Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo turn a long video you uploaded into a highlight, open it in YouTube Studio, select Clips and Shorts, choose Create clip or Short, and mark the moment using transcript text or timestamps. Preview the selection, check its framing and captions, then create a draft. AI suggestions may help you find moments, but they are not available to every country or language.
Make a Short or clip from your uploaded video in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content → Videos.
- Select the video you want to edit. In its left menu, open Clips and Shorts, then choose Create clip or Short.
- Choose whether the result should be a Short or a video clip.
- Select the section you want. You can choose transcript text and confirm the selection, or set the start and end times on the timeline. If AI suggestions or an outline appear, use them to navigate the transcript, then adjust the selection yourself.
- For a Short, preview the result. If automatic captions are available, review their wording and placement; YouTube allows their style and position to be customized or captions to be disabled. Create a draft and finish the usual upload flow.
- For a video clip, you can add an eligible intro or outro, then create a draft and finish uploading. YouTube recommends linking the source video in the clip description.
The transcript used in this workflow supplies auto-generated captions for the Short. Shorts made with the tool automatically include the source video as a related video, except when the Short is private, unlisted, or Made for Kids. YouTube Help explains the Studio workflow and its conditions.
If transcript selection or AI options are missing
Use timestamps on the timeline; transcript selection is not required. AI suggestions and outlines are conditional: YouTube lists Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, for those features. If the option is absent, manual selection remains the documented route. Availability can vary by account.
Choose a moment that works as a standalone highlight
Look for a segment with a clear point: a strong opening, a funny or exciting exchange, a useful explanation, one actionable tutorial step, or a visually compelling demonstration. Remove unnecessary setup, but keep enough context that someone who has not watched the full video can understand what is happening.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Tutorial: Build the clip around one useful step rather than stitching together disconnected tips.
- Conversation or gaming commentary: Keep the question or setup that makes the answer, reaction, or punchline understandable.
- Visual gameplay or demonstration: Check that a vertical crop keeps the important action or subject in frame.
YouTube’s creator guidance recommends cropping for a vertical 9:16 frame, adding captions or text overlays where they help, and making the Short enjoyable on its own even if it also directs viewers to the longer video. Its April 16, 2025 article, “From epic edits to quick clips: Transitioning your long-form content to YouTube Shorts”, gives that standalone principle. Adapt the crop and overlays to the material; not every clip needs the same treatment.
Know which YouTube clipping feature you are using
| Feature | What it creates | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Viewer-facing Clips | A 5-to-60-second segment that loops from the original video’s watch page; it is associated with the source rather than uploaded as a new Short. | When you want to share a short loop from an eligible video. A creator who owns the source can convert the entire viewer clip into a Short. |
| Studio Clips and Shorts | A creator draft for a new Short or video clip made from your existing upload, selected through transcript text or timestamps. | When you want to edit a segment and publish it as your own upload. |
The 5-to-60-second range applies to viewer-facing Clips, not to a general recommendation for Short length. See YouTube Help on Clips for that feature.

YouTube Create
YouTube for Artists describes Create as a free phone app for editing Shorts and videos and uploading them to YouTube, with timeline adjustments and voiceover. It is a separate editing path, not a prerequisite for making a Studio clip. Details are on YouTube for Artists’ Create page.
