If a PC game stops launching after DRM was removed, the timing alone does not prove the change caused the failure. First identify where the launch stops and record the exact error; then check the game’s requirements, installed files, security software, system updates and possible software conflicts. Use legitimate game files and the platform or publisher’s support rather than making further unverified changes.
Start by identifying what fails
Steam notes that games may fail to launch for many reasons across different hardware and software configurations. A game that will not start after DRM removal may have missing or altered files, a required dependency that is absent, a security block, an incompatibility or a launcher problem. The sequence of events is useful evidence, but not a diagnosis.
- Restart the computer, then try launching the game once.
- Note whether the launcher opens, whether a game process appears briefly, and whether the game shows an error, hangs or closes silently.
- Copy the exact error text and note whether it appears in the launcher, Windows or the game itself.
- Record how the game was installed: from an official DRM-free release, or from files changed after installation. Do not assume that an altered installation contains every required game file or dependency.

Check compatibility and system readiness
Compare the PC with the game’s requirements
Check the game’s official system requirements against the computer’s operating system and hardware. A system close to the stated minimum can still encounter launch problems; requirements are a compatibility baseline, not a guarantee that every configuration will start successfully.

Update the operating system and graphics drivers
Install available operating-system updates and update graphics and other computer drivers using the supported update method from the operating-system or hardware vendor. Steam includes current OS and driver software among its general Windows troubleshooting steps.
Check game files and security software
If the game is installed through Steam, verify its files
Use Steam’s file-verification option for the affected game. The check can help address corrupted or incomplete downloads; it does not establish that a modified installation is complete or restore a separate dependency that the game needs.

If the error says “Missing Executable,” inspect quarantine
Steam says a missing executable can result from antivirus quarantine or detection, corrupted game files, or a failed download. Check the security product’s quarantine and detection history before concluding that the game file was deleted. Restore or allow a file only after confirming it belongs to the legitimate game installation. Steam’s Missing Executable support page also recommends verifying game files.
Look for software conflicts
Temporarily close nonessential applications and overlays, then try launching the game again. If that changes the result, re-enable the closed software one item at a time to narrow down a conflict. This is a diagnostic test, not evidence that a particular background program is responsible; Steam’s general guide recommends disabling nonessential software without naming a universal culprit.

Follow the branch that matches the error
The launcher says “This game is currently unavailable”
Follow the platform’s steps for that specific message rather than treating it as proof that DRM removal caused the issue. Steam’s guidance includes restarting Steam, updating drivers and verifying game files. For a third-party game, it also suggests trying the executable in the installation folder to see whether a more specific error appears. The message says the app is already running
A game process may have remained hung after a silent crash, or the installation may have a problem. Check for a leftover process for the game and close it if it is stuck; then verify the game’s files if it is installed through Steam. The game crashes, shows a specialized error or closes without a message
Check the game’s own support information for instructions matching the symptoms. GOG’s launching-issues index separates cases such as missing DirectX files, newer Intel CPUs, crashes during FMV intros and dual-GPU laptops. These are distinct scenarios; apply only instructions relevant to the game and hardware in question.

GOG’s developer QA requirements define DRM-free as shipping a game without technical restrictions on installation, copying or activation. They also say a game’s single-player aspects should work without Galaxy or an internet connection, and that required redistributables should be included. Those are GOG’s stated expectations for games on its platform, not a guarantee that every storefront’s release, an altered copy or an individual PC’s setup is complete and compatible. A DRM-free label describes restrictions on use; by itself, it does not confirm that files were changed correctly or that system dependencies are present. See GOG’s Quality Assurance requirements.

Escalate persistent game-specific failures
If the game still crashes after the relevant checks, contact its developer or publisher with the game version, operating system, exact error and steps already tried. Steam directs players to third-party support providers for third-party game crashes and bugs; Steam support handles Steam-related authentication or CD-key issues.
