Most post-modding Steam Deck failures can be narrowed down without reinstalling the game or changing many settings at once. First install SteamOS updates, restart, and temporarily close third-party desktop applications. Then determine whether the failure belongs to one game, the mod manager or launcher, or several Steam games. Test the unmodded game, isolate the newest mod, and only then test a different Proton version as a reversible change.
Keep a record of the original configuration and every change. A controlled sequence tells you whether you are dealing with a mod conflict, a tool-specific problem, a game-rendering issue, or broader system instability. If the launch still fails, collect a Proton log with PROTON_LOG=1 %command% and include the exact configuration in your support request.

Before changing anything, record the failure
Write down the game, SteamOS update status, selected compatibility tool, mod manager or loader, the last mod installed or updated, and the complete error text. For a visual problem, take a screenshot or a short recording if practical. Note whether the problem occurs in Game Mode, Desktop Mode, or both, and whether it began after a game update, SteamOS update, Proton change, or mod-manager update.

- Game and edition: record the title, branch or edition, and whether the installation is the Steam Linux build or a Windows build running through Proton.
- Launch path: note whether you start the game directly from Steam, through a loader, or through a mod manager.
- Compatibility state: record the current Steam Play tool and any launch options.
- Recent changes: list mods added, removed, updated, or reordered, plus updates to the game or manager.
- Symptom location: identify whether the crash or visual defect appears before the game window, in the game’s launcher, during gameplay, in a manager window, or in an overlay.
Apply the reversible Steam Deck checks first
Valve’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide recommends installing available system updates and restarting for instability and app problems. Use Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install what is offered, then restart from that page or through Steam > Power > Restart. Valve’s wording is direct: “To address issues with system instability, install any available system updates … and restart your Steam Deck.”
If the game depends on software installed or running in Desktop Mode, exit or temporarily disable those third-party applications before restarting. Test again with the simplest launch path available. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that a desktop application caused the problem; it removes one variable while you establish a baseline.
- Finish all pending SteamOS updates.
- Restart the Deck rather than merely returning to the home screen.
- Close nonessential desktop applications, overlays, and launch helpers temporarily.
- Launch the affected game once with no other changes and record the result.
- If the failure remains, continue with the scope test instead of changing several compatibility settings together.
Use the failure’s scope to choose the next branch
Scope is a useful clue, not proof of a cause. Valve separates system instability from problems confined to a particular Steam application. Test another Steam game and, where it is safe to do so, test the affected title without its mods. The pattern determines what to examine next.

Run each test with the same notes you made earlier. If another game works and the unmodded version of the affected title launches, return to the mod setup. If several unrelated games fail, prioritize system-level checks and Valve support rather than repeatedly reinstalling individual mods.

Remove mods temporarily and isolate the change
Start with the most recent mod or update. Disable it without deleting files if the manager supports that operation, then launch the game. If the failure disappears, re-enable a small group at a time until the problem returns. Narrow the reproducing group one mod at a time. This binary-style process is faster and safer than removing and reinstalling the entire setup repeatedly.
Test the base game safely
Use the manager’s profile or deployment controls to create a no-mod test, or follow the game’s documented method for temporarily moving the mod files out of the load path. Keep saves and configuration backups separate from the mod files. A successful unmodded launch shows that the base game can start under the current environment; it does not prove that every mod is faulty.
Check load order and dependencies
When a small group reproduces the crash, verify that each item has the required dependency, supported game version, and documented load order. Reinstalling a mod without checking those requirements can recreate the same failure. Update the relevant mods and consult the game’s developer instructions. Larian Studios, for example, explains how to distinguish a game problem from a mod problem and advises keeping mods current in its Mod Issues guidance.
Do not transfer assumptions from Windows
A mod that works on Windows, or appears in a manager’s supported list, is not automatically compatible with Linux or Proton. SteamTinkerLaunch explicitly states that it does not guarantee mod compatibility on Linux in its troubleshooting documentation. Treat Linux/Proton support as a title- and mod-specific question. Test the smallest known-good configuration before adding optional loaders, script extenders, reshade-style tools, or overlays.

Reintroduce changes methodically
- Launch the unmodded or known-good profile and confirm the baseline.
- Enable one mod or one tightly related dependency group.
- Launch and record whether the symptom returns.
- Continue until the failing item or combination is identified.
- Leave the reproducing item disabled, update it, or seek its maintainer’s documented compatibility advice.
If the game still fails with every mod disabled, stop treating the mod list as the only suspect. Continue with compatibility-tool and game-install diagnostics while preserving the evidence from your tests.
Check Deck Verified information and Proton settings
Open the game’s Deck Verified information and read the requirements attached to its rating. The rating is a compatibility reference, not a guarantee that a particular mod, loader, or manager will work. Compare the game’s stated requirements with your launch path, input setup, text readability, and any required external account or launcher.
Use a Proton version as a controlled experiment
In the Steam library, open the game’s properties and use Properties > Compatibility to test a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. Record the original setting first, change only this one variable, and launch the game. If the result is worse, restore the original choice. Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version for some Steam app issues, while acknowledging that individual games and mod loaders can require title-specific handling.

