On Xbox Series X|S, a USB drive can store most optimized games, but most must be moved to the internal SSD or a compatible Storage Expansion Card before you can play them. On Xbox One, compatible games can generally be both stored and played from USB storage.
Before you start: choose and prepare a drive
For Xbox game storage, Seagate’s guidance specifies a USB 3.0-or-later drive with at least 128 GB of capacity. A larger drive is more practical for a game library. Connect it directly to the console with a reliable cable; avoid a hub as the default setup.
When the Xbox prompts you, choose Format for games & apps. Formatting erases the drive, so back up any files you need before continuing. The console’s displayed free space—not the capacity printed on the drive—is the amount available for games, because formatting and system management use some space. A drive’s USB rating does not guarantee a particular transfer speed: time depends on the drive, cable, console, game size and other activity.

How to move a game to an external hard drive
- Connect the formatted external drive to the Xbox and wait for it to be recognized.
- Open My games & apps, then select See all.
- Highlight the game, press the controller’s Menu button (the button with three horizontal lines), and choose Manage game and add-ons or Manage.
- Choose Move or copy.
- Select the game and any add-ons you want to transfer, then choose the external drive as the destination.
- Select Move selected and confirm. Wait for the operation to finish before disconnecting the drive.
- Open the drive’s game list to confirm the game appears in its new location.
An alternate route is Settings → System → Storage devices: select the source drive, open its move-or-copy command, choose the items and destination, then confirm. Xbox dashboard labels can change, and wording may vary depending on whether you start from storage settings or a game’s management screen. Look for Manage, Move or copy, the destination drive and the final move or copy command.
Move or copy: which should you choose?
Move relocates the installation and removes it from the original drive after the transfer. Choose it when your aim is to free internal space. Copy leaves the original installed and creates a second local installation on the destination, if the console allows the operation and there is enough room. Copying is useful when testing a drive or keeping the original available, but it is not a complete backup of saves, licenses, updates or downloadable content.

How to move a game back to the Xbox
- Open My games & apps → See all and highlight the game on the external drive.
- Open Manage game and add-ons → Move or copy.
- Select the game, choose the internal drive or compatible Expansion Card as the destination, and select Move selected.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then launch the game.
On Series X|S, a game marked as optimized may be stored on USB but unable to launch until it is moved to the internal SSD or a compatible Expansion Card.
Which games can you play directly from a USB drive?
| Game and storage | Can it usually be played directly? |
|---|---|
| Xbox One game on external USB storage | Usually yes. |
| Xbox 360 or original Xbox backward-compatible game on external USB storage | Usually yes, if the title is supported by Xbox backward compatibility and you have the required license. |
| Xbox Series X|S-optimized game on an ordinary USB HDD or SSD | Generally no; most need the internal SSD or a compatible Expansion Card to run. |
| Xbox Series X|S-optimized game on a compatible Expansion Card | Yes, subject to the game’s own requirements. |
| Game on an unformatted or media-only drive | No; the console must recognize it as game storage. |
Check a title’s designation using Xbox’s guide to finding games optimized for Xbox Series X|S. The rule is about the title’s optimization and supported storage, not simply whether the external drive is an HDD or SSD.

USB hard drive, USB SSD or Expansion Card?
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| External USB HDD | Adding lots of storage for less, archiving Series X|S titles and playing compatible Xbox One or backward-compatible games. | Slower transfers than an SSD; mechanical drives are more vulnerable to physical shock. |
| External USB SSD | Faster transfers and loading than a mechanical HDD. | Usually costs more per terabyte, and does not make most optimized Series X|S games playable from ordinary USB storage. |
| Compatible Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Playing Series X|S-optimized games from added storage without repeatedly moving them to the internal SSD. | Costs more than using USB storage for archiving; an unnecessary expense if you do not mind moving games before playing. |
Xbox describes the Seagate Expansion Card as providing added storage while maintaining the console’s peak speed and performance. Manufacturer material lists 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB variants, but availability can vary by region and date. See Xbox’s Expansion Card page, Seagate’s product information and Seagate’s Expansion Card FAQ. A fast USB SSD is still USB storage; speed alone does not turn it into an Expansion Card.
Transfer games from one Xbox to another
If you mean moving games between consoles rather than to a USB drive, Xbox’s network transfer feature copies games and apps over your local network. Connect both consoles to the same network, make sure the source console is available, and enable network transfer in the source console’s settings. This can avoid downloading the same game data again, but it does not transfer ownership or replace cloud saves.

If the transfer option does not appear, check that network transfer is enabled on the source and both consoles are on the same local network. Installed game files and save data are separate. Moving a game does not normally require you to move progress as a separate file; saves are associated with your Xbox profile and may synchronize through Xbox services when the console is online. Let synchronization finish before switching consoles or removing a drive. Recovery is not guaranteed if the console has never synced, synchronization was disabled, or a save or profile is corrupted.

A disc-based game can be installed on the external drive, but the disc may still be required to launch it. A digital game can be moved, but the account must still have the license or access through the console’s sharing arrangement. Moving or copying files does not change either kind of ownership. Updates, downloadable content and compatibility updates may also need to be installed; select add-ons in the transfer list when the console offers them.
Troubleshoot a drive or transfer problem
The Xbox does not recognize the drive
- Disconnect and reconnect it, then try another USB port and a different compatible cable.
- Connect it directly to the console and restart the Xbox.
- Check Settings → System → Storage devices to see whether it appears.
- If the Xbox offers to format it, first back up anything you want to keep; formatting erases the drive.
- If the drive still is not recognized, test it on another device to check for a drive or enclosure problem.
Recognition can fail if the drive does not meet the capacity or USB requirements, is formatted for another purpose, has a faulty cable or insufficient power, or is failing. If it appears only as media storage, it may not meet game-storage requirements or may not have been set up for games and apps. Let the Xbox perform that setup rather than starting by formatting it on a PC.
Move is unavailable, or a transfer stops
- Close the game and wait for any installation or update to finish.
- Check that the destination has enough free space and that both drives are connected.
- Retry from the game’s Manage game and add-ons screen. Some add-ons or system-managed items may have restrictions.
- Do not unplug the drive during a move or copy. If the operation stops, restart the console and retry.
- If one game repeatedly fails, troubleshoot that title; if several fail, check the drive, cable, port or drive state.
- For a copy, verify the destination installation before removing the original. Do not delete local saves as a routine fix.
The game is listed but will not launch
For a Series X|S-optimized title on USB storage, move it to the internal SSD or a compatible Expansion Card. For other titles, check that the drive remains connected, the correct licensed account is signed in, the required disc is inserted, any update is complete, and the game is supported on that console.
Can you transfer an Xbox game to a PC hard drive?
Not as a normal Windows installation: an Xbox console’s game-storage format is not a general-purpose PC game format, and copying those files to a PC will not normally make the game playable there. Use the supported PC installation path for a Windows version, Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement or PC Game Pass game.
