If your Atari 800XL powers on but shows no picture, start with the TV or monitor input and the cable, then test the other video output if you can. A blank screen alone does not identify a failed chip: Atari’s service checklist includes several possible power, cable, clock-circuit, and IC faults. Work through the external checks before opening the computer.
1. Check the display input and cable
Confirm that the television or monitor is switched to the input connected to the Atari. Reseat the cable at both ends and look for visible damage. These reversible checks are a sensible first step, as recommended by a secondary Atari troubleshooting guide.

If you are using the RF connection, make sure the television is set up to receive that signal. If you are using the monitor jack, confirm that the display and cable are compatible with the signal you are testing. A wrong input or faulty cable can look like a computer fault.

2. Try the other video output
The 800XL provides two output paths: RF for a television and a 5-pin DIN monitor jack. Atari’s service documentation describes the monitor jack as carrying composite video, composite luminance, and audio.

- Using the monitor jack now: Try RF if you have suitable television equipment.
For a monitor-output test, verify the cable pinout and the display’s compatibility; a 5-pin DIN plug alone does not establish that a cable is wired correctly for the 800XL. If one output works and the other does not, that narrows the problem to a path worth investigating, but it does not by itself prove which component has failed. If neither produces a picture, continue with the power and symptom checks.
3. Check the power light and what the display shows
If the power light is off
Before opening the case, check that the external supply is connected, the connection is secure, and the power switch is on. Atari’s symptom checklist includes the power LED, power supply, and cables among possible causes of a missing power light.

Atari specifies an external supply rated at +5 VDC ±2%, with a maximum current of 1.2 A. This is not a recommendation to try any supply with a similar-looking plug: a substitute must meet the 800XL’s electrical requirements and match the specific unit’s connector. If you cannot verify that, do not connect it.
If the power light is on but the screen is blank, black, or grey
A lit power light does not establish that the computer is starting normally. Atari’s service checklist associates black or grey screens with multiple possibilities, including the power supply, a damaged RF cable, open or shorted components on supply rails, shorted integrated circuits, and clock-circuit components. The same appearance can therefore have different causes; do not treat it as proof that a particular chip has failed.

If you see snow, color, or another partial signal
Note exactly what appears and whether it changes when you switch output paths. A visible but unusable signal is useful evidence that differs from total darkness, but it still does not identify a failed component. Record the result for each output rather than guessing from the screen appearance alone.
4. Run the built-in self-test only when you can see the menu
- Remove any cartridge.
- Hold OPTION while powering on the 800XL.
- If the self-test menu appears, use SELECT and START to choose a test.
Atari documents memory testing for RAM, ROM, and ANTIC; an audio/visual test involving ANTIC, GTIA, and POKEY; and keyboard testing. The self-test is useful only if a picture appears and you can see and operate its menu. With a completely blank screen, you cannot use it to select a test, so it cannot resolve every no-picture fault.

5. Decide whether to stop or seek board-level diagnosis
If the display, inputs, cables, and power connection check out but neither output shows a picture, the fault may require internal electrical diagnosis. Atari’s field service manual is a technician reference: it contains schematics, symptom diagnosis, and test procedures, rather than a basis for replacing parts by appearance. Its fault categories overlap, so blind chip swapping risks replacing working parts without finding the cause.
- Stop if you cannot safely make the measurements or interpret the service procedure.
- If pursuing repair, identify the board revision and use the schematic appropriate to the unit; Atari’s preserved documentation notes regional schematic additions.
- Do not infer an individual component failure from a blank screen. Diagnosis requires observations and testing on the particular computer.
The manufacturer’s service documentation is Atari, Inc.’s 800XL Field Service Manual, Rev. 02 (1985). It is intended for service technicians. Its documented fault list helps explain what may be involved, but it cannot determine which fault is present in an untested 800XL.
