The fastest way to fix an FPGA console is to isolate one link at a time: identify the exact console and firmware, describe whether the failure affects the menu or only a game/core, test the controller independently, connect video directly to the display, verify power and cables, and only then change platform-specific settings. A Super Nt, Analogue Pocket, Mega Sg, and MiSTer may all use HDMI and USB, but their menus, firmware procedures, controller interfaces, and audio paths are not interchangeable.
Begin with evidence rather than assumptions. A black screen in one MiSTer core is a different problem from a Super Nt that never reaches its menu; missing sound with a stable picture points to a transport or receiver setting, while an unresponsive controller may be isolated without touching the video chain. Keeping those cases separate prevents unnecessary firmware changes and avoids buying hardware that cannot address the failed link.

Start by recording the setup and symptom
Write down the information below before changing anything. It prevents a working setting from being lost and makes it possible to identify whether a change actually helped.

- Console and revision: record the product name, hardware revision if known, and whether an accessory board, dock, cartridge adapter, or expansion is attached.
- Software state: note the firmware version, MiSTer distribution/core version, and the date of the last update.
- Exact symptom: distinguish “no video,” an intermittent picture, a black screen in one core, missing HDMI audio, incorrect button mapping, failure to pair, or input lag. Say whether the main menu works.
- Signal chain: list the display, HDMI cable, AV receiver, switch, scaler, dock, capture device, or direct-video adapter between the console and screen.
- Controller path: identify wired USB, Bluetooth, a Retro Receiver, an original-controller adapter, or an IO-board connection. Record whether another controller behaves differently.
- Recent changes: include a firmware update, new television, moved cable, changed INI file, new core, or replacement power supply.
Also note when the fault appears: at power-on, after selecting a game, after waking the display, or only after changing cores. Record whether a reboot clears it and whether the symptom follows a particular cartridge, controller, cable, or display input. These observations are more useful than a general report that the console is “laggy” or “broken.”

Do not apply a MiSTer setting to an Analogue product merely because both use FPGA technology. Use each platform’s own manual and support documentation after the basic isolation tests.
Use a controlled isolation sequence
- Reproduce the failure in the simplest state. Remove optional accessories and determine whether the menu itself is affected. For MiSTer, test with no core loaded before testing a specific core.
- Change one variable. Swap only the HDMI cable, only the controller, or only the display input. Record the result instead of changing several settings together.
- Bypass intermediate equipment. Connect the console directly to the television or monitor. If that works, restore the receiver, switch, scaler, or dock one device at a time.
- Verify power. Use the supply specified for the model. For Super Nt video troubleshooting, Analogue specifically recommends using the included power supply and trying another outlet.
- Separate input from output. A controller that fails while the picture is stable is a different investigation from a black screen with working input.
- Restore a known-good configuration. If an INI or core setting change makes the display worse, return to the previous value before trying another option.
Take a baseline photograph of cable connections and, for MiSTer, keep a copy of the relevant INI file. If a setting change removes the picture or makes the OSD inaccessible, you can restore the prior values instead of guessing which edit caused the problem. A known-good spare HDMI cable and controller are useful reference tools, but a successful swap identifies the failing path; it does not automatically prove that the swapped part is the only defect.
“My controller does not respond, pair reliably, or map correctly”
Super Nt and SN30 controllers
For a Super Nt, fully charge the SN30 before diagnosing pairing. During Retro Receiver troubleshooting, pair only one controller at a time. A second powered controller can make it unclear which device is connected. Install the latest receiver firmware using the current instructions for that receiver, then repeat pairing with the other controllers switched off.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Work from the simplest observation: does the controller operate the console menu, or does it fail before a game starts? If the menu responds but a game has wrong buttons, the receiver link is probably established and the remaining issue is mapping or the game’s expected layout. If no menu input is recognized, repeat the charge, one-at-a-time pairing, and receiver-firmware checks before changing video settings.
If a known-compatible controller works immediately, that is useful isolation evidence, but it does not prove which part of the failed path is defective. The original controller, its battery, the receiver, the console port, or stored pairing information may still be responsible.
MiSTer USB controllers
Connect the controller with no core loaded and configure it from MiSTer’s main menu. Then launch the affected core and open its on-screen display (OSD) if that core requires additional mapping. MiSTer’s FAQ notes that devices with different VendorID/ProductID values can require separate configuration; swapping between two apparently similar controllers can therefore produce different mappings.
Test the controller in the menu first. If it works there but not in one core, treat the issue as a core-specific mapping or device-profile problem rather than immediately replacing the controller. Reconfigure the new device in that core’s OSD instead of assuming that a mapping saved for another controller will transfer.

