First determine what actually failed
“MySQL crashed” can describe several different events: the server process exited, a client connection was dropped, a proxy stopped routing traffic, the host killed the process, or a service manager restarted it so quickly that users saw only a brief outage. These cases require different fixes. Do not begin by deleting database files or changing recovery settings.

- If uptime resets, mysqld exited or was restarted.
- If uptime continues but one application reports a disconnect, investigate that client, connection pool, proxy, network path, or timeout first.
- If the command cannot connect at all, note whether the service is stopped, still starting, refusing authentication, or listening on a different socket or port.
On a systemd host, these checks provide the surrounding service context:
systemctl status mysql
journalctl -u mysql --since "2026-10-15 12:00:00" --until "2026-10-15 12:10:00"
Use the service name installed on your distribution if it differs, such as mysqld. The exact incident time matters: journal entries, kernel messages, storage errors, and coredump records are easiest to correlate when you search a narrow window.
Preserve evidence before changing configuration
Copy evidence while the failure is fresh. Configuration changes, repeated restarts, log rotation, and cleanup jobs can destroy the clues needed to identify the cause. Preserve copies rather than moving or truncating live files.
- MySQL’s error log, including the lines immediately before shutdown and during the next startup.
- Service status and journal output covering several minutes before and after the event.
- MySQL configuration files and included directories, with file permissions and ownership recorded.
- Kernel and host messages for out-of-memory kills, filesystem faults, I/O timeouts, machine-check errors, or storage resets.
- Any stack trace, assertion, signal report, or core-dump metadata.
- The exact MySQL build, distribution package, platform architecture, and relevant hardware or virtual-machine details.
Keep the original timestamps and note whether the log is local time or UTC. If the host rotates logs, retrieve the rotated file that contains the incident rather than relying only on the current one. On systemd systems, coredump records may be visible through the journal and the core image is commonly stored under /var/lib/systemd/coredump; retention, compression, and permissions vary by distribution.
Read the MySQL error log as a timeline
The error log is the primary source for a server shutdown reason. Read backward from the first startup line after the outage and forward through recovery. Look for a normal shutdown message, a signal such as segmentation fault, an assertion failure, an InnoDB recovery sequence, a table or page corruption report, or a message indicating that the operating system terminated the process.

Normal shutdown versus abnormal exit
A clean administrative stop normally leaves an orderly shutdown sequence. A sudden end of log output followed by startup recovery indicates an unexpected exit, even if no explicit “crash” line was written. A service manager can also restart mysqld after an abnormal exit, so a new process and reset uptime may be visible without a useful application-facing error.
Assertions, signals, and stack traces
Assertion text identifies an internal condition that MySQL did not expect. A signal report, backtrace, or stack trace supplies the most useful information for comparing a failure with known defects. Preserve the entire block, not only its first line: thread state, source-file references, and the last statement can distinguish a repeatable server bug from memory or storage damage.
Resource and host messages
An operating-system out-of-memory kill may appear in the kernel log rather than the MySQL log. Similar separation occurs with failed disks, filesystem remounts, hypervisor resets, and local system-library faults. Correlate the timestamp across all sources before concluding that a SQL statement caused the exit. The MySQL manual notes that some failures are specific to local libraries or hardware, so a problem that cannot be reproduced on another host deserves host-level investigation.
Run mysqld in the foreground for a controlled reproduction
When the normal service wrapper hides the useful line, reproduce the problem during a maintenance window with the server attached to a console. Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual advises: “When troubleshooting, it is usually best to run the MySQL server from the command prompt.” A foreground process keeps startup diagnostics and an immediate abort visible.
- Schedule a window and stop application traffic. Take a current backup or snapshot appropriate to your environment before deliberately reproducing a failure.
- Stop the managed service using your platform’s normal command. Do not start a second mysqld against the same data directory.
- Use the same configuration, data directory, user, and environment as the service. A different option file or operating-system user can create a misleading result.
- Start mysqld from the command prompt and capture standard output and standard error. On Windows, the manual specifically points to the
--consoleoption so messages remain visible in the command window. - Perform only the smallest action that reliably triggers the incident. Stop the reproduction if the data directory shows signs of worsening damage.
- Restore normal service management after collecting the output, and label every captured file with the server version and timestamp.
Foreground execution is diagnostic, not a permanent deployment method. Run it only with the same access controls and maintenance protections you would use for the service, and never expose a test instance to untrusted traffic.

