1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a tracked device is drifting or floating, or SteamVR reports “My virtual position is different than my actual position,” check station visibility and stability first, then recalibrate the room if the virtual floor or play-area orientation is wrong. Also check SteamVR frame timing: performance lag can feel like a tracking fault but has a different cause.
Is it tracking drift or performance lag?
Start in SteamVR: check the status of the headset, controllers, and trackers. Steam’s Vive troubleshooting guidance says a pulsing-green device icon means that device is not tracking; a gray headset display can also indicate tracking loss. These are clues to tracking trouble, not proof that a base station has failed. Steam’s Vive tracking troubleshooting guide and Index troubleshooting guidance cover device status and tracking checks.
If motion feels delayed or stuttery rather than steadily misplaced, open SteamVR’s Advanced Frame Timing. Steam says frame-timing spikes point toward CPU performance as the likely issue, rather than tracking. Check timing alongside device status before changing station positions or concluding that tracking hardware is at fault. Steam’s Index troubleshooting page explains this check.
Check base-station operation and placement
- Confirm every base station is powered on and operating, and that tracked devices can see the stations. Restart SteamVR and check device status again. If a device still shows tracking loss, continue with the device-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the room needs a new mount. Steam Vive troubleshooting.
- Check that stations are aimed toward the play area and are not blocked from tracked devices or from one another where station visibility matters. A clear view is more useful than simply having stations powered on. Steam Index Lighthouse guidance.
- Secure each station on a surface that does not move or vibrate. If you are comparing two possible locations, prefer the one with clearer visibility and a more stable mounting surface.
For an Index Lighthouse arrangement, Steam recommends placing stations at least 2 m (6.5 ft) above the floor, angled down 30–45 degrees, and no more than 5 m (16 ft) apart. Opposite corners are practical when the room allows it; aim stations toward the center of the play area. Steam notes that other arrangements can work, so treat these measurements as recommended setup guidance, not an absolute rule. Steam Support’s Index Base Station & Lighthouse Tracking guidance recommends a fresh room setup after environmental or station-position changes.

Check for reflections and obstructions
Windows, mirrors, televisions, and monitor screens can interfere with tracking in some rooms. If drift or floating continues after checking station operation and placement, temporarily cover reflective surfaces and retest. Also check that furniture or other objects do not obstruct the stations’ view of tracked devices. Steam’s Index Lighthouse tracking FAQ includes reflections among the environmental checks.
Run Room Setup for a wrong floor or play-area direction
If the tracking is stable but the virtual floor is too high or low, your play-area front is wrong, or “The orientation of my play area is not correct,” recalibrate rather than moving hardware at random. Steam says the floor position is measured during Room Setup and may change after base stations are moved. Run SteamVR Room Setup after changing the room layout or station positions; Steam also describes quick calibration under Settings > Developer > Room and Tracking. Steam’s floor-position guidance and Room Setup support describe floor and calibration steps.

Check the play area and station spacing
For room-scale play, Steam’s FAQ gives a minimum clear space of 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft) and a maximum base-station separation of 5 m (16 ft). These are Steam’s stated room-scale figures; the 5 m separation is also part of its recommended Index station arrangement. SteamVR FAQ.

If an existing position is unstable or unsuitable, Steam says base stations use standard 1/4-inch UNC mounting and lists tripods and light stands as alternatives to wall brackets. Check that a stand or bracket fits the actual station, is securely installed, and does not vibrate. A mount can improve positioning stability; it is not, by itself, a fix for drift.
