only mod simply because the save was uploaded.
- You can create a fresh save after Cross Progression is enabled and verify that the cloud icon is visible.
You do not normally need to buy the game again if you already own it on the destination platform. A game license and a save file are separate; Cross Progression moves the save through your linked account, not the license.

PC to console: the official Cross Progression method
1. Update the source installation
Launch The Witcher 3 on the PC and look at the main menu for the installed version. Install any available game update before attempting the transfer. A version mismatch can prevent the destination from recognizing the uploaded save, so update first rather than troubleshooting a missing file later.
2. Open the Cross Progression controls
From the source game, open Load Game. The Cross Progression control appears at the bottom of the screen. Depending on the version and whether the account has already been connected, the game may instead direct you to My Rewards to link an account.
3. Link your CD PROJEKT RED account
Follow the sign-in prompts and connect the game to your CD PROJEKT RED account. Cross Progression is enabled by default after linking, but verify the setting directly at Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. If it is off, turn it on before creating the transfer save.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Create a new cloud save
Do not rely on an older local save that was created before you linked the account. Make a new manual save after enabling Cross Progression. The game uploads that new file to the cloud. Wait until a cloud icon appears beside the save name; that icon is the practical confirmation that the file is available to another device.
The official Cross Progression guide says the feature provides the latest save for every save type. In practice, the safest handoff is one fresh save made after activation, followed by an explicit check for its cloud icon. Keep the PC running until the save is visibly marked rather than closing the game immediately after saving.
5. Connect the destination platform
Start The Witcher 3 on the console. Choose My Rewards when offered, and sign in with the exact CD PROJEKT RED account used on the PC. If you accidentally connect a different account, the uploaded save will not appear in the destination’s list.
6. Load the uploaded save
Open Load Game. Select the cloud-uploaded save and let the game finish loading before making another save. Once it opens correctly, create a new manual save on the console with Cross Progression still enabled. That gives you a current cloud copy for returning to the PC later.

PC-to-console uses Cross Progression. Transfers within one console family have additional system tools, but those tools are not substitutes for moving a PC save to a console.
| Source and destination | Primary method | Account or service | Network or cloud dependency | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC to PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch | In-game Cross Progression: upload a new save, then load it on the destination | The same CD PROJEKT RED account on both devices | Game cloud upload and download require an internet connection | Direct copying of a PC save folder to a console |
| PS4 to PS5 in backward-compatible play | PlayStation Plus cloud upload, LAN or Wi‑Fi transfer, or compatible storage-device transfer | The same PSN account | Depends on the selected PlayStation system-transfer route | A PC-to-console procedure |
| Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S | Xbox cloud-synchronized saved data through Smart Delivery, or the consoles’ network-transfer option | The same Xbox account | Internet-connected cloud sync or a local network transfer | The CD PROJEKT RED Cross Progression workflow by itself |
Use the first row when one side is a PC. The PS4-to-PS5 and Xbox One-to-Xbox Series instructions are included for readers who are changing console generations, because those moves use platform-level save systems and have different account requirements.
Edition, expansion, and DLC compatibility
Base game save loaded in Complete Edition
CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance says a base-game save made without expansions can load in the Complete Edition. This makes moving from a base installation to a version that includes the expansions possible, provided the game itself is updated and the account is linked correctly.

Complete Edition save loaded in the base game
The reverse direction is restricted. A save created in the Complete Edition will not load in the base game unless the required expansions and downloadable content are present on the destination. If the save was made after entering content from Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine, install the corresponding content before treating the file as missing or damaged.
Separate console edition products
CD PROJEKT RED also warns that local console saves for the regular game and the GOTY or Complete Edition are not compatible as separate products. Cross Progression is the supported way to continue from the base version when moving between those products. A local save that does not appear in the other edition is therefore not necessarily corrupt; the edition itself may be the incompatibility.
Current edition announcements
A CD PROJEKT RED FAQ updated shortly before this guide states that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included in the Base Game, that the save files remain compatible, and that Cross Progression remains functional. The same FAQ describes a planned Remastered upgrade for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with a free upgrade planned for Nintendo Switch owners. Release status is time-sensitive, so check the current official FAQ before relying on an upgrade for a transfer.
Modded saves: why a cloud upload may still fail
Uploading a modded save does not remove its mod dependencies. For cross-platform compatibility, CD PROJEKT RED’s mod-support guidance requires the same set of mods to be enabled on both platforms. The destination must have compatible versions and the same load requirements; a missing or incompatible mod can stop the save from loading correctly or can produce an unstable game.
Before transferring, record the enabled mod set and compare it with the destination installation. If a console cannot install a required PC mod, use an unmodded save created after removing the dependency, or continue that playthrough on a platform that supports the mod. Do not assume that a save will become unmodded simply because it is downloaded to a console.

