The best way to spend less on games depends first on what you play and where: free-to-play games can avoid a subscription entirely, PlayStation Plus is an option for PlayStation owners, and buying a few games on sale can beat paying for a broad catalog you rarely use. None is a universal replacement for Xbox Game Pass.
Compare the main alternatives
PlayStation Plus prices below are the US prices displayed by Sony on October 7, 2026. Prices, catalogs, and availability can differ by country and may change, so check your local store before paying.
| Option | Platform and cost | What you get | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free-to-play games | Xbox; no subscription fee for online multiplayer in free-to-play games | Play eligible free-to-play titles online. Selected games can also be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. | Does not include paid Game Pass catalog games. Cloud play has device, region, and connection requirements. |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | PlayStation; US prices displayed October 7, 2026: $10.99 monthly, $27.99 per three months, or $79.99 per 12 months | Monthly games, online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play. | It is not a large on-demand game catalog. Monthly games and other membership benefits are distinct from owning a broad catalog. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | PlayStation; US prices displayed October 7, 2026: $16.99 monthly, $43.99 per three months, or $134.99 per 12 months | Essential benefits plus a Game Catalog Sony describes as hundreds of games, with new titles added regularly; Ubisoft+ Classics is also listed. | Catalog games rotate and require an active membership. Contents vary by plan and time. |
| Buy selected games individually | Xbox, PlayStation, PC, or another platform, depending on the game and store; cost varies by title and sale | Pay for the specific games you want rather than a subscription library. | Whether this costs less depends on actual prices and how many games you play; there is no universal break-even point. |

Choose by platform and play habits
If you play on Xbox and want to avoid monthly fees
Start with free-to-play games if the titles you enjoy are in that category. Xbox says every Xbox player can access online multiplayer for free-to-play games without a paid membership. That route does not open the paid Game Pass catalog, so it works best when the free games themselves meet your needs.

Some free-to-play titles are also available through Xbox cloud gaming with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Streaming is not equivalent to having the full Game Pass library, and not every game or location is eligible.
If you play on PlayStation and want multiplayer or monthly games
Essential is the relevant tier if you want PlayStation console online multiplayer and monthly games, but do not need a large on-demand library. Sony also lists discounts, cloud storage, and Share Play as Essential benefits. Its US prices shown on October 7, 2026 were $10.99 per month, $27.99 per three months, and $79.99 per year.

If you play on PlayStation and want a rotating catalog
Extra adds the Game Catalog to Essential benefits. It is closer to a subscription library, but it is not a drop-in replacement for Game Pass: it serves PlayStation users, and its selection and terms are Sony’s. Sony says the catalog contains hundreds of games and receives additions regularly, but individual games can leave. PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026, according to Sony’s plan information.
If you replay a small number of games
Buying your short list individually may make more sense than paying repeatedly for a catalog. Compare the actual sale price of each game you want with the subscription cost over the period you expect to play. A subscription can be worthwhile for someone who samples many games; ownership can suit someone who returns to the same few. The result depends on your prices and habits, not a fixed savings formula.

Understand catalog access and cancellation
A subscription catalog is temporary access, not a permanent collection of owned games. Sony says catalog availability varies by plan and over time; some games have removal dates, and an active membership is required to play catalog titles. If you are partway through a game, check its leaving date before subscribing or deciding when to cancel. Monthly games are a separate Essential benefit, so check Sony’s plan terms for how those differ from catalog titles.
Buying a game individually avoids catalog rotation, but it also means paying the game’s price rather than relying on a membership to include it. Before choosing, list the games you will realistically play during the next few months and compare their current individual prices with the subscription total for the same period.

Check cloud gaming requirements before relying on it
Xbox cloud gaming
Microsoft lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select smart TVs, Fire TV devices, and select VR headsets among supported devices. Cloud play requires a supported region. For subscription games, an active eligible subscription is required; selected free-to-play games instead work with a free Microsoft account. Microsoft lists a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps, while some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Most games need a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB, although selected games offer touch controls.
Check Microsoft’s cloud gaming FAQ for device and region eligibility; support can vary. Streaming can be a useful way to play without installing a game, but it is not a way around subscription eligibility for subscription titles.

PlayStation Plus cloud streaming
Sony describes cloud streaming for eligible games on PS4, PS5, and PC through PlayStation Plus Premium, in supported regions and territories. Sony lists at least 5 Mbps for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. The plan page and game eligibility rules determine what can be streamed; these requirements do not mean every catalog game is streamable.
What Xbox announced for cloud-hour limits
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated September 3, 2026, Microsoft said that monthly cloud gaming hours would begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Xbox said subscribers would be able to buy additional time, but the announcement did not provide its price or availability details. It also announced planned pay-as-you-go access for people without Game Pass to stream eligible games they own. Because the stated start date is in the future as of October 7, 2026, verify the implementation and current terms in the Xbox Wire announcement before counting on a particular allowance or price. Xbox estimated that the change would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers; that is Microsoft’s estimate, not an independently verified measurement.
Quick Recap
Make the budget decision
- Choose free-to-play if the games you want are free-to-play and you mainly need online multiplayer without a paid Xbox membership.
- Choose PlayStation Plus Essential if you play on PlayStation and value multiplayer and monthly games more than an extensive rotating catalog.
- Consider PlayStation Plus Extra if you play on PlayStation often enough to use its changing catalog and accept that access depends on an active membership.
- Buy games individually if your list is short, you replay titles, and current sale prices compare favorably with the subscription cost for the same period.
- Before paying for any option, confirm your platform, local price, current catalog, multiplayer needs, and—if streaming—region, device, connection, controller, and usage terms.
