A Premiere is a one-time shared viewing of an uploaded video; to keep programming going afterward, schedule separate YouTube Live streams or run a continuous feed. Use the Premiere as the launch event, then guide viewers to the next event where eligible.
What a Premiere does—and what it doesn’t
Before a Premiere, YouTube creates a public watch page where people can set reminders, comment, and chat. You can add a trailer. At the scheduled time, a countdown leads into the uploaded video. Viewers watch it together, can rewind, and cannot skip ahead beyond the part that has played.
Afterward, the video remains on your channel as a regular upload, and chat replay is available. Premiere views transfer to the video afterward. A Premiere is therefore useful as an event and an archive, but it does not continue playing new material or keep a live feed running. YouTube’s Premiere help page explains the feature.
Plan the handoff from the Premiere to ongoing programming
- Schedule the Premiere. Upload the finished video in YouTube Studio, choose Premiere while scheduling, select a countdown if it suits the event, and share the public watch page so viewers can set reminders. Describe it accurately as a scheduled viewing of an uploaded video, not as a livestream.
- Choose what follows. Create a separate scheduled YouTube Live stream or a continuous programming feed. For an encoder-based stream, retrieve the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio and enter them in your software or hardware encoder. If this is your first live stream, enable live streaming in advance: YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the setup.
- Test before the audience arrives. YouTube’s live-streaming tips call for a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Run a test, check the preview and access, and monitor audio and video during the stream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips before going live.
- Tell viewers where to go next. Explain the handoff in the Premiere chat or stream. If your channel is eligible, use Live Redirect to send viewers from the Premiere or an ending stream to the next selected Premiere or live stream.
- Decide how to preserve the live material. Keep the Premiere upload available and consider shorter live sessions, highlights, or an independent local recording if replay retention matters. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in the automatic archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Use Live Redirect when the channel qualifies
Live Redirect can route viewers from an ending stream or Premiere to another selected Premiere or live stream. YouTube’s current Help page says a creator sending viewers must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Sending viewers to another channel’s live stream requires that channel’s permission. YouTube recommends creating the Premiere before the stream if you want to route a live audience into that Premiere. Check YouTube’s Live Redirect requirements and setup because eligibility and Studio controls can change.

If you do not qualify, make the next destination easy to find: name the upcoming stream in chat, use the channel’s scheduled content and descriptions, and keep the handoff clear. Do not promise that viewers will be automatically transferred.
Choose how to keep the live feed running
YouTube documents software encoders, standalone hardware encoders, and verified encoder products and services. A local encoder gives you direct control but depends on the computer, encoder, power, and internet connection staying available. A cloud playout service can run prerecorded programming without a home computer staying on. YouTube’s encoder directory includes a cloud service described as supporting 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos; that listing is not a comparative reliability test or a guarantee of uninterrupted service. - Operation: Decide whether you will maintain a local computer and encoder or use cloud-hosted playout.
- Continuity and recovery: Check whether the approach can loop or schedule prerecorded material and what happens if the connection or YouTube stream drops.
- Monitoring: Assign someone to check stream status, picture, and sound; continuous programming still needs an operating plan.
- Archive: Plan for local copies or shorter sessions if you need dependable replay retention.
- Rights and channel suitability: Confirm that you are authorized to use every video and audio element for the intended use and audience. The YouTube documentation cited here does not establish that a particular playlist is cleared for 24/7 streaming.
