For The Witcher 3 on PC, start by recording your game version, storefront, DirectX mode, GPU driver, and whether mods or overlays are active. Then test the official baseline fixes one at a time: verify the game files, temporarily close overlays and other nonessential applications, and clean-install the graphics driver. The right next step depends on whether the game crashes, runs poorly, fails to launch, or displays visual artifacts—and on which build you have installed.
CD PROJEKT RED announced Hotfix 5.00c for the Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere PC versions on October 1, 2026. Check your storefront and the version shown in the main menu before applying build-specific advice; the hotfix includes visual changes in Velen and a fix for launching Classic 1.32. Before troubleshooting, record your game and PC details
Write down the information below before changing settings. It helps distinguish a game-build issue from a driver, mod, or configuration problem, and CD PROJEKT RED’s gameplay issue form asks for several of these details.
- Game version and storefront: Check the version shown in the main menu, and note whether you use Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, or Xbox Play Anywhere. Support materials distinguish versions such as 5.0, 4.04, and 1.32.
- DirectX mode: Record whether the game is running in DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, if your installation offers that choice.
- Hardware and driver: Note your GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- Modifications: Record whether mods, trainers, or console commands are in use.
- Symptom and trigger: Note the exact error, visual problem, or performance issue, and where or when it happens. Say whether it began after an update or a driver change.
Make one change at a time, then repeat the same action or visit the same location to see whether the symptom changes. This keeps a useful diagnostic trail instead of mixing together several possible causes.

Check system requirements against the installed build
First compare your PC with the requirements that apply to your installed version. CD PROJEKT RED’s updated PC requirements page says its revised minimums take effect “starting from the next update,” so they should not be treated as requirements already in force for every current installation. The announced updated minimum configuration is:
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows 11
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5-8400
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB, with 6 GB VRAM
- Memory and storage: 12 GB RAM and 70 GB SSD
These are configuration thresholds, not a promise of a particular frame rate or a diagnosis of a crash. Check the version and effective timing on CD PROJEKT RED’s updated PC requirements page.

Fix crashes and instability
For crashes, CD PROJEKT RED’s general sequence is to check requirements, close nonessential applications, verify the installation, and clean-install the graphics driver if the problem continues. Its crash guidance also says an older driver may sometimes help.
- Close nonessential applications. Exit background programs and retry the same gameplay sequence. If you suspect malware or unusual system behavior, scan the PC with your security software.
- Verify the game files. Use your storefront’s file-verification or repair option, then test again. The exact menu labels vary by storefront.
- Clean-install the GPU driver. Download the appropriate driver from your GPU maker before removing the current one, then install the downloaded driver. If crashes began after a driver update, try the previous driver version instead.
If the crash happens only with mods or trainers enabled, disable them for a controlled test and record the result. This does not establish that a mod is the cause; it helps determine whether the issue also occurs in an unmodified setup.

Reduce stuttering, low frame rates, or long loading times
CD PROJEKT RED recommends a clean graphics-driver installation for low frame rates, choppy performance, and slow loading. Its performance troubleshooting page also identifies overlays and other running tools as useful variables to test.
- Close overlays and nonessential tools temporarily. Test with overlays such as Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and Galaxy disabled, along with hardware-monitoring tools and other unnecessary applications.
- Test security software only as a temporary diagnostic. The official guidance includes antivirus or anti-malware programs among items to disable while diagnosing. Do not leave protection off as a permanent fix; restore it after the test.
- Clean-install the graphics driver. Follow the GPU manufacturer’s driver-cleanup and installation process. If the performance issue started immediately after a driver update, try the previous driver.
- Verify the game files. Repair or verify the installation through the storefront, then repeat the same test.
These steps do not prove that the GPU is responsible. A performance problem can depend on the game build, DirectX mode, graphics settings, driver, overlays, or other system conditions. Record which combination you tested rather than assuming one setting is universally best.

If The Witcher 3 will not launch
When the game fails before reaching the main menu, use the launch-specific sequence from CD PROJEKT RED rather than treating it only as a frame-rate issue. The official launch guidance recommends:
- Check that your PC meets the requirements for the installed game version.
- Reinstall the graphics driver.
- Reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables.
- Disable unnecessary applications, especially overlays, and try again.
- Try launching Windows in clean boot mode to test whether another startup program is interfering.
If an error code appears, include its exact text or number when contacting support. Do not infer a specific cause from a launch failure alone.

Investigate flicker, incorrect lighting, or other graphics glitches
There is no single universal fix established for every visual glitch. First identify the build and location: Hotfix 5.00c includes visual adjustments in Velen, including Bloom, vegetation lighting, saturation, and Path Tracing lighting. It also fixes launching Classic 1.32. If your symptom appeared around an update, compare your installed version with the official 5.00c patch notes.
- Record where the glitch occurs, what it looks like, and whether it is repeatable.
- Note DirectX mode, GPU and driver version, and whether ray tracing or path tracing is enabled.
- Temporarily test without mods and overlays to see whether the issue persists in a simpler configuration.
- Capture a screenshot for a graphics issue and, if the problem is tied to a particular location, keep a save from that point.
Do not assume that changing graphics modes or enabling a feature such as DLSS will fix a glitch. NVIDIA describes path tracing and DLSS features for the Remastered release, but those descriptions do not establish a best setting for every GPU or diagnose an individual visual problem: NVIDIA’s Witcher 3 Remastered feature overview.
Prepare a useful support report
If the problem remains after a controlled test, send CD PROJEKT RED enough information to reproduce or investigate it. The support form accepts relevant screenshots, save files, and a DxDiag report; the performance page also asks for a video when possible and a save when the issue is location-specific.