Capture a core dump when the process aborts
A core image and backtrace can turn an unexplained process exit into a reproducible defect report. On systemd installations, a service may have a core-size limit that prevents a useful image from being written. Configure that limit in a service override rather than editing a package-owned unit file.
- Create an override for the MySQL service with
systemctl edit mysql(use the actual unit name). - Add a
[Service]section containing an appropriateLimitCorevalue for your storage and policy. An unlimited value is common for a temporary diagnostic window, but it can consume substantial disk space. - Reload unit files and restart the service so the limit applies. Record the change and remove or reduce it after the investigation.
- After a failure, inspect records with
coredumpctl list, then examine the matching entry and metadata withcoredumpctl info. The journal may contain a backtrace even when the full image was not retained.
Core retention and permissions are distribution-dependent. Restrict access because a core can contain credentials and application data. If no core is produced, check the effective unit limit, kernel core policy, available disk space, and systemd-coredump configuration before repeating the test.
Find the query that precedes the restart
For a controlled reproduction, enable the general query log temporarily. It records client statements and connection activity, so it can be noisy and can expose sensitive values. Use it only for the shortest practical interval, on a test or maintenance instance when possible, and disable it immediately after collecting the evidence.
Compare the final statements before each restart. Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual says, “About 95% of all bugs are related to a particular query.” That figure describes the relationship of bugs to queries; it is not a claim that 95% of crashes are caused by SQL or that every crash will be solved by finding one statement.
A useful isolation method is:
- Record the final several statements and their connection identifiers from each reproduction.
- Find the statement or short sequence common to every failure. Separate application retries and health checks from the statement that immediately precedes the process exit.
- Copy the smallest reproducible schema, indexes, and data to a staging instance or disposable copy. Avoid experimenting first on the only production data directory.
- Reduce the statement: remove joins, predicates, columns, or rows until the smallest form still triggers the failure.
- Test the reduced query on the same MySQL version and platform, then on a clean copy or updated maintenance release when safe. Record whether the failure follows the query, the data, or the host.
If the last query changes every time, do not assume the query log is useless. A concurrent background operation, damaged page, resource exhaustion, or nondeterministic memory fault can make different statements expose the same underlying problem. Compare timing, thread, table, and storage messages in the error log.

Use the evidence to choose the right branch
InnoDB recovery messages appear after startup
An unexpected exit normally triggers automatic InnoDB crash recovery when the server restarts. Oracle’s recovery guidance states: “To recover from an unexpected MySQL server exit, the only requirement is to restart the MySQL server.” Let that process complete and monitor the error log rather than interrupting it repeatedly. Recovery progress, redo processing, and a final ready-for-connections message indicate whether the instance completed the normal path.
Do not delete InnoDB data, redo, or system files as a first response. Removing files can turn a recoverable restart into permanent data loss and eliminates evidence needed for diagnosis.
A table or page may be corrupt
When the log identifies a table or storage page, run the appropriate check on the affected table:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
CHECK TABLE database_name.table_name;
CHECK TABLE can reveal some logical or structural problems, but it cannot detect every corruption type and a successful check does not prove that the underlying storage is healthy. Plan a logical dump and rebuild, or restore the affected data from a known-good backup, according to the engine and the failure details. Avoid running repair actions blindly on InnoDB tables; the recovery path differs from that of other storage engines.
Startup fails or assertions repeat
If normal recovery cannot start the instance, or an assertion repeats during startup, use the documented innodb_force_recovery levels only as an emergency measure. The purpose is to start far enough to dump data, not to resume ordinary production writes. Begin with the lowest level required, increase only when necessary, and treat the resulting server as read-only for extraction. Once data is secured, rebuild from a clean backup or a new instance rather than operating indefinitely with forced recovery.

