For Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, sign in to the new console with the same Xbox account, connect it to the internet, and launch the game. The game can then sync its cloud save. Xbox supports cloud save transfers between these console families, but Xbox 360 saves do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S—even if the game itself is backward compatible. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance explains that generation boundary.
Transfer an Xbox One or Series X|S save to another console
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves can roam between those console families through the cloud. Use the same Microsoft/Xbox account that you used on the original console, and give the source console a chance to sync before switching.
- On the original console: connect to the internet and allow the game to sync its save.
- On the new console: connect to the internet and sign in with the same account.
- Launch the game: wait for any syncing status to finish before playing. Xbox describes cloud saves as the transfer method between Xbox One and Series X|S consoles. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance.
Cloud save behavior depends on the title and whether it recognizes the relevant save. Microsoft’s developer policy for specified titles documents cases where cloud saves may not be recognized, so a sync should not be treated as an unconditional guarantee for every game or platform combination. Microsoft’s game-save policy describes these expectations and failure cases.
Can you transfer Xbox 360 saves to Xbox One or Series X|S?
No. Xbox states that saves created on Xbox 360 do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. This remains true when the Xbox 360 game is playable through backward compatibility. A game being compatible does not make its original-generation save transferable. Xbox’s compatibility information distinguishes game compatibility from save transfer.

Keep the save’s origin in mind: an Xbox One or Series X|S save for a game is not the same thing as a save originally created on Xbox 360. The stated cloud transfer applies to saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S, not Xbox 360 saves.
Can a USB drive transfer Xbox saves?
Only as a limited legacy option. A Microsoft Xbox 360 manual describes using a USB flash drive to transfer some saved games between Xbox 360 consoles. It does not provide a route for transferring Xbox 360 saves to Xbox One or Series X|S. Consult the Xbox 360 manual’s USB guidance, and follow the prompts shown by your console and game; the manual is historical, and not every save is covered.

Moving a game is not the same as moving its save
Network Transfer and external or expansion storage can move or store game and app installations. Those operations do not, by themselves, establish that a game save has moved. For an Xbox One or Series X|S save, use the cloud-sync process rather than assuming that copying the installed game also copied its progress. Xbox provides separate guidance for Network Transfer and storage management.

- Confirm that the destination console is online and signed in to the same account used on the source console.
- Check that the source console had an opportunity to sync before you moved to the destination.
- Launch the game and wait for its sync status to finish before continuing.
- If the game presents an overwrite or delete prompt and you cannot tell which copy is newer, do not accept it until you understand which save it will keep. Microsoft’s developer policy documents cases in which titles may fail to recognize cloud saves or may overwrite them.
- If the save originated on Xbox 360 and you are moving to Xbox One or Series X|S, cloud syncing will not bridge that generation gap.
An Xbox Wire announcement dated August 19, 2026 describes automatic Xbox-network backup and syncing at game launch, along with local-save management for Xbox Insiders. The local-save management feature is described for Insiders; do not assume it is available to every player. Read the Xbox Wire announcement.
