Those checks can point toward a wider service or route issue, a local network problem, or PC performance—but none alone proves the cause.
Start by identifying what “lag” looks like
Different symptoms call for different checks. Network latency can make actions feel delayed or cause a character to rubber-band; disconnects are another distinct symptom. Low frame rates or visual stutter, by contrast, may indicate a local rendering or performance issue. Steam’s general lag guidance discusses latency as a network concern, but it does not diagnose Dreadmyst or your PC.
- Delayed actions or rubber-banding: continue with the network and server checks below.
- Low FPS or visual stutter: treat it as a separate local performance symptom; the available Dreadmyst information does not identify a specific PC setting or component as the cause.
- Disconnects: note when they happen and whether other players disconnect at the same time.
Check whether the problem is shared
Ask party members or other players in the same area whether they see the same delay, and whether it started at roughly the same time. A shared, simultaneous pattern makes a broader service or network-route issue more plausible than a problem isolated to one PC, but it does not confirm an outage.
Then check Dreadmyst’s current official announcements for a notice that matches the timing. The developer’s June 8, 2026 Steam announcement, “Update on Dreadmyst”, said the game had not shut down and that its servers, website, and registration remained online at that time. That is a dated statement, not live uptime telemetry, so it cannot establish the service’s status now.

Dreadmyst’s official announcements also record historical launch-week server crashes and login issues, a clearer retry prompt when the server was full, and later server stability and infrastructure work. These records offer context, not evidence that a current bout of lag is server-side. See the official announcement archive for dated posts.
Compare Wi-Fi with a direct wired connection
If you play on Wi-Fi, test near the router or connect the PC directly to it with Ethernet, then compare the same in-game activity. Klei’s general network troubleshooting guide recommends a direct wired connection as a way to check whether Wi-Fi contributes to poor network performance. It is an isolation test, not a guaranteed Dreadmyst fix.

- If the delay improves on Ethernet, the local wireless link may be contributing.
- If it does not improve, Wi-Fi is less likely to be the only cause; server distance, routing, or another issue may still matter.
Consider distance and routing without guessing at a ping threshold
Geographic distance can increase response time, and Steam’s general latency guidance recommends considering server latency and location. The sources available here do not establish that Dreadmyst provides an in-game ping display, so there is no specific Dreadmyst menu or ping threshold to rely on.
The public Dreadmyst client configuration lists Address="game.dreadmyst.com" and TCP port 16383. These are configured connection details, not a ping-test instruction, a guarantee that the endpoint is reachable at this moment, or a complete list of ports to open. They do not reveal why one player is lagging. See the public client configuration.

Use the checks to narrow the possibilities

- When it happens, whether it is persistent or time-specific, and whether other players are affected at the same time.
