Then follow the instructions for the exact error message. The steps below narrow down common causes; they cannot diagnose every game-specific or hardware problem.
Start with checks that are safe and easy to undo
- Record what happens. Note whether the game never opens, briefly shows “Preparing to Launch,” closes immediately, stays marked as running, or displays a specific error. The wording helps identify the right branch below.
- Restart Windows and Steam. Save your work, restart the PC, reopen Steam, and try the game again before changing other settings. Steam recommends a fresh restart as an early check. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting steps.
- Install available Windows and hardware-driver updates. Check Windows Update and the appropriate driver updates for your PC, especially graphics drivers if they have not been updated recently. Steam includes both checks in its general launch guidance.
- Verify the affected game’s files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game (or select its gear icon), choose Properties, open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Steam says this can take several minutes. Run it for one game at a time, not alongside other system-intensive work. A report that one or more files failed verification can be normal when those are local configuration files; by itself, it does not prove the verification process failed. - Compare the game’s requirements with your PC. Open the game’s Steam Store page and check its supported operating systems and hardware requirements. If Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform,” the game does not support the operating system you are using.
- Test for interference from background software only if needed. Non-essential software can interfere with a launch. Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs. If the game works in clean boot, investigate the disabled apps or services, then return Windows to normal startup. If it still fails, that result does not point to interference from another app or service. Follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions carefully.
Change one thing at a time and retest. If the message names a specific error, use the matching branch instead of repeating general checks.
Fix the error shown by Steam
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This can mean a game file is missing or has been blocked. Check your antivirus or security software’s history and quarantine for the affected file, then verify the game files using the steps above. Steam’s guidance is at Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable).
Do not turn off antivirus protection or whitelist a file just to get past the message. Steam notes that false positives can occur, but malware detections should be taken seriously. If you are unsure whether a file is safe, contact the security software provider; only consider an exception if you have established that the file is not malicious and are following the provider’s instructions. “Failed to start game (app already running)”
The game may have crashed silently and left a process running, or it may be open under another Windows account. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, find the game process, and end it. If it will not close, restart the computer, then try launching again. Steam also recommends testing both the beta and normal Steam client if you participate in Steam beta. For a persistent game-specific launch failure, contact the game’s support team using the support link in its Steam Library page. More detail is available in Steam’s “app already running” guidance.
“This game is currently unavailable”
Exit and restart Steam, update drivers, and verify the game files. Steam also recommends checking whether files in the Steam folder are marked read-only. For a non-Valve game, you can try launching its executable from the installation folder. Some games need secondary installers to add components; if an installer was canceled or blocked, the game may not start correctly. If these steps do not resolve the message, use Steam’s troubleshooting guidance for this error, including its network troubleshooting steps, rather than assuming the game files are the only cause.

“Game is not available on your current platform”
Check the game’s Store page for supported operating systems and hardware. If the current operating system is unsupported, verifying files will not add compatibility. Steam directs Store purchasers to its refund process for an unsupported game; if you redeemed a third-party key, ask the retailer about its refund options. See Steam’s platform-availability guidance.

If general checks do not fix the launch problem, Steam recommends seeking deeper help from the game developer. For a Missing Executable error that remains after checking security software and verifying files, submit a Steam Support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error and the system report Steam requests. For other cases, provide the exact message, what happens when you launch, and the steps you have already tried; use the relevant Steam or game support channel. A clean-boot result can help explain whether the game behaves differently without non-essential startup software.
