Buffering is a symptom, not proof of packet loss or a carrier fault. These checks help narrow down whether the likely issue is the video or YouTube, the phone or app, or the mobile connection.
Start by recording what happens
Before changing settings, note the conditions so you can compare results and give Vi useful information if you contact support.
- Date, approximate time, and general location. Avoid sharing a full address publicly.
- Phone make and model, operating system, and whether you use the YouTube app or a browser.
- Cellular network mode and the signal indication shown by the phone.
- Whether the video is live or on demand, the selected playback quality, and the exact symptom: buffering, stuttering, quality dropping, or a playback error.
- Whether other apps and websites stall on Vi, and whether the same video works over another connection.
If the issue comes and goes, repeat the observations at a different time. One successful or failed attempt may not represent the connection consistently.
Use comparisons to narrow down the cause
Replay the same video over Wi-Fi or another available internet connection. Then, while using Vi, check whether non-YouTube apps or websites also stall. YouTube’s own troubleshooting guidance recommends trying a different internet connection when videos buffer: YouTube streaming and video troubleshooting.

These patterns are clues, not definitive tests. A YouTube-specific delivery route can complicate the results.
Reduce playback demand and check quality
Manually select a lower quality in YouTube and see whether playback stabilizes. YouTube publishes these approximate sustained-speed guidelines for common resolutions; they are not packet-loss thresholds, guarantees, or Vi performance figures: YouTube video-error troubleshooting.

A speed test shows throughput at a particular moment. It does not establish that a stream has a stable connection over time, or prove packet loss. If reducing quality helps, record that result as a clue about available throughput rather than as a diagnosis.
Check the YouTube app, browser, and phone
- Close and reopen the YouTube app or browser, then try another video.
- Check for an app or browser update. Restart the phone if the problem persists.
- On Android, consider clearing YouTube’s cache through the phone’s system settings.
- Confirm that mobile data is enabled for YouTube and that the phone has data available.
- Inspect DNS settings only if you have reason to believe they were changed. Avoid altering unrelated settings as a first response.
These checks can help identify an app or device issue; they do not confirm or rule out a Vi network problem.

Check the Vi connection and contact support
- Briefly toggle airplane mode off and on, or restart the mobile connection. Check whether the issue is limited to one location or time.
- Confirm that your account has data available. Vi’s data and calls support page points customers to network troubleshooting, notes speed checking through its app, and lists chat, email, and store support routes. Use the current options shown there.
- If you contact Vi, provide your approximate location, timestamps, phone and app details, network mode, selected playback quality, whether other services stalled, and whether another connection worked. Ask whether there is an incident or local network issue; a report does not guarantee a repair.
When an APN check makes sense
Do not begin by editing the Access Point Name (APN). If mobile-data configuration appears wrong, check current Vi and device instructions first. Vi’s APN FAQ lists “www” for Android and “iphone” for iPhone, but its menu directions or values may not match every current device and operating-system version. Treat those entries as a carrier reference to verify, not a universal fix for buffering.
Use network-settings reset only as a later step
Vi’s mobile-speed guidance discusses measures including resetting network settings. This can remove saved settings; before proceeding, review the phone’s reset prompt and back up Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings as appropriate. Try the lower-impact comparisons and checks first.

Do ping or traceroute results prove packet loss?
Not on their own. Ping or traceroute can help document a repeatable network observation, but routing differences and deprioritized ICMP responses can affect results. A single test is not conclusive evidence about YouTube traffic or proof that Vi is responsible. If you share measurements with support, include the test method and repeatable results alongside your video and connection comparisons.
Historical measurements should also be kept in context. A TRAI Kolkata QoS report is location-specific and historical; its measurements should not be generalized to a current connection in another place or at another time.