The process receives a signal or aborts without a useful log
Retain the foreground output, stack trace, core metadata, exact version, platform, and a minimal reproducer. Compare the failure with known defects for that exact build and prepare a reproducible bug report if the issue persists on a clean copy. Include configuration differences and whether the same query succeeds on another host; a missing reproduction is often the difference between an actionable report and an inconclusive one.
The host shows resource or hardware errors
Correlate the crash with kernel, filesystem, storage, and memory events. An out-of-memory kill, failing volume, filesystem error, or unstable host can terminate a healthy mysqld independently of the last SQL statement. Correct the host problem and validate the restored or rebuilt instance before trusting it with production writes.
When two causes remain plausible, compare them systematically
| Diagnostic axis | Query or software defect | Storage, host, or resource failure |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Repeats when a particular statement or data shape runs | Occurs during startup, checkpointing, idle work, or unrelated workload |
| Log signature | Assertion, signal, backtrace, or statement-adjacent message | Out-of-memory kill, I/O error, filesystem fault, or machine-level event |
| Reproduction | Follows a minimal query on a clean copy | Follows one host, disk, kernel, library, or workload condition |
| Scope | One statement, connection pattern, table, or version | Multiple databases, services, or instances on the same host |
| Reversibility | May stop after avoiding the statement or upgrading the affected build | Requires host repair, data restore, dump-and-rebuild, or backup recovery |
No single axis proves causation. The strongest diagnosis combines a repeatable trigger with a matching log signature and a result that changes when the suspected factor is removed.
Recover safely when the server will not stay up
Separate “make the service start” from “return to normal operation.” If the instance starts after ordinary crash recovery, verify the error log, application reads, replication state where applicable, and backup health before declaring success. If recovery is blocked by corruption or disk failure, stop repeated restart loops and choose a controlled recovery plan.
- Protect the original data directory and preserve logs, core records, and configuration.
- Check the storage and host condition. A restore onto the same failing volume can recreate the incident.
- Restore a known-good backup to a repaired or replacement instance when the original cannot be trusted.
- Apply binary logs after the backup’s recovery point, validating order and gaps before opening the restored service to writes.
- If forced recovery is the only way to start, use it only long enough to dump readable data. Build a clean instance from the dump and verified backup rather than continuing with the emergency setting.
- Reproduce the trigger on the clean instance before reconnecting the original workload. Otherwise the same query or host fault may crash the replacement.
Document what data was recovered, what transactions were covered by the backup and binary logs, and which tables or pages could not be read. A service that starts is not automatically a consistent or complete recovery.
Common mistakes that make an investigation harder
- Assuming every disconnect is a crash: verify uptime and process state before editing MySQL settings.
- Restarting repeatedly without copying logs: later startups can rotate or obscure the original shutdown evidence.
- Enabling the general log indefinitely: it adds volume and may record sensitive data; use a bounded reproduction.
- Deleting InnoDB files: this can destroy recovery material and worsen corruption.
- Running a different binary or option file in the foreground: the result then describes a different server than the one that failed.
- Using forced recovery as a permanent fix: it is an extraction aid, not a normal operating mode.
- Ignoring the host: kernel, storage, memory, and filesystem evidence may explain an empty MySQL log.
- Reporting only “it crashed”: include exact version, platform, timestamp, last statements, logs, stack trace, and reproduction steps.
A practical incident checklist
- Confirm whether mysqld exited by checking
mysqladmin versionand polling withmysqladmin -i 5 status. - Record the client error, uptime before and after, server version, platform, and exact incident time.
- Copy the error log, service journal, configuration, kernel messages, and any coredump information.
- Check whether the service manager restarted mysqld and whether normal InnoDB crash recovery completed.
- Correlate storage, filesystem, memory, and host events with the same timestamp.
- In a controlled window, reproduce in the foreground; use
--consoleon Windows. - Enable the general query log only for that reproduction and isolate the smallest triggering statement.
- For suspected corruption, run
CHECK TABLE, then plan a dump/rebuild or restore rather than deleting files. - For blocked startup, use
innodb_force_recoveryonly to extract data and rebuild from a clean source. - Retest on a clean copy and preserve a complete, versioned incident record.
What a useful final diagnosis looks like
A defensible diagnosis states the failure boundary, trigger, evidence, and remedy in one chain: for example, “mysqld uptime reset at 12:04:17; the error log records an assertion in build X; the same reduced query reproduces it on a staging copy; avoiding that statement or moving to a fixed build stops the exit.” A host diagnosis might instead say, “multiple services lost access at the same time; the kernel recorded an out-of-memory kill; no query reproduces the event on a healthy host.”