A wired USB pad removes wireless pairing and battery state from the test. It is therefore a useful diagnostic reference even if you normally prefer wireless play. Conversely, a wireless pad that works in the menu but drops out in play should be tested for charge level and receiver placement before you conclude that the core is at fault.
Original controllers through MiSTer adapters
MiSTer supports many USB adapters for original console controllers. The FAQ also describes direct connection through an IO board User port using SNAC. Compatibility depends on the controller family, adapter, core, and the particular connection method. Confirm that the adapter is supported by the core you are running; an adapter that works for one system is not automatically supported by another.
Do not treat an adapter as a universal translator. A controller can be electrically detected yet still need a core-specific mapping, and a direct SNAC setup has different IO-board and core requirements from a generic USB adapter. Keep the original controller, adapter, and core together when reporting a fault so support can reproduce the same combination.
Choose a replacement only after isolation
| Option | Advantages | Things to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB controller | No pairing step and a direct fit for MiSTer’s USB ports. | Button layout, cable condition, core mapping, and the device’s VendorID/ProductID. |
| Wireless controller with receiver | Less cable clutter and a familiar console-style setup. | Charge level, one-at-a-time pairing, receiver firmware, and receiver compatibility with the console. |
| Original controller plus USB adapter | Preserves the original shell and feel. | Controller family, adapter firmware, supported core, and any required remapping. |
| Original controller through SNAC | Direct IO-board connection for compatible MiSTer setups. | Required IO hardware, core support, and the correct User-port wiring. |
A spare USB game controller for MiSTer is a diagnostic reference, not a guaranteed repair. Choose one for the cores you actually use, the desired button layout, wired or wireless operation, and any adapter requirement. Verify current model compatibility before purchasing; “works with USB” does not promise identical mappings or support in every core.

Super Nt: follow the documented HDMI sequence
Analogue’s Super Nt troubleshooting guide assumes the system is connected by HDMI to a television that is switched on. Perform these checks in order:
- Confirm that the Super Nt is on current firmware.
- Try a different HDMI cable. A spare cable is useful as a test; it is not proof that the original cable is bad until the result changes.
- Connect the Super Nt directly to the television, bypassing an AV receiver or other intermediary.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and verify that the television is set to the input being used. Analogue’s wording is: “Make sure your TV is in the right mode (HDMI 1, HDMI 2 etc).”
- Try another power outlet and use the included power supply.
If direct connection restores the picture, reconnect the receiver, switch, or other device individually. The failure may be an HDMI-handshake or compatibility issue in the intermediate equipment rather than a console failure. If the picture remains absent on a direct connection with the included supply, preserve the exact firmware, display, cable, and input details for a support request.
MiSTer: one core can fail while others work
When the MiSTer menu and other cores display correctly but one core produces a black screen, the FAQ suggests trying vsync_adjust=0. The purpose is diagnostic: the display may not support the refresh rate selected by that core. It is not a universal fix, and changing it can affect timing or compatibility elsewhere.

