Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo move a Nintendo Network ID (NNID) and its associated data to another 3DS-family system, use Nintendo’s System Transfer feature on both consoles: choose Send from This System on the source and Receive from Nintendo 3DS on the target. The consoles must be compatible, connected to the internet, updated, and set to the same region. This moves your account between systems for the account holder; it does not transfer account ownership to another person.
Before you start: check compatibility and protect the target
- Have both consoles available. Nintendo’s transfer process uses local wireless communication and requires the source and target systems.
- Connect both systems to the internet, update them, and set them to the same region. If a system’s region settings were changed, Nintendo instructs users to launch Nintendo eShop at least once before transferring.
- Check the target for an existing NNID. A target system with an NNID already linked cannot receive the transfer. Nintendo’s instructions say to format the target to remove the link first. Formatting erases local data, so review Nintendo’s format guidance and back up or preserve anything important before proceeding.
- Have the source NNID password ready. The transfer flow may ask you to enter it.
- Confirm that the model direction is allowed. Nintendo says a New Nintendo 3DS XL cannot transfer to a standard 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS. Once an NNID is associated with a New Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo says it can transfer only to another New Nintendo 3DS XL.
Nintendo’s instructions vary by model and storage setup. Check the support procedure for the exact source and target pair before beginning; some transfers between New systems have PC-based instructions, while others use the wireless method.

How to transfer the NNID between 3DS systems
- On the source console, open System Settings > Other Settings > System Transfer. The submenu number differs between standard and New systems, so follow the path for your specific model.
- Choose the option to transfer from a Nintendo 3DS-family system, accept the prompts, and select Send from This System. Enter the NNID password if requested.
- On the target console, open System Transfer, choose the Nintendo 3DS transfer option, accept the prompts, and select Receive from Nintendo 3DS.
- When prompted, select and confirm the source-and-target pairing. Read warnings about duplicate data, information on the target being overwritten, and software stability; then follow the on-screen directions for the transfer method Nintendo offers for your setup.
- Keep both consoles powered during the process. Nintendo warns that a wireless transfer may take over four hours; monitor battery levels and connect a low-battery console to power.
Do not assume every model pair has the same transfer options. Use Nintendo’s model-specific instructions for the exact systems and storage arrangement involved.
What transfers—and what may be overwritten
Nintendo’s NNID and transfer guidance describes the transfer as moving the account and its usage rights, along with supported information. Depending on the content, this can include:
#1 Best Overall
- Features: 3D Depth Slider, Wi-Fi Capability, Nintendo 3DS Sound, Mii Maker, 3D Camera, Front & Rear Camera, Touch Screen
- Includes: AC Power Adapter, Stylus
- Wired Connectivity: Wireless
- Model Compatibility: Nintendo 3DS
- Usage rights to data saved on the SD card, and save data associated with DSiWare and downloaded 3DS software.
- DSiWare, Nintendo eShop user history, some save data from pre-installed software, and Nintendo DS software settings.
- System settings, friend list data, and Swapnote data.
Nintendo warns that most information already on the target is overwritten by information from the source. Two NNIDs cannot be merged. Some pre-installed software may be redownloaded from Nintendo eShop after the transfer, but do not count on a specific title being available: check its availability for your title and region before relying on a redownload.
Transfer timing and another attempt
Nintendo’s published overview says there is a seven-day wait before another system transfer can be attempted. Its wireless instructions say a transfer may take over four hours; that is a possible duration, not a guaranteed completion time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Moving your account is not giving it to someone else
A system transfer is for moving an NNID between compatible hardware for the account holder. Nintendo states that neither an NNID nor a Nintendo Account can be transferred or sold to another person. Buying or selling a used 3DS does not, by itself, transfer the previous owner’s account to the buyer.
