If you are moving your entire Nintendo Switch setup, use Nintendo’s System Transfer during the initial Nintendo Switch 2 setup. It moves eligible digital games, save data, linked Nintendo Accounts and settings, with digital games redownloaded after the transfer. If you only need your The Midnight Walk save, use Nintendo’s nearby save-transfer tool instead. That route does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it deletes the sent save from the old console and can overwrite a save on the Switch 2.
Choose the right transfer route first
Your choice depends on whether you are replacing the whole console or moving one game.

For a new Switch 2 that has not been configured yet, the full System Transfer is the broadest option. Nintendo describes it as transferring purchased digital games along with save data to Switch 2, with digital games automatically redownloaded afterward. If you have already completed setup or want to leave other users and games alone, the nearby tool is more narrowly targeted.
What you should know about The Midnight Walk
Nintendo lists The Midnight Walk as a Nintendo Switch 2 game from Fast Travel Games, released March 26, 2026. Nintendo’s official listings give the download size as approximately 14.6–14.7 GB. The listing also indicates Save Data Cloud support, so a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for cloud backup of the game.

Storage and save transfer are separate issues. A transferred save does not install the game for you. After a System Transfer, Nintendo says digital games are automatically redownloaded; for a standalone nearby save transfer, make sure the software is available on the target console before you expect to load the moved save. If the Switch 2 needs more space for the roughly 14.6–14.7 GB download, Nintendo’s eShop identifies microSD Express cards as the compatible expandable-storage format for Switch 2.
Prepare both consoles before moving anything
Do these checks before opening either transfer menu. They prevent the most consequential mistakes: moving the wrong user, running out of storage, or deleting the only local copy of a save.
- Charge both systems. Keep the old Switch and Switch 2 on reliable power for the whole operation. A transfer should not be interrupted because a battery runs down.
- Install the latest system update. The source console must have the latest update for nearby save transfer. Updating both consoles gives the transfer flow the same current software environment.
- Identify the owning Nintendo Account. Confirm which Nintendo Account is associated with the user that owns the The Midnight Walk save. For a full migration, Nintendo requires at least one source user linked to a Nintendo Account. On the target console, make sure that same account can be used by the receiving user.
- Decide between complete and single-save migration. Choose System Transfer if the goal is a broad move of accounts, settings, digital games and saves. Choose nearby transfer if only the The Midnight Walk save should move.
- Check Switch 2 storage. Reserve approximately 14.6–14.7 GB for the game download, based on Nintendo’s listings, plus room for system data and anything else you plan to install. Use a compatible microSD Express card if internal space is insufficient.
- Check cloud protection. Because The Midnight Walk supports Save Data Cloud, verify that your Nintendo Switch Online membership is active and that the relevant save has uploaded before using a destructive local transfer. Cloud availability does not remove the need to follow the transfer prompts carefully.
- Keep both consoles accessible. Nearby transfer requires the systems to be close to each other and connected to the internet. Do not put the old console away until you have verified the save on Switch 2.
Option 1: Use System Transfer during Switch 2 setup
Use this path when Switch 2 is being configured as the replacement for your old console. Nintendo’s official Switch 2 transfer guide says the feature can move purchased digital games, save data, linked Nintendo Accounts and settings. The target console’s initial setup is the safest time to complete this migration because the server-based transfer is tied to that setup flow.

What the full transfer covers
- Eligible digital games purchased on Nintendo Switch, which Nintendo says are automatically redownloaded after the transfer.
- Save data associated with the transferred users and software, where supported by Nintendo’s transfer process.
- Linked Nintendo Accounts and console settings included by Nintendo’s System Transfer feature.
The guide does not mean every possible item on an old console is copied byte-for-byte. Follow the on-screen list of transferable content and review which user accounts are selected before confirming.
Step-by-step System Transfer
- Start Switch 2’s initial setup. Keep the old Switch available and connect the consoles to the internet when the setup flow requests it.
- Select the System Transfer option. Choose the setup path for moving data from a Nintendo Switch console rather than configuring the Switch 2 as an entirely new system.
- Prepare the source console. Wake the old Switch, confirm that the user containing your The Midnight Walk save is linked to a Nintendo Account, and follow the prompts shown on both consoles.
- Authenticate the required account. Use the Nintendo Account that owns the relevant software or save when the transfer asks you to identify the source user. Do not select a different local profile simply because its name looks similar.
- Review the transfer summary. Confirm that the intended users, digital purchases, saves and settings are included. This is the point to stop if the account or console shown is not the one you intend to migrate.
- Start the transfer and keep both consoles connected. Do not power off either system or intentionally disconnect the internet while the migration is running.
- Allow digital games to redownload. Nintendo says purchased digital games are automatically redownloaded after System Transfer. The transfer itself and the game download are separate phases, so the game may not be immediately playable until its download completes.
- Open The Midnight Walk on Switch 2. After the game is installed, select the transferred user and check that the expected save appears before beginning a new game.
When System Transfer is not the best choice
Do not use the full migration merely to move one save if you want to preserve a different setup on Switch 2. System Transfer is designed for a console move, not for selecting one isolated file while leaving every other account and setting untouched. In that situation, finish setup and use the nearby save-transfer procedure below.
Option 2: Transfer only The Midnight Walk save nearby
Nintendo’s nearby-transfer instructions support Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED models for compatible software. Nintendo Switch Online is not required. Both consoles must be present, near each other and connected to the internet. Unlike a cloud copy, this operation is a move: Nintendo explicitly warns that the save file is deleted from the sending console once it is sent.