Console achievements and trophies are disabled on modded saves, according to the same official support article. That limitation applies to the save’s modded state, not to the account-linking process. If achievements or trophies matter for the destination playthrough, use a clean save rather than trying to repair a modded one after transfer.
Detailed procedures for same-family console moves
PS4 to PS5
A PS4-to-PS5 move under backward-compatible play is separate from PC-to-console Cross Progression. CD PROJEKT RED lists three platform routes:
- Upload the PS4 save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, then download it on the PS5 under the same PSN account.
- Use the PlayStation LAN or Wi‑Fi transfer process to move compatible saved data between the consoles.
- Use a compatible storage device when supported by the PlayStation system-transfer process.
These options move a PlayStation save within the PlayStation ecosystem. They do not explain how to place a PC save on a PS5; for that, use the in-game account-and-cloud procedure described earlier.
Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S
For Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, CD PROJEKT RED describes Smart Delivery with internet-connected cloud-synchronized saved data, or the consoles’ network-transfer option. Sign in with the same Xbox account, allow the source console to finish syncing, and then let the Series console retrieve the save before launching the game. If you choose network transfer instead, keep both consoles on the same local network and follow the Xbox transfer prompts.

Troubleshooting a save that does not appear
Work through the checks in order. Each one rules out a different failure point.
Check the source save’s cloud status
Return to the source platform’s Load Game screen. Confirm that the save was created after Cross Progression was enabled and that a cloud icon appears beside its name. If there is no icon, create another manual save while online and wait for the icon before switching devices.
Confirm both account links
Open My Rewards on both platforms and verify that each copy of the game is connected to the same CD PROJEKT RED account. Being signed in to the same PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, or Nintendo profile does not by itself prove that the CD PROJEKT RED account is the same.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify the setting is still enabled
On each installation, check Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. Linking normally enables the feature, but it can be toggled off. Turn it on, create a new save, and check for the cloud icon again.
Update both installations
Install the latest available patch on the source and destination. The version is visible on the main menu. A destination that is behind the source may fail to list or load a cloud save even though the account connection is correct.
Match the game content
Compare the editions and installed DLC. A Complete Edition save can require expansions that are absent from a base installation. Also check the regular-versus-GOTY/Complete product distinction on consoles, because local saves for those products are not interchangeable as separate products.
Compare mod requirements
If the save is modded, confirm that every required mod is present and enabled on the destination in the same set. Remove the mod dependency by using an appropriate clean save if the destination cannot support the required mods. Remember that achievements and trophies are disabled on modded saves.
Allow the cloud operation to finish
Keep the source game connected to the internet long enough for the cloud icon to appear. On the destination, remain online while opening Load Game so the game can retrieve the uploaded file. If the icon and account checks are correct but the save still fails, the official troubleshooting material does not document every account or network error state; record the edition, platform pair, game version, and exact symptom before contacting CD PROJEKT RED support.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying a PC folder to a USB drive and plugging it into a console. The supported PC-to-console route is Cross Progression, not direct filesystem copying.
- Saving before linking the account. An old local save may not have a cloud copy. Make a new save after activation.
- Using different CD PROJEKT RED accounts. Platform accounts can match while the game-service accounts do not.
- Assuming every edition reads every save. Expansion requirements and regular-versus-GOTY/Complete product differences can block loading.
- Ignoring mods. The destination needs the same compatible mod set, and modded saves disable console achievements and trophies.
- Applying PS4-to-PS5 or Xbox transfer instructions to a PC source. Those are same-family platform routes; PC-to-console still requires the in-game feature.
- Switching devices before the cloud icon appears. Without that indicator, there is no confirmation that the fresh save has uploaded.
Returning to the PC after playing on console
The process works in both directions. After playing on the console, leave Cross Progression enabled, create a new manual save, and wait for its cloud icon. On the PC, sign in to the same CD PROJEKT RED account, open Load Game, and select that uploaded save. Keep the edition, DLC, and mod requirements aligned each time you move between devices.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Is one side a PC? Use in-game Cross Progression.
- Are both devices PlayStation consoles? For PS4-to-PS5 backward-compatible play, choose PlayStation Plus cloud, LAN/Wi‑Fi, or compatible storage transfer.
- Are both devices Xbox consoles? Use Xbox cloud-synced saved data through Smart Delivery or network transfer.
- For Cross Progression, are both games updated and linked to the same CD PROJEKT RED account?
- Was a new save created after enabling the feature, and does its cloud icon show?
- Do both installations contain the expansions and DLC required by the save?
- If modded, can the destination run the identical compatible mod set?