First confirm that the failure is limited to that core and that the same display path shows the main menu. If only one core is affected, avoid repeatedly swapping hardware; test the core’s configuration and refresh-rate behavior instead. If every core and the menu fail, return to the physical HDMI, power, input-selection, and intermediary checks.
Recommended Free Tools
MiSTer’s INI settings also include controls for vertical scaling (vscale_mode and vscale_border), HDMI color range (hdmi_limited), and direct_video. Change one value at a time and keep a copy of the previous configuration. direct_video is supported only with certain adapter chipsets, so enabling it on an unsupported path will not create an analog signal. A color-range mismatch usually looks like incorrect blacks or washed-out contrast, not a complete loss of video; do not use it as the first response to a blank screen.
Compare the display paths
| Path | What it tests | What a changed result means |
|---|---|---|
| Console → TV/monitor by HDMI | Console output, cable, display input, and power with the fewest variables. | A working direct path points toward an intermediary or its handshake. |
| Console → AV receiver/switch/scaler → display | The complete normal setup. | Failure only here implicates the added device, its input selection, or compatibility. |
| MiSTer → direct-video adapter → compatible display | Alternate video transport. | Requires a supported adapter chipset and separate configuration from HDMI. |
Add intermediate devices back in the same order every time. A receiver that works with another source is not automatically compatible with every FPGA timing mode, and a scaler that accepts a menu signal may still reject a particular core refresh rate.
“The picture works, but HDMI audio is missing or wrong”
Check MiSTer’s transport mode
MiSTer’s INI documentation states that dvi_mode enables DVI mode over the HDMI connection and disables audio transmission over HDMI. If video is present but HDMI sound is absent, check this setting before replacing the cable or console. Turn off DVI mode only after saving the previous value and confirming that the display chain is intended to carry HDMI audio.
MiSTer documents HDMI audio at 48 kHz by default and provides an optional 96 kHz mode. The higher rate can help with systems that use unusual sampling rates, but it is not a first-line change for every audio complaint. Try it only when the symptom suggests a sampling or receiver-compatibility issue, and return to the default if the receiver becomes unstable. A receiver that accepts video but stays silent can be rejecting the selected transport or sampling mode rather than indicating a failed FPGA audio circuit.

Test the console directly on the display, then add the AV receiver, switch, scaler, or capture device back one at a time. This is a signal-path isolation method; the Super Nt documentation’s direct-TV procedure is written for video, not as a model-independent audio guarantee. Check that the display or receiver is not muted and that its selected input matches the cable under test, but do not change several console settings while making this comparison.
Do not transfer MiSTer names such as dvi_mode or its 48/96 kHz behavior to Super Nt, Pocket, or Mega Sg. For those products, use the model’s own manual to identify supported audio outputs and settings. The available support material does not establish a universal HDMI-versus-analog behavior across FPGA consoles. A question about Mega Sg stereo audio through HDMI must be answered from Mega Sg documentation, not inferred from MiSTer.

“A cartridge game fails, so the console must be broken”
On Super Nt, a cartridge-contact problem can look like a system failure while the menu and HDMI path remain healthy. Analogue identifies dirty or oxidized cartridge contacts as a common cause for the cartridge-related symptoms covered by its guide. Power the system down, clean the cartridge pins with 90% or higher rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs, allow the contacts to dry, then insert the cartridge straight and fully.
Test the same cartridge again after cleaning and, if possible, compare with another known-good cartridge. Do not scrape contacts or introduce liquid into the console. This maintenance step applies to the cited cartridge symptoms only. It is not a remedy for a controller that will not pair, a black screen in an unrelated MiSTer core, or missing HDMI audio.
Model-specific boundaries
Analogue Super Nt
Use the Super Nt guide for its firmware, included power supply, HDMI input checks, Retro Receiver pairing, SN30 charging, and cartridge-contact procedure. Its “99.9%” cartridge statement is Analogue’s product claim, not a measured failure rate for FPGA consoles generally. Keep that figure in the context of the cartridge symptoms described by Analogue rather than using it to estimate the reliability of another console.
MiSTer
Use the MiSTer main menu and core OSD for controller setup, and its INI documentation for vsync_adjust, scaling, color range, direct video, DVI mode, and audio sampling. Different USB device IDs can require separate mappings. MiSTer’s broad USB-controller compatibility still requires checking the controller’s layout, connection method, adapter, and core support.
Analogue Pocket
The Pocket support material lists troubleshooting topics for game errors, SD-card insertion, third-party power and USB-C cables, and save states, but the detailed instructions are not established here. Do not substitute Super Nt power or cable guidance for Pocket. Follow the Pocket manual and the current Pocket support page for the exact model and accessory. A USB-C cable that is suitable for another device is not automatically an approved Pocket choice.
Mega Sg
The Mega Sg support page lists firmware 4.9 dated May 4, 2023, and a manual dated December 8, 2021. Its support questions include video lag, controller lag, television compatibility, and stereo audio over HDMI, but the answers are model-specific. Verify those details in the Mega Sg documentation rather than assuming that Super Nt or MiSTer settings apply. In particular, do not promise a particular stereo or analog output behavior without checking the Mega Sg manual for the exact connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to stop changing settings
Stop and return to the last known-good configuration when a change affects several symptoms at once, makes the menu disappear, or prevents you from reaching the OSD. Reconnect only the hardware needed for the test, confirm the baseline again, and then continue with one controlled change. If the fault follows a specific cable, controller, adapter, or intermediary, replace or service that component; if it remains on a direct, known-good path with current software, document the complete setup and contact the manufacturer or project support channel for that model.