Send the save from the old Switch
- Place the consoles near each other and connect both to the internet. Leave the Switch 2 powered on so it can receive the file immediately.
- Update the source console. On the old Switch, install the latest system update before opening the transfer menu.
- Open the transfer tool. Go to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose the sending command. Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Select the correct user. Choose the local user that contains your The Midnight Walk progress.
- Select the software save. Pick The Midnight Walk from the compatible software list, then choose Next and OK when the source console asks you to confirm.
- Pause before final confirmation if anything looks wrong. Check the game title and user one more time. Once the send is completed, the source copy is removed unless you have another backup.
Receive the save on Switch 2
- Open the same menu on Switch 2. Go to System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose Receive Save Data. Accept the receiving prompts so Switch 2 can establish the nearby transfer.
- Check for an existing target save. If Switch 2 already has a The Midnight Walk save, stop and decide which version you need. Nintendo warns that an overwritten target save cannot be recovered.
- Accept only after reviewing the overwrite warning. Continue when you are certain the incoming save should replace the target copy.
- Wait for completion on both screens. Keep the consoles powered and connected until the transfer reports that it has finished.
- Launch the game with the receiving user. Open The Midnight Walk and verify the expected progress before deleting, resetting or selling the old console.
Protect yourself from irreversible mistakes
The source save is deleted
Nearby transfer does not create a duplicate. Nintendo’s support wording is explicit: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” Treat the final send confirmation as irreversible for the local source file. A Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup for supported software provides a separate recovery path, but only when membership is active and the save has actually uploaded.
The target save may be overwritten
If Switch 2 already contains a save for the same software, do not accept the receive prompt automatically. First determine whether the old or new progress is the one you want. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered. If you are unsure, cancel the nearby transfer and verify your cloud backup or other copy before trying again.
Account selection matters
Save data is associated with a user profile. Selecting the wrong local user can make a successful transfer appear to have failed because the game is being opened under a profile that does not contain the moved progress. Use the same Nintendo Account-linked user identified during preparation and confirm the profile at the game’s start screen.
Cloud backup: useful safety net, not a substitute for checking
Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support for The Midnight Walk. Nintendo Switch Online is required for cloud backup. Before a destructive nearby transfer, open the game’s save-data backup controls and confirm that the latest progress has uploaded under the correct user. The membership requirement applies to the cloud service; Nintendo’s nearby-transfer instructions do not require Nintendo Switch Online.
Cloud backup is especially useful if the target already has a save you might accidentally overwrite or if you cannot complete the physical-console move immediately. It does not change the nearby-transfer warning: the local source file is still deleted after sending, so verify the backup status first rather than assuming that cloud support means every recent action is already stored online.

Storage and installation checks for Switch 2
Nintendo’s listings put The Midnight Walk at about 14.6–14.7 GB. The range reflects the figures shown on Nintendo’s official game and eShop listings; it is not a guarantee of the exact free space remaining after installation. Check available space on Switch 2 before starting the download.

- Expandable storage: Nintendo’s eShop says Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards when additional storage is needed. Use that format rather than assuming any older card will provide the required compatibility.
- Transfer versus download: A save file is separate from the game installation. Moving the save does not remove the need to install or redownload the software on Switch 2.
- Post-transfer timing: With System Transfer, Nintendo says digital games are automatically redownloaded. Wait for The Midnight Walk to finish installing before judging whether the save arrived.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The transfer option is missing
Check that you are in System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data, not a different data-management submenu. For nearby transfer, update the source console and keep both systems connected to the internet. If you are in the middle of Switch 2 setup, return to the System Transfer option rather than trying to send a single save from an unrelated setup screen.
The game is not listed as transferable
Confirm that you selected the user who owns the save and that the software is installed or recognized on the source console. Nearby transfer applies to compatible software; Nintendo’s instructions do not promise that every title can use the feature. For The Midnight Walk, use the official listing and the game’s Save Data Cloud support as confirmation that the title is supported for the relevant Nintendo services.
The save appears missing after transfer
Open the game under the receiving user, not a different profile. If you used System Transfer, allow the digital game to redownload and finish installing before testing. If you used nearby transfer, confirm that the receive step completed on Switch 2 and that you did not cancel at the overwrite warning.
You are asked to overwrite an existing save
Stop unless you have deliberately chosen the incoming file. Nintendo states that overwritten save data cannot be recovered. Use the available cloud backup for the supported game to protect the version you may need, then restart the receive process only after deciding which progress should remain.
The old console still shows no save
That is expected after a completed nearby send: Nintendo deletes the source file rather than leaving a copy. Check the target console and, if necessary, the Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup associated with the correct user. Do not repeat the send from the old console expecting it to retain the original.
There is not enough space for the game
Free space for the approximately 14.6–14.7 GB download, remove or archive unneeded software, or add a microSD Express card compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Storage expansion addresses installation capacity; it does not alter the save-transfer rules.
Final verification before you start playing
- Confirm that The Midnight Walk is installed on Switch 2 or that its redownload is complete.
- Launch it with the Nintendo Account-linked user whose save you transferred.
- Check for your expected progress, not merely the presence of the game icon.
- If you used nearby transfer, verify the target save before wiping, trading in or resetting the old console.
- Keep Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup active for this supported title if you want an additional recovery copy.
For a complete move, Nintendo’s System Transfer during initial setup is the appropriate path. For one save, the nearby tool is faster and narrower, but its source deletion and overwrite warnings make the pre-transfer backup and final verification essential.
