If Modern Warfare III on PC displays “The game has crashed with error code 0x1,” the code alone does not identify the cause. Activision’s support pages reviewed do not define 0x1 or confirm a specific fix. Start with Activision’s general PC crash guidance, then try the Xbox app’s Repair option only if that is where you installed the game. If the crash continues, send Activision a report with the code and crash logs.

What Modern Warfare 3 error 0x1 means

The exact message has been reported for Modern Warfare III in an Xbox app / PC Game Pass context. That establishes it as a displayed crash message, not as a diagnosis: the official Activision guidance does not say that 0x1 means a corrupted installation, graphics-driver failure, licensing problem, or anti-cheat fault. Troubleshooting should therefore focus on the platform and crash conditions rather than assuming a cause.

First identify where you installed the game—such as the Xbox app or another PC storefront—and confirm that Modern Warfare III itself is crashing, rather than a separate Call of Duty launcher component. The steps below are general diagnostics, not confirmed remedies for this particular code.

Try the lowest-risk PC checks first

Check system requirements and ventilation

Compare your PC with Activision’s Modern Warfare III PC system requirements. Activision dates that page January 17, 2024, and notes that the requirements may change, so treat its specifications as launch-era guidance rather than a guarantee of current compatibility. Also check that the PC has adequate ventilation, as Activision includes ventilation among its general crash and freeze checks.

Close background applications

Close unnecessary programs before launching the game. Activision warns that third-party applications—including input-remapping tools, overlays, and recording software—may interfere with gameplay or disrupt startup. If the crash persists, temporarily disable or exit those applications and try again. Change one category at a time where practical so you can tell whether the crash behavior changes.

Check graphics drivers

Make sure your graphics driver is a currently supported or recommended release for your GPU. Activision’s general Modern Warfare III crash and freeze guidance discusses keeping video drivers current. Do not treat any driver version listed in launch-era requirements as a current recommendation.

If you installed the game through the Xbox app

A secondary report about this error suggests trying the Windows app-repair option. This is not an official Activision fix, and the report itself said further fixes were still being sought, so regard Repair as a low-risk troubleshooting attempt rather than a guarantee.

  1. Open Windows Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features in some Windows versions).
  2. Find Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in the list, open its menu, and choose Advanced options, if available.
  3. Select Repair, then try launching the game again.

The reported path is based on a secondary article about the Xbox app / PC context, not on an Activision troubleshooting instruction. If the game is installed through a different storefront or the Repair option is unavailable, skip this step.

Check current known issues, then report a persistent crash

Activision’s Modern Warfare III known-issues page can change over time. The version updated August 7, 2026, did not identify error 0x1 in the content returned, but an absent entry does not rule out an unlisted or newly emerging problem. Check the current page for a relevant update.

If the crash continues, submit an Activision PC Crash Report. Include the exact error text and code, storefront, time and frequency of crashes, GPU, and what you were doing immediately before the failure. Activision’s form also explains how to generate an Error Log ZIP with CrashLogGenerator.exe and attach it for investigation. A detailed report gives support useful context; it does not guarantee a particular resolution.
