First, determine whether the console is running Sony’s stock software or a homebrew emulator. A normal PS5 does not officially play PlayStation 2 game discs, so an “unsupported disc” message is expected in that state. A jailbroken PS5 can run community software such as PS5SX2, but that is a separate setup with its own payloads, BIOS, game files, model and firmware requirements. Follow the workflow below to separate an expected compatibility limit from a damaged disc, a failed optical drive, or an incomplete homebrew installation.
Why won’t my PS2 disc work on my jailbroken PS5?
The word “jailbroken” does not automatically mean the PS5 is currently running a PS2 emulator. If the console has booted into Sony’s ordinary system software, the official behavior applies: PS2-format game software cannot be played from a disc. Homebrew changes the software environment, not Sony’s official compatibility list. The PS5SX2 project describes an unofficial PCSX2 port for jailbroken PS5 consoles. Its documented setup requires the PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, a user-supplied PlayStation 2 BIOS and the user’s own game files. The project also warns that compatibility is changing and that its tested games are not a guarantee. Check the project’s current instructions and release notes at the PS5SX2 repository before treating a disc-read symptom as a hardware fault.

These are different questions: “Does the PS5 recognize this optical medium?” and “Can the active software run this PS2 game?” Sony’s list of DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW support does not grant official PS2 game compatibility. DVD recognition is therefore not proof that a PS2 title should launch.

Does a PS5 read DVDs?
Yes, a disc-edition PS5 supports the DVD formats Sony lists, including DVD-ROM and certain DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media. That statement concerns the physical media layer. It does not mean the console can execute every program recorded on a DVD. Sony separately excludes PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software from disc playback. A retail PS2 game can therefore be on a medium the drive is physically able to scan while still being rejected by the operating system.
Use a supported movie DVD or retail PS5 game as a control test, not another PS2 disc. If the control disc loads, the optical pickup is at least functioning for that format. If it does not, continue with Sony’s general disc procedure before changing emulator files. A digital-only PS5 has no optical drive, so no physical-disc test applies to that model.
Verify the homebrew environment before touching the disc
Confirm that the jailbreak is active for this boot
Many PS5 jailbreak configurations are not permanent. A reboot can return the console to stock software while leaving the hardware unchanged. If PS5SX2 or its helper application is not actually running, the standard PS5 interface will handle the disc and can report it as unsupported. Reboot only when your jailbreak instructions call for it, then load the same payload sequence you normally use.

Use the project’s current setup documentation rather than an old tutorial. The repository identifies these components as requirements:
- A jailbroken PS5 on a supported configuration.
- The PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff.
- ShadowMountPlus.
- A PlayStation 2 BIOS supplied by you.
- Game files supplied by you; the project does not include BIOS files, games or keys.
The repository’s tested examples cover specified PS5 and PS5 Pro models and firmware versions. A firmware or model absent from its table has not been tried in that documented test set, so do not assume that an unlisted combination is supported. Release notes can change the setup path, file locations or compatibility behavior.
Separate an emulator problem from a disc problem
If your installation uses a game dump or another known-good title and that also fails, the likely issue is the emulator environment, BIOS, game format or firmware compatibility rather than the optical disc. If digital or mounted content works but a physical disc does not, the project’s current physical-media support must be checked directly; the available documentation does not establish a complete matrix of PS2 CD/DVD media or external optical-drive compatibility.
Inspect and clean the PS2 disc safely
Look for physical damage
Sony lists dirt, scratches, recording quality and manufacturing variation as factors that can affect playback of supported discs. Examine the label and data sides under a light. Do not use a cracked, warped, repaired or sticker-covered disc, and do not insert a non-circular disc. Sony also warns against 8 cm discs. Clean from the center outward
For fingerprints or loose dirt, use a clean, soft cloth. For a dirty or scratched DVD or Blu-ray, Sony recommends a lint-free cleaning cloth made for optical discs; wipe in straight strokes from the center toward the outer edge. Do not scrub in a circular path, use household solvents, or expect cleaning to repair a deep scratch. Cleaning can improve reading of media the PS5 already supports, but it cannot add PS2 compatibility to stock software or correct a missing homebrew component.
Insert the disc in the correct orientation
When the PS5 is standing vertically on its stand, Sony says the labeled side should face left as you insert the disc. If the console is horizontal, follow the orientation shown by the drive’s markings. Eject and reinsert after cleaning or changing orientation so the console gets a fresh read attempt.
Use another supported disc to test the optical drive
A PS2 disc by itself cannot tell you whether the drive is defective: the software format may be unsupported even when the mechanism is healthy. Sony recommends trying another game, Blu-ray Disc or DVD. Choose a disc type Sony lists as supported, not another PS2 title. The PS5 also cannot play burned discs or audio CDs according to Sony’s guidance.

