To move progress to another Switch, use Nintendo’s nearby save-data transfer. That process moves the file and removes it from the original console; it is not a backup. A target file can also be overwritten, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered.
Choose the right save operation first
There are four different actions that are easy to confuse. Your choice determines whether your old adventure remains available and whether the operation can be undone.

Deleting or archiving the game application is a separate operation. It does not, by itself, remove the save data.

Start a new game without deleting your old one
Use an empty in-game file
- Launch Link’s Awakening and reach the player-select screen.
- Choose an empty slot.
- Enter the character name when prompted.
- Confirm the name. The new adventure begins.
This is the safest way to replay the game on the same user profile because the original populated slot is left untouched. The game’s file list, rather than the Nintendo Switch software-management screen, controls which adventure you open.

When every slot is occupied
If there is no empty slot, select the file you are willing to remove and choose Delete. The game displays a button-hold confirmation; hold the buttons shown on screen for three seconds. Deletion is irreversible, so check the file’s name and progress before completing that confirmation. Do not delete a file merely because you plan to start over later: the game does not provide a recovery step for a deleted file.
Keep old progress in a separate Switch user profile
A second user profile is useful when you want an independent set of Link’s Awakening saves rather than another file in the same in-game list. Nintendo’s general rule is that save data is associated with each user account, so a separate profile normally gives that profile its own title data. This is a practical application of Nintendo’s account-level save rule, not a Link’s Awakening-specific profile tutorial.
- Use the existing profile for the adventure you want to preserve.
- Create or select the additional Switch user profile before launching the game for the new run.
- On that profile, Link’s Awakening uses its own player-select files.
- When switching between adventures, start the software under the profile that owns the intended save.
Choose this approach when the files need to remain independent. It requires extra user setup and means you must remember which profile contains which progress. If you only need one additional run, an empty slot is quicker.

Transfer a Link’s Awakening save to another Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer is the relevant procedure when both consoles are available. It requires internet access on both systems and that the consoles be nearby. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for this nearby transfer.
Prepare both consoles
- Have the source Switch, which currently holds the save, and the target Switch, which will receive it, available at the same time.
- Connect both consoles to the internet.
- Keep them close enough to complete Nintendo’s nearby transfer process.
- Open the same software’s save-management transfer menus on the appropriate console; do not use the game’s in-game Delete command for this task.
- Check the target first. If it already has Link’s Awakening save data for the same software, decide whether that target file must be retained before you continue.
Send the file from the source console
- On the source Switch, open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select the Link’s Awakening save and identify the receiving console.
Receive it on the target console
- On the target Switch, open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Receive Save Data.
- Complete the prompts on both consoles and wait for the transfer to finish before closing the settings screens or powering down either system.
The critical distinction is that Nintendo describes this as a move, not a copy: “Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” After completion, launch Link’s Awakening on the target profile and verify that the expected adventure appears before making any further changes.

What if the destination already has a save?
During the transfer, Nintendo allows you to cancel or overwrite an existing save for the same software on the target. Cancel if the target file contains progress you still need. Choose overwrite only after confirming that the target data is expendable. Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered.
There are therefore two separate points of no return:
- The source file disappears when the send operation completes.
- The target’s previous file disappears if you approve an overwrite.
Do not treat the source console as a safety copy after sending. If you need both consoles to retain playable progress, the nearby transfer is not the right way to duplicate a save.
Delete one Link’s Awakening file from the game
Use the in-game file controls when you want to remove a single populated adventure while leaving other files for the title available.
- Open Link’s Awakening and go to the player-select screen.
- Select the specific file to remove.
- Choose Delete.
- Hold the buttons shown on screen for three seconds.
- Wait for the file list to confirm the slot is empty before starting another game in it.
Only perform the three-second confirmation after checking that you selected the intended file. The deletion cannot be undone through the game.

Delete all save data for the title or user
Use the Switch system menu when you want to erase the complete Link’s Awakening save set rather than one file.

- Choose Data Management.
- Choose Delete Save Data.
- Select The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
- Choose the relevant user, or choose Delete Save Data for this Software when that option is presented.
- Review the warning and confirm only if every selected save should be removed.
Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “Once deleted, save data cannot be recovered.” This command concerns save data, not the installed game. Removing or archiving downloaded software does not substitute for this step and does not itself erase the saves.
Why a microSD card cannot preserve the save
Link’s Awakening save data is stored in the Switch’s internal system memory. Nintendo says save data cannot be saved or moved to a microSD card. Copying the game application to a card, archiving it, or moving downloadable software therefore does not create a restorable save backup.
Use the supported nearby-console transfer when you need to move progress. For a replay on the same console, use an empty in-game slot or another user profile instead of trying to export the save to removable storage.
Decision guide for common situations
“I want to replay the game but keep my finished adventure.”
Choose an empty file on the player-select screen. If no empty file exists, create a separate user profile rather than deleting the completed file.

“I want my progress on a replacement or second Switch.”
Use Send Save Data to Another Console on the original system and Receive Save Data on the other one. Plan for the source file to be removed after sending.
“The new Switch already has a different Link’s Awakening save.”
Stop at the overwrite prompt. Cancel if that destination progress matters; approve overwrite only when you accept permanent loss of the target file.
“I want to wipe the title and start completely fresh.”
Use System Settings > Data Management > Delete Save Data, select Link’s Awakening, and choose the user or the software-wide deletion option. This removes the title’s save data rather than merely uninstalling the game.
“I deleted or archived the software and expected the save to disappear.”
Software management and save management are separate. Reinstalling or reopening the game does not turn an archive operation into a save deletion; use the dedicated Delete Save Data menu if erasure is actually intended.

Pre-transfer safety checklist
- Identify which console is the source and which is the target.
- Confirm both systems have internet access and are nearby.
- Open Link’s Awakening on the source beforehand if you need to verify the file you are moving.
- Inspect the target for an existing save before approving any overwrite.
- Remember that nearby transfer is a move, not a duplicate.
- Do not rely on a microSD card as a save backup.
- Do not power off either console until the transfer screens report completion.
- After receiving the file, launch the game on the target and verify the expected progress.
Frequently misunderstood points
Does starting a new file automatically delete the old one?
No. Selecting an empty slot creates the new run. A populated slot is removed only when you deliberately choose Delete and complete the three-second button-hold confirmation.

Does nearby transfer leave the original save behind?
No. Nintendo’s transfer instructions state that the save file is deleted from the source once it is sent.
Can Nintendo recover an overwritten or deleted file?
Nintendo states that overwritten target data and deleted save data cannot be recovered. Treat both confirmations as permanent.
Is Nintendo Switch Online required for this nearby transfer?
No. Nintendo’s nearby-console save-data transfer does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, although both consoles need internet access and must be nearby.
Can I back up Link’s Awakening to a microSD card?
No. The save resides in internal system memory and cannot be copied or moved to a microSD card.
