Sometimes you can continue a Steam demo save in the full game, but it depends on the game: developers decide whether the two versions share or recognize save data. Check that title’s official instructions before buying, uninstalling the demo, or creating a new full-game save. Steam Cloud support alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Can you transfer a Steam demo save to the full game?
There is no Steam-wide rule that makes demo progress carry over. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says developers can configure a demo and full game to share cloud storage between their app IDs, a setup it describes as most commonly used for demo and full-game saved games: Steam Cloud documentation. Whether a particular save transfers—and how—depends on the game’s implementation and instructions.

Some games detect a compatible demo save when you launch the full game; others require an explicit import or cloud setup, and some do not permit transfer. Check the game’s official FAQ, support page, or announcements for terms such as “demo save,” “transfer,” and “carry over.”
What to check before you buy or uninstall the demo
- Check the Steam Store page. Look for the Steam Cloud indicator, but treat it only as evidence that the game may use Cloud. It does not prove that the demo save is synced or that the full game can read it.
- Look up the developer’s transfer instructions. Confirm whether the title supports carryover, whether it uses Steam Cloud or local save detection, and whether there are conditions such as needing to import before making a full-game save.
- Keep the demo save intact. Leave the demo installed and do not delete or overwrite its data until you know the game’s process. If the game uses Cloud, let the demo sync while online and check for a sync warning before uninstalling or switching devices.
Steam explains that developers choose which files are synced, and some games keep saves locally rather than in Steam Cloud. Offline play can delay syncing and contribute to conflicts. See Steam Support’s Steam Cloud guidance.

How to move from the demo to the full game
- Buy and install the full game. Keep the demo and its save available while you follow the title’s official instructions.
- Use the game’s specified transfer method. Depending on the title, the full game may find the demo save automatically, offer an import option, or require Cloud configuration. Follow the developer’s steps rather than assuming a file-copy method.
- Do not start a new save first if the instructions warn against it. Some games’ import prompts or transfer rules depend on there being no existing full-game save.
- Confirm your progress loaded before removing the demo data. Check the relevant save in the full game, then decide whether to keep the demo installed.
Why might the demo save not appear?
- The title does not support transfer. A Steam-hosted demo manual for one game explicitly says its demo data cannot be transferred. That is a game-specific rule, not a Steam-wide restriction.
- The demo and full game are not configured to share or detect the save. Steam Cloud being enabled does not establish that the relevant demo files are included or readable by the full game.
- A required condition was missed. A publisher may require that no full-game save exists yet, or may require Cloud Save Data to be enabled for both versions.
- The save has not synced, or a Cloud conflict needs attention. Offline play or a sync warning can leave versions out of step. Compare timestamps and progress when resolving a conflict; do not choose blindly.
If the save is missing, stop before deleting or replacing more data. Check that the original save still exists on the device where you played the demo, review the Cloud settings for both versions, and consult the game’s official support guidance. Steam Support warns that it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts on a user’s behalf: Steam Cloud troubleshooting.

Dinkum: transfer is supported, with demo limits
The developer’s Dinkum Demo FAQ says players can continue by loading the demo save in the full game after purchase. It also limits the demo to one in-game month and one save slot, and warns that local-only data may be deleted if the game is uninstalled.

Square Enix support: an existing full-game save can matter
In its guidance for a covered title, Square Enix says the transfer is available only if no full-game save already exists. Its Steam Deck instructions also call for enabling Cloud Save Data for both the demo and full game. These conditions apply to that guidance, not to every Steam game.
Some demos do not transfer saves
One Steam-hosted demo manual states that save data cannot be transferred to the full version. Check the manual or support page for the game you played rather than inferring its policy from another title.