How do I know if my PS5 disc drive is broken?
Look for a pattern across media the PS5 officially supports. A single PS2 disc producing an error is weak evidence because the format itself is unsupported in stock software. A retail PS5 game, a commercial movie DVD and a Blu-ray all failing after correct insertion and cleaning is stronger evidence of a drive, loading or system problem. Grinding, repeated spin-up attempts, immediate ejection or the absence of any disc icon can also justify service, but software messages alone do not identify a failed laser.
Test one disc at a time and record the result. Do not force a disc into the slot, use an 8 cm adapter, or open the drive while troubleshooting. If the console reads some supported formats but not others, note which formats work; that information is more useful to a repair technician than the statement that “PS2 discs fail.”
Follow Sony’s recovery sequence for supported media
Perform these steps only as a general PS5 disc diagnosis. They cannot make stock software launch a PS2-format game.
- Eject and reinsert the disc. Confirm the correct label orientation for your console position, then let the system attempt to read it again.
- Clean and inspect the disc. Use the center-to-edge method described above. Reject cracked, deformed, repaired, stickered, non-circular or 8 cm media.
- Try another supported game, Blu-ray Disc or DVD. This comparison is the quickest way to distinguish a single-disc fault from a general drive problem. Do not use a burned disc or audio CD as the comparison.
- Use Safe Mode’s “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database” option. Turn off the PS5, enter Safe Mode according to Sony’s console instructions, connect the controller with a USB cable, and select the combined cache/database option. Reinsert the supported disc after the console restarts.
- Consider reinstalling system software only as a later measure. Sony states that reinstalling system software deletes all information on the console. Back up anything you need and follow Sony’s current installation instructions; this is not a compatibility fix for PS2 discs and can remove a jailbreak or homebrew environment.
- Contact PlayStation Repairs if supported discs still fail. Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs when its disc troubleshooting sequence does not resolve the problem. A persistent failure across known-good supported media is stronger evidence of a hardware issue than a PS2 disc failure alone.
Why does my PS5 say “unsupported disc”?
Stock software is rejecting the software format
On an ordinary PS5, the message is consistent with Sony’s published limitation: PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from disc. The console may still read other DVD media, because physical DVD support and game-format support are separate layers.

The jailbreak is present but the emulator is not loaded
A jailbreak state without the PS5SX2 Helper, kstuff and ShadowMountPlus does not provide the documented PS2 emulation path. Check that each component loaded successfully for the current session and that the emulator can see your user-supplied BIOS and game files.
Your model or firmware is outside the tested set
PS5SX2’s repository lists tested model and firmware combinations and notes that unlisted firmware has not been tried in its table. An unsupported or untested combination can fail even when the steps appear correct. Treat the project’s current table and release notes as the authority for what has actually been tested.
The particular game is not compatible yet
The project’s tested-game results can change, and the authors explicitly caution that those results are not a compatibility guarantee. A game that boots in one release, firmware combination or console model may behave differently after an update. Record the exact emulator release, console model, firmware and game version when reporting a reproducible failure.
What the available documentation does not establish
Do not assume that every physical PS2 CD or DVD can be passed directly to PS5SX2, or that a particular external optical drive will solve the problem. The project information available for this guide does not provide a complete, current compatibility matrix for physical PS2 disc media or external drives. Unless a current project release explicitly documents your media type and hardware, use the disc only as a symptom and continue diagnosis with the supported setup and known-good files.
Likewise, do not treat a cleaning cloth, a database rebuild or a different USB drive as a way to bypass Sony’s format restriction. Those actions address surface contamination, database state or documented setup variables; they do not convert a stock PS5 into a PS2 player.

- Boot-state check: If the console is in stock software, stop expecting a PS2 disc to launch. The result is normal.
- Homebrew check: If jailbroken, verify the current PS5SX2 prerequisites, BIOS and game files, using the project’s latest documentation.
- Media check: Inspect, clean and correctly orient the disc. Do not use damaged, circularity-violating, stickered or 8 cm media.
- Supported-disc check: Test a retail PS5 game, DVD or Blu-ray. Do not use a burned disc or audio CD for this test.
- System check: If supported media fail, run Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option, then retest.
- Repair decision: If multiple supported discs still fail, use PlayStation Repairs. If supported discs work but PS2 software does not, focus on homebrew compatibility rather than replacing the drive.
Before changing anything, record these details
- Whether the console was freshly booted into stock software or the jailbreak was activated for the session.
- PS5 or PS5 Pro model identifier and system-software firmware version.
- PS5SX2 release, helper payload version and whether kstuff and ShadowMountPlus loaded successfully.
- Whether the user-supplied BIOS is visible to the emulator and whether a known-good game file starts.
- Disc type, region or edition when known, physical condition and the exact on-screen error.
- Results from at least one supported retail game, DVD or Blu-ray.
These details prevent a common diagnostic mistake: attributing a software-format rejection to a failing optical mechanism. They also make a homebrew issue reproducible when the project’s compatibility changes.

Can a PS5 read PS2 discs without a jailbreak?
No. Sony’s safety guide excludes PlayStation 2 software from disc playback. A disc drive that reads DVDs is not the same as an operating system that supports PS2 games.
Will cleaning a PS2 disc make it work?
Cleaning may help a supported disc with fingerprints or dirt. It cannot overcome Sony’s format restriction, supply a missing BIOS, or repair a deep scratch. Use a lint-free optical-disc cloth and wipe from the center outward.

Should I try another PS2 disc?
Another PS2 disc does not isolate the drive because the entire format may be unsupported. Test a retail PS5 game, commercial DVD or Blu-ray instead. Those results provide a meaningful comparison.
Can an external DVD drive make PS2 discs work?
Do not assume so. The documented PS5SX2 material does not provide a complete, current list of external-drive or physical-disc support. Follow a project release that explicitly names your hardware before purchasing accessories.
Does rebuilding the database fix PS5SX2?
Safe Mode’s cache and database option is part of Sony’s troubleshooting sequence for supported-media problems. It is not an emulator installation step and cannot create PS2 compatibility. It may also require you to reactivate homebrew afterward.
Will reinstalling PS5 system software help?

Bottom line
A PS2 disc that will not launch on a jailbroken PS5 is not automatically evidence of a broken drive. Stock PS5 software officially excludes PS2 game discs, while PS5SX2 requires a separately configured homebrew environment whose model, firmware and game compatibility are still evolving. Verify the active setup first, inspect and clean the disc, test a supported retail disc, run Sony’s Safe Mode database step only for supported-media failures, and seek repair only when multiple supported discs fail. For physical PS2-media support, rely on the current PS5SX2 documentation rather than assuming that DVD recognition or an external drive guarantees playback.