A useful support report includes the console and revision, firmware or core version, display model, cable and power supply used, every intermediary in the signal chain, controller and adapter type, exact symptom, whether the menu works, and the tests that changed the result. This gives support a reproducible case instead of a list of guesses.
Quick decision guide
- Menu and video work, controller fails: charge and pair one device at a time on Super Nt; configure the device in MiSTer’s menu and affected core OSD; then test a known-compatible controller.
- Direct HDMI works, normal chain fails: add the receiver, switch, scaler, or dock back one at a time and investigate the device that reintroduces the fault.
- Other MiSTer cores work, one is black: test
vsync_adjust=0as a display-refresh diagnostic and review that core’s configuration. - Video works but HDMI audio is silent on MiSTer: check
dvi_mode, then consider the documented 48 kHz default versus optional 96 kHz mode only when the symptom suggests a sampling issue. - Only a cartridge game fails on Super Nt: inspect and clean oxidized contacts with 90%+ rubbing alcohol and reseat the cartridge straight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Super Nt show no video output on the TV?
With the television switched on, update the Super Nt if needed, try another HDMI cable, connect directly to the TV, reseat both ends, select the correct HDMI input, try another outlet, and use the included power supply. Add an AV receiver or other intermediary back only after direct video works.
Why does my SN30 or Retro Receiver keep pairing unreliably?
Fully charge the SN30, switch off other controllers, pair only one controller at a time, and install the latest receiver firmware using the receiver maker’s current procedure. A second controller can obscure which device actually paired.
Other MiSTer cores work, but one gives me a black screen. What should I do?
Confirm that the menu and other cores still display, then try vsync_adjust=0. MiSTer’s FAQ identifies unsupported refresh rates as a possible cause. Change one setting at a time and restore the prior value if timing or compatibility gets worse.
Why does a MiSTer controller work in the menu but not in a core?
Configure it in the main menu, then open the affected core’s OSD and map it there if necessary. Different VendorID/ProductID values can require separate configurations, even for controllers that appear to be the same model.
Does MiSTer’s DVI mode disable HDMI sound?
Yes. MiSTer’s documented dvi_mode behavior disables audio transmission over HDMI. Check that setting when video is present but HDMI audio is missing.
Should I change MiSTer HDMI audio from 48 kHz to 96 kHz?
MiSTer uses 48 kHz by default and offers 96 kHz for systems with unusual sampling rates. Treat 96 kHz as a targeted compatibility test, not a first step for every audio complaint, and return to the default if the receiver becomes unstable.
Can I use Super Nt troubleshooting steps on Pocket or Mega Sg?
Only use generic isolation ideas such as testing one variable and bypassing an intermediary. Power supplies, USB-C cables, firmware procedures, audio settings, and menu paths are model-specific; consult the Pocket or Mega Sg documentation for those details.
Can cleaning a Super Nt cartridge fix a black screen?
Cleaning is intended for cartridge-contact symptoms. Power down, use 90% or higher rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs on the cartridge pins, let them dry, and reseat the cartridge straight and fully. It does not address controller pairing, an unrelated MiSTer core, or missing HDMI audio.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the path, not the label. Establish whether the menu works, test controllers separately, connect video directly, verify the model’s power and cable requirements, and change one platform-specific setting at a time. Super Nt, Pocket, Mega Sg, and MiSTer share FPGA technology but not identical firmware, controller, video, or audio behavior.
