If Skull and Bones keeps crashing on an Xbox Series X or Series S, start by fully restarting the console, installing available game and Xbox updates, and checking that the console has clear ventilation. These are general troubleshooting steps—not a confirmed fix for every crash in this game. The official material available does not identify a current, game-specific Xbox crash cause or establish that a particular fix works for all players.
First, check whether the problem looks game-specific
Microsoft lists Skull and Bones as “Optimized for XBOX Series X|S,” with a release date of February 22, 2024. Its store listing also says console online play requires a persistent internet connection, a Ubisoft Account, a Microsoft Account, and Game Pass Core or Ultimate. These listing details may change. See the Xbox Store listing.
Ubisoft’s general troubleshooting guidance notes that technical issues can arise from outdated system versions or particular system configurations, and directs players to platform-specific support, including Xbox Series X|S. That guidance does not diagnose a Skull and Bones-specific crash. Ubisoft troubleshooting and support.
If the game will not connect or you suspect a service problem, check Ubisoft’s service-status page. A status-page update timestamp alone does not confirm that a crash incident is active or resolved.

Try the low-impact steps first
1. Fully quit the game and power-cycle the Xbox
- Quit Skull and Bones rather than leaving it suspended.
- Hold the Xbox console’s power button for 10 seconds to shut it down.
- Disconnect the power cable for 10 seconds, reconnect it, and start the console.
- Launch the game again and note whether it still crashes and when.
This shutdown procedure is general Xbox troubleshooting advice published by Square Enix, not a Ubisoft-prescribed fix for Skull and Bones. Square Enix’s Xbox troubleshooting advice.
2. Install available updates
Check for Xbox system updates and updates for Skull and Bones, install anything available, then retry. Ubisoft’s general guidance identifies outdated system versions as a possible source of technical trouble; it does not say an update will resolve every crash.

3. Check ventilation
Make sure the console’s vents have room for airflow and are not obstructed. Poor ventilation is a general Xbox troubleshooting consideration, not a confirmed diagnosis that overheating is causing your game’s crash.
If crashes continue: consider the higher-effort steps
Reinstall the game
If the basic checks do not help, you can uninstall and reinstall Skull and Bones. Square Enix includes reinstallation among general Xbox crash troubleshooting suggestions. That advice does not establish that reinstalling fixes this title’s crashes, so treat it as a later troubleshooting step rather than a guaranteed remedy.

Clear Xbox cache or persistent storage
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s general Xbox Series X|S cache guide, last updated July 29, 2025, says: “These cached files can get corrupted over time, leading to things like game freezes, loading errors, or connectivity issues.” Its procedure includes powering off and unplugging the console, waiting two minutes, and clearing persistent storage through Settings > Devices & connections > Blu-ray > Persistent storage. Read Rockstar’s cache instructions.
Rockstar says its cache steps do not affect save data, but they reset brightness and language settings. This is another publisher’s general console guidance, not a verified Skull and Bones fix; follow the linked instructions carefully if you choose to try it.