Do not interpret one successful Proton test as a universal fix. A game update, loader, or mod may depend on a different runtime. Also be aware of the installation consequence Valve documents: forcing a Windows compatibility version can make Steam download that version if only the Linux build is installed. Allow the download to finish before judging the test, and record which build you tested.

When SteamTinkerLaunch is the launch path
If you use SteamTinkerLaunch and the game will not start through it, verify that its configured Proton version is valid and that SteamTinkerLaunch is selected as the compatibility tool in the way its documentation expects. Do not assume it belongs in the game’s launch-options field. Inspect the SteamTinkerLaunch log for a tool-specific failure, then repeat the test with the manager or launcher removed from the path so you can compare direct and managed launches. These instructions apply to SteamTinkerLaunch setups, not to every mod configuration.

First identify the interface in which the defect appears. A flicker or missing texture during gameplay is a different diagnostic problem from a frozen Mod Organizer 2 dialog or a broken launcher window. Capture a screenshot and note whether the game continues responding, whether audio continues, and whether switching between Game Mode and Desktop Mode changes the symptom.
In-game graphics or performance problems
For trouble inside the game, Valve’s troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering the graphics preset or individual settings. Change one graphics option at a time and keep a record of the original value. If the visual defect disappears after reducing a setting, reapply options individually to find the trigger; do not assume that a lower preset fixes a mod conflict.

SteamTinkerLaunch documents a specific class of Mod Organizer 2 dialog hangs and crashes in Game Mode, along with a workaround involving its Proton options and the Steam Linux Runtime. Consult the Mod Organizer 2 documentation and confirm that your symptom matches that report before applying tool-specific changes. That narrow report is not evidence that every visual glitch, every manager, or every Proton version shares the same cause.

Launcher and overlay checks
If the game itself renders correctly but its launcher or overlay is corrupted, test a direct game launch without the overlay or manager where the setup permits it. A clean direct launch points you toward the extra interface; a failure there sends you back to the game, Proton, and mod-isolation branches. Keep the test reversible and restore the original launch path after recording the result.
Understand the message “Error launching game, compatibility tool failed”
That wording is commonly used by Steam Deck players, including in a community report titled Error launching game, compatibility tool failed. It describes what Steam displayed, not a complete diagnosis. The same message can accompany a bad Proton selection, a manager that is not being invoked as expected, a missing runtime, or a change in the game’s installation. Use it as a prompt to check the launch path and compatibility configuration, not as proof that Proton itself is broken.
Return to the last known-good setting, test the base game, and compare direct and managed launches. If the title launches directly but not through the manager, focus on the manager’s configured runtime and log. If no Steam game launches, return to system updates, restart, and broader support rather than cycling through random Proton builds.
Capture a Proton log and ask for targeted help
When a Proton launch failure persists, Valve’s Proton FAQ documents the launch option PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. In the game’s Steam properties, add that exact text to Launch Options, reproduce the failure once, and locate the generated log according to Valve’s instructions. Remove the option after collecting the evidence if you do not need further logs.
A useful support report contains:
- the game and edition;
- SteamOS update state and whether the Deck was restarted;
- the selected Proton version and the original setting;
- the mod manager, loader, and active mod list or profile;
- the last change made before the failure;
- the exact error text and where the visual problem appears;
- whether the unmodded game and another Steam game launch;
- the Proton log, plus screenshots when the issue is visual.
Send that package to the appropriate audience: Valve or Steam Support for a broader Deck or Steam problem, the game publisher for a title-specific issue, or the mod-tool and mod maintainers for a reproducible configuration problem. Valve’s guide directs readers to Steam Deck discussions or Steam Support when its general checks do not resolve the issue.
Recovery rules that prevent a second failure
- Change one variable at a time. Do not update the game, switch Proton, reorder mods, and alter graphics settings in one session.
- Keep the original configuration. Record compatibility settings, launch options, and the active profile before experimenting.
- Use reversible disable operations. Prefer a manager profile or temporary disable over deleting mod files or saves.
- Retest after each change. A launch that succeeds once is not enough if the crash returns only after loading a save or entering a particular area.
- Respect title-specific instructions. A workaround documented for one manager or game should not be generalized to every Steam Deck setup.
- Stop when the evidence points elsewhere. If the clean game fails, continuing to remove mods will not test the relevant variable.
There is no reliable population-wide percentage for mod-related Steam Deck crashes, failed launches, or visual glitches. The available official and project documentation provides procedures and selected known issues, not a measured failure rate or success guarantee. Treat each diagnosis as an evidence-based narrowing process rather than a promised one-step fix.
